Abstract

ABSTRCT This research is entitled Verba Pull dalam novel PS I love You Karya Cecilia Ahern dan Terjemahannya:Kajian Sintaksis dan Semantis. This novel has been translated by Monica Dwi Chresnayani into Indonesianwith the same title. Syntactically, the aims of the research are to find out what elements that follow that followthe verb „Pull‟ and whether there is syntactic shift in the target language. While semantically, it is to find outthe verb „pull‟ translation and whether there is semantics shift from the source language into the targetlanguage. The method which is used in this research is descriptive-comparative method. The writer describes,compares, and analyzes the source language and the target language data, and then draws a conclusion fromthe analyses. Syntactically, the result of this research shows that the verb „pull‟ can be followed by somedifferent elements such as pull + object, pull + Preposition, pull+adverbial particle. Then, semantically, it isfound some meaning shift in the translation like the expansion meaning and enhancing meaning. In thetranslation, the writer also find some words that are not translated word by word but make a wordcombination, the verb „pull‟ + adverbial particles its called phrasal verbs.Key words: verb, novel, translation, syntactic, semantic

Abstract

Abstract Examining and studying semantics error is a challenging area, due to the position of English as the foreign language in Indonesia. The skill of Indonesian in using English might be as not as good as Singaporean, Malaysian, or Filipinos. Indonesian try to use some English words in their daily conversation or certain occasion. However, they tend to ignore the meanings, as the result the words used are semantically incorrect. Insufficient knowledge of English semantic system causes Indonesian just accept the English words they got from media especially from their favourite Indonesian celebrities, without thinking the meanings might be wrong. In order to figure out the problem, this research aims to examine the semantics errors used by Indonesian celebrities on social media, TV show, and online news, how they can be categorized into errors classifications based on Shormani and Al-Sobani’s (2012) theory that basically followed the error taxonomy from James (1998). This research also investigated the meanings because knowing the meanings of the words is also very helpful in avoiding the errors of using English. The semantic errors that classified in this study are formal misselection, formal misformation, lexical choice, collocation, and lexicogrammatical choice.  The researcher uses qualitative descriptive method in doing the research. There are two kinds of data used in this research, written and oral data from Indonesian celebrities’ social media, TV show, online news, including videos on YouTube.Key word: Semantics errors, classification, meanings, Indonesian celebrities ABSTRAKMeneliti dan mempelajari kesalahan pada makna, adalah hal yang menantang. Kemampuan orang Indonesia dalam menggunakan bahasa Inggris mungkin tidak sebaik orang Singapura, Malaysia, atau Filipina. Orang Indonesia mencoba menggunakan beberapa kata bahasa Inggris dalam percakapan sehari-hari atau dalam kegiatan tertentu. Walaupun demikian, mereka cenderung mengabaikan maknanya, sebagai dampaknya kata-kata yang digunakan tersebut tidak tepat secara semantik. Pengetahuan sistem semantik bahasa Inggris yang kurang menyebabkan orang Indonesia hanya menerima kata-kata bahasa Inggris yang mereka dapat dari media, khususnya dari selebritas Indonesia fovorit mereka, tanpa berfikir mungkin maknanya salah. Untuk memecahkan masalah ini, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti kesalahan semantik yang digunakan selebritas Indonesia dalam media sosial, acara TV, dan berita online, bagaimana kesalahan tersebut dikelompokkan dalam klasifikasi- klasifikasi kesalahan menurut teori Shormani dan Al-Sobani’s (2012) yang pada dasarnya mengikuti sistem taksonomi kesalahan teori James (1998). Penelitian ini juga menginvestigasi maknanya karena mengetahui makna kata juga sangat membantu untuk menghindari kesalahan dalam penggunaan bahasa Inggris. Kesalahan semantik yang diklasifikasikan dalam penelitian ini adalah salah pemilihan dalam bentuk formal, salah pembentukan dalam bentuk formal, pemilihan kata, dan pemilihan gramatikal kata. Peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dalam penelitian ini. Terdapat dua jenis data yang digunakan, data tertulis dan lisan dari media sosial selebritas, acara TV, berita online, termasuk video di YouTube. Abstract

