Abstract

The research objectives are to describe The Profile of Teaching Skill Readiness of Candidate Teachers through Micro Teaching Practice in UNRIKA Batam. In teaching skill readiness of candidate teachers here we can see from the result of strength and weaknesses of teaching learning activity in micro teaching practice. If the candidate teacher able to conduct an instructional procedure designed relate to the objective of teaching and material available.The result of this research can be used by all of parties, both internal and external stakeholder to improve teaching leaning readiness in micro teaching practice. The researcher gets the total of 154 data items which are categorized into two groups, namely strength (S) category which consists of 73 data items and weaknesses category which consist of 81 data items. Teaching are divided into two categorizations, they are ‘Strength’(S) and ‘Weaknesses’ (W). Key Words: Profile; Teaching; Readiness; and  Candidate Teacher

Abstract

Find out the form of  “move” in students classssroom interaction of UNRIKA during teaching practice program was the aim of this study. Conversation texts taken froms tudents’ classssroom interaction of UNRIKA during teaching practice program were  the data of this research. To analize the data, in this study , descriptive qualitative method was used. There were five classroom interactions selected as the data source. The data were taken by recording then transcripted. Rewriting, Identifing utterences, elaborating and then analized were the process of data analysi. The findings of this study showed that were 261 clauses analysis. There were two types of move” in students classssroom interaction found, namely congruent and metaphorical “move” coding. Congruent and metaphorical “move” coding was 76.63% and metaphorical “move” coding was 27.37%. Congruent “move” coding was built in “knower” and “actor” analysis, but “knower” analysis was more dominant. It means the conversation texts dominnated by the statement and question, in another word, the content of the interaction refered to the lecturing and discussion situation.  Keywords: “Move”,” Knower”, “Actor” Congruent and Metaphor Coding.

Abstract

This study aims at identifying the students’ needs in learning English speaking to promote speaking syllabus development. This research was a qualitative descriptive research. The subjects were 63 students of the first, third and fifth semester of English Education Study Program of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Riau Kepulauan University. The data were collected using a questionnaire. The questioner is aimed at gathering information related to the target needs, and wants. The results found that the students target of studying English speaking are for their future profession and for their higher education. They want practicing the English speaking when they are studying, and they want enjoying a lot of speaking activities at the classroom together with their pair or group. They also want the speaking course exist as the English education study curriculum. The students assumed for the role of teacher as a facilitator and guide in the teaching learning activities. Keywords : needs analysis, speaking syllabus development

Abstract

This thesis discusses the novel by American author Stephanie Meyer entitled New Moon. This novel published by Little Brown and Company on September 2006 and this novel consists of 563 pages. This novel tells about the rarely love between human, vampire and ware wolf in Forks. This thesis focused on the Personality of Jacob Blacks influence his people around him especially his lover by his imprint as seen in New Moon Novel ByStephenie Meyer through Psychological approach. Meanwhile, too see Jacob’s character by personality theory as the main character of the novel, two question are formulated to guide or lead the analysis. Therefore there are two purposes of this research. First, to find out the characteristics of Jacob Black described in New moon novel by Stephanie Meyer. Finally, to know and explain Jacob’s personality by psychology approach.The method applied in this study is Qualitative research. The approach used in this study is psychology approach. The sources of data that are needed to support this study are taken from the novel new moon. Then the source contains the theories of literature, personality and another in terms of books and internet. Based on the result of the analysis, the answer to both questions is as follows. Firstly, Jacob Black’s characteristics are smart, brave, loving and friendly. Finally, Jacob’s characters influence his personality to save his lover and family and treaty from their enemy. Key Words:  Character ,Personality

Abstract

The objectives of the research are to: (1)find out types of corrective feedback used by the lecturers in Speaking activity at the second semester of English Department Students of Universitas Riau Kepulauan Batam in the academic years of 2013/2014; and (2) find out student’s response towards the lecturer’s feedback.The research was carried out at Universitas Riau Kepulauan Batam, from March 2014 to May 2014.The subject of the research is the second semester of English Department Unrika. The researcher did observation to take the data of corrective feedback used in class and used closed questionnaire, observation, and interview to find out student’s response towards the lecturer’s feedback.Then, the data was analyzed by using triangulation. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found that the lecturer used five types of corrective feedback. Recast was the feedbackmostly used by lecturer. It was followed by repetition, metalinguistic feedback, elicitation, and explicit correction. The student’s response toward feedback given by the lecturer were mostly negative. Most of the students were not comfortable with themselves when given feedback by the lecturers. Abstract

