Abstract

Metal casting process can be described as the process of making object by melting metal then poured into the desired mould. The mould that is commonly used is sand moulding. Binder which commonly used in sand casting process is bentonite. Bentonite is kind of mineral which can be run out if it is used continuously. The background of this study was to analyse the other binder that could reduce the use of bentonite by utilizing eggshell. This study aimed to analyse the hardness, microstructure, macrostructure, and fluidity of the cast which yielded by using variations of eggshell. The method that used was experimental method with a model of one-shot case study with descriptive analysis. The study result showed that the highest value of fluidity test was found at variation of 7% eggshell and 3% bentonite with hardness value of 180.86 HV. There were found several defects, casting result with variation of 4% eggshell and 3% bentonite found that there were ± 28 pinhole defects and ± 20 open grain defects. There were found ± 65 pinhole defects and ± 30 open grain structure defects in the casting result with variation 7% eggshell and 3% bentonite. The casting result with variation 10% eggshell and 3% bentonite had ± 50 pinhole defects and ± 30 open grain structure defects.

Abstract

Massive reduction of onion in Kabupaten Probolinggo was caused by Spodoptera exigua attacks. Since 2012, the significant reduction of onion production was up to 19%. One of the farmers group facing the reduction is Sumber Makmur III with total of reduction is up to 61.69%. The culture technique has done by farmers using conventional lamp and net which have many weaknesses from its implementation. Based on this problem, innovative technology MOAT (Moth Attractor Technology) has created as portable moth attractor. It is the innovative solution using lamp, box and glue completed by RTC (Real Time Clock) and having special glue to intensify the effectiveness and efficiency in exterminating the moths. Following methods have done are (1) literature study and observation, (2) designing product, (3) production, (4) device trials, (5) product’s socialization and implementation, and also (6) monitoring and evaluation. The result is MOAT which can effectively attract up to 770 months in a week. It can help the farmers reduce the damage of onion and increase the production up to 11.07 quintal in 180 m2 area. Furthermore, it can also increase the income of onion farmers.

Abstract

The increasing motor vehicle in Indonesia causes air pollution. Several gases that arise as pollutants are carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx). This study aimed to determine the effect of catalyst bed design variation on catalytic converter on exhaust emissions of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons in gasoline engine. The method used in this study was to compare the level of exhaust emissions with and without application of bed catalyst variation by putting hole on all of bed catalyst part, putting hole on the middle and side of bed catalyst part, and putting hole on the top and bottom part of bed catalyst part. The results showed that the lowest level of CO was on sample without catalyst, with value of 1.6%vol at 1500 RPM. While the result with variation hole on bed catalyst showed that the CO level on of full hole was 3.01%vol at 1500 RPM, hole on the middle and side was 3.19%vol at 1500 RPM, and hole on the top and bottom was 1.93%vol at 1500 RPM. Meanwhile, the lowest decreasing of HC level was found on the sample without catalyst, with the value of 155 ppm at 8000 RPM. Whereas the result with variation hole on the bed catalyst showed that the HC level on full hole variation was 543 ppm at 7500 RPM, hole on the middle and side was 459 ppm at 6500 RPM, and hole on the top and bottom was 509 ppm at 7500 RPM.
