Abstract

The aim of this research was to determine the effect of taurine supplementation on the totalcount of leucocyte cells and erythrocyte cells of mice that have been induced to benzo (α)pyrene in vivo. The parameters of this experiment were the total count of leucocyte cells anderythrocyte cells of mice (Mus musculus L.). This experiment was conducted in a completerandomized design by using six treatments, each in five replications. The mice were dividedinto six groups. Group I used as control were not given any treatment. Group II were given0,2 mL of oleum olevarum (olive oil) orally to the end of the experiment. Group III wereinduced to benzo (α) pyrene without being given any taurine. Group IV were given 7,8mg/bw of taurine before being induced to benzo (α) pyrene. Group V were given 7,8 mg/bwof taurine after being induced to benzo (α) pyrene. Group VI were given 15,6 mg/bw oftaurine after being induced to benzo (α) pyrene. Mice of group III, V, and VI were injectedwith 0,5 mL of benzo (α) pyrene solution every day for 10 days on their subcutant tissue forthe purpose of a nodule being formed in this area. It was then continued by giving taurineorally for 15 days. In the final treatment, mice blood was taken to count the leucocyte cellsand erythrocyte cells. The data were analyzed using ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) thencontinued by calculating least significant difference at 5 per cent level of significance. Theresults indicated that taurine had the ability to reduce leucocyte cells into its normalquantity, and was able to increase the number of erythrocyte cells of mice suffered fromleukaemia back to normal.Key words: benzo (α) pyrene, leukaemia, leucocyte, mice , taurine

Abstract

The aim of this experiment was to determine the effect of the addition of ash and sand-compost proportion in the media on the growth of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.). Theexperiment was conducted on December 2015 to January 2016 in the Botanical Laboratory,Biology Department, Faculty of Mathematic and Natural Science, Lampung University, andwas conducted in a complete randomized design by using two treatments. The first treatmentwas the addition of ash in two equivalents (with and without ash), the second treatment wasthe addition of sand-compost proportion in four equivalents (2 kg of sand, 1¾ kg of sand +¼ kg of compost, 1½ kg of sand + ½ kg of compost, 1¼ kg of sand + ¾ kg of compost). Theobserved variables of the growth were the number of the roots, the crown’s length, the wetweight, and the dry weight. The number of the roots was determined by observing thenumber of the roots present at the base of the stalk of each plants. The length of the crown(cm) was determined by measuring it from the stalk’s base to the edge of the longest leaf. The wet weight (g) was determined by measuring the whole part of the plant using ananalytical balance. The dry weight (g) was measured after the plants were stored in an ovenfor three hours in the temperature of 70o-80oC. The result showed that the best growth wasobtained from the media with the sand equivalent of 1¼ kg of sand added with ¾ kg ofcompost without ash.Key words: Ash, compost, growth of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.), sand

Abstract

Rice is a staple food that is very dominant for Indonesia. Production of rice in 2014 asmany as 70,85 million tons of milled rice, 0,61% lower than production in 2013. Oneway to increase production is the use of high yielding varieties. Polinela have toassemble ten new rice lines Pandan wangi species which have superior appearance. The research goal is to test the potential yield and quality of rice ten new rice strains. The study was conducted in Polinela for 6 months. The study was conducted usingRandomized Completely Block Design ( RCBD ).The treatment consisted of ten strainsof rice, is repeated three times. The variables measured were (1) dry milled grainyield per hectare; (2) the levels of amylose and amylopectin. Qualitative variablesmeasured were the texture and the smell of ricewith organoleptic method. Quantitativedata were analyzed by analysis of variance, if there is a difference between thetreatment continued with Test Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) on the real levelof 0.05. Heritability of quantitative variables were observed calculated to estimatewhether the variable-variable controlled bygenetic factors or environment? The resultsshowed the new rice lines Polinela assemblies have a range of potential outcomes ofmilled rice ( GKG ) between 6.47 to 9.79 tonnes/ha,amylose content is low tomoderate, very fluffier texture until fluffier rice. Keywords: yield potential, new rice strains