The objective of the research was to answer the research question which was to analyze grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion of comparative paragraph produced by third semester students of English Department Universitas Riau Kepulauan. The research was conducted in three months starting from observing the sample to making report. This research was held on third semester students of English Department Universitas Riau Kepulauan in academic year 2016/2017. The research method used was qualitative study. The subject of the research was third semester of English Department Universitas Riau Kepulauan. There were several techniques to collect the data that was used in conducting a research, namely observation, questionnaire, interview, and test. In this research, the researcher conducted a writing test to get the data. In analyzing data, they were identified and classified in the appropriate headings on the cohesion analysis sheet. Then, it is classified into sentences for Grammatical and Lexical Cohesion analyzing process and interpreting each student’s writing task. Keywords : cohesion analysis, grammatical-lexical cohesion, writing, comparative paragraph

Abstract

This study aimed at describing the whole speaking activities in teaching learning English for Senior High Schools in Batam based on teachers’ experiences by giving an open questionnaire and then categorizing the data collected using continuous comparison technique. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with naturalistic approach. The research setting is in Batam. The key instrument of this research is the researcher herself. The data are gathered through distributing questionnaire. The data are in the form of words, phrases and sentences. The data gathered were selected based on the type of the activity, named the categories and broke the data into some categories which then would be shown in tables. The result of the research shows that speaking activities for senior high schools in Batam can be divided into six types in general then broke down into 19 categories. Speaking activity in monolog was the most frequently used by teachers and dominated the activity. It occurred 36 times in teaching and learning process.Keywords: profile, speaking, teachers’ experiences

Abstract

 The objectives of this study are; (1) to formulate patterns of coding used in conversation texts of the English Zone textbook, 2) to investigate how coding are structured in conversation texts of the English Zone textbook, and 3) to reason why the coding techniques are used in conversation texts of the English Zone textbook. The data were taken from conversation texts of students’ English textbook: English Zone for senior high school students year grade XI (SMA). Descriptive qualitative method was used in this study. There were six conversation texts as the data source was taken from students’ English textbook: English Zone. The findings of this study shown that there are two types of patterns of coding in conversation texts, namely congruent and metaphorical coding. Congruent coding patterns are built in complete mood and residue (at least using mood) and metaphorical coding patterns are built in elliptical mood pattern. Mood and residue pattern is caused by the system of the conversation is using Proposition system. It means the conversation texts involve the statement and question, in another word, the content of the conversation dominantly are about giving and demanding information.  It was found that conversation texts convey the simple structure of conversation which means to attract the readers or students to understand easier by using complete mood and residue and elliptical mood pattern of conversation text is in less number. Abstract

The objectives of this study were (1) to describe the effect of rules of three on persuasive public speaking presentation in speaking class and (2) to identify kinds of rules of three used by students in speaking class. The method of the study was descriptive study. Population of the study was all fourth semester students of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education in English Department in UNRIKA Kepulauan Riau Batam in Academic Year 2015/2016. The sample of this study was 24 students of fourth semester of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education in English Department in UNRIKA Kepulauan Riau Batam in Academic Year 2015/2016. The data was collected by using CD-RW form of presentation submitted by students. The data was analyzed and described by using Speech Evaluation Form which consisted of delivery of the speech and structure of the speech. It was identifiedthat only one group used rules of three in their group’s persuasive public speaking presentation and it made their speech more focus and understandable while other three groups ignored the rules of three in their persuasive public speaking presentation and it led to the message of the speech went nowhere as the audience caught many aspects inside it too broad. If rules of three used in persuasive public speaking, then it will bring them to success and possible for any of them who wants to be the next top-paid public speaker if they know how to use that technique during their speech ratherin the future.  Keywords: rules of three, persuasive,  public speaking presentation

Abstract

Teachers of second language, should be aware of who their students really are. It means that teachers must comprehend diversities among their students in term of many kinds of personality traits and their links with second language skills. This study is aimed to find out the correlation between students’ risk taking behavior and their listening comprehension at fourth semester students of English Department Universitas Riau Kepulauan in the academic year of 2015/2016. The study is done with quantitative procedure by using students’ risk taking and listening comprehension’s score to obtain the correlation between both of the variables. The finding of the research is that rcalculated(-0.065) is lower than rtable(0.456). It means that null hypothesis is accepted and alternative hypothesis is rejected. The finding of the study concluded that there is no correlation between students’ risk taking and students’ listening comprehension. Teachers can use this result as starting point to find the correlation between those variables and other variables in order to help the students in achieving better result in second language learning.Keywords: correlation study, risk taking and listening comprehension