The development of science and technology affects the language field. The main influence of this development is the appearance of a lot of new vocabulary related to science and technology matter. It can’t be ignored that English is widely spread and used in describing things for example in social media, electronic stuff, e-commerce, aviation, the science and technology field, etc. As the result, some English vocabulary has been borrowed to explain things that there is no suitable or provided word in Indonesian. Borrowing words can cause the problems such as spelling and pronouncing whether in Indonesian or English. Some English words have been taken to the Indonesian dictionary by following EYD. However, people may tend to know the English version of borrowing words rather than the Indonesian (EYD) especially the IT people. But, they might don’t know that there is a possibility of a shift in the meaning. To figure out this problem, this research aims to know (1) the English borrowing words and their meanings in some Indonesian informatics engineering articles (2) the types of English borrowing words used in some Indonesian informatics engineering articles. The researcher uses a qualitative descriptive method in doing the research. From the result, it’s found that 20% and 35% loanword from 1st and 2nd journal, loan blend 80% and 65%. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui (1) eror secara gramatikal dalam penggunaan Bahasa Inggris lisan yang dilakukan mahasiswa semester dua di kelas Berbicara (2) eror yang paling dominan yang ditemukan di dalam kegiatan kelas Berbicara. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada mahasiswa semester dua Program Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Universitas Indraprasta PGRI. Peneliti menggunakan penelitian kualitatif dengan mengumpulkan data dari 43 mahasiswa dalam kegiatan kelas Berbicara dan penelitian kuantitatif sederhana untuk mencari tipe eror yang dominan dan presentasenya. Datanya mengenai penggunaan Bahasa Inggris dalam kegiatan berbicara/lisan dengan mengklasifikasikan tipe eror dalam empat bagian; penghilangan, penambahan, salah dalam penginformasian, dan yang terakhir salah pengurutan. Kemudian presentase untuk semua tipe eror seperti penghilangan 12.41%, penambahan 13.14%, salah penginformasian 23.36%, dan yang terakhir salah pengurutan 4.38%. Eror yang paling dominan adalah salah penginformasian dengan presentase 23.36%. Singkatnya, hasil dari penelitian ini dapat digunakan sebagai dasar informasi dalam mempelajari kemampuan berbicara mahasiswa dengan mengetahui kelemahan mereka.Kata Kunci: kemampuan berbicara, eror gramatikal, pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris

Abstract

This research aims to know (1) whether mind mapping activity can enhance students’ vocabulary (2) how is the classroom situation while mind mapping activity is implemented for the second semester students of English Education Program. The researcher uses classroom action research with two cycles and each cycle has four meetings. There are four steps in conducting this research; planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. In collecting data, there are two kinds of data used in this research, quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data is analysed by using descriptive statistics method in the form of students’ score of pre-test, post-test 1, and 2, and t-test of non-independent is used to see the significant difference of students’ improvement. While for the qualitative data they are collected from: observation, interview, and questioner by using triangulation method. The result of the research shows that there is improvement of students’ vocabulary in three vocabulary indicators: form, meaning, and word in use. The average scores in pre-test is 67.27, 72.47 for post-test 1, and 74.88 post-test 2. Furthermore, the improvement of classroom situation can be seen clearly from students’ participation, interest, high-performance, and high-engagement. Briefly, it is recommended for educators to use mind mapping activity to improve students’ vocabulary.  Key words: mind mapping activity, vocabulary, English learning

Abstract

Acquisition of a second language means a human process of acquiring the ability to generate, capture, and use words unconsciously to communicate. This study aims to find out what vocabulary three-year-old children receive from their habit of watching YouTube videos and their parents' habits at home. This study uses a qualitative method with descriptive explanations. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation and interviews. The results of this study found that subjects of second language skills in English were evident from their understanding of the questions and videos that they had watched repeatedly and the formation of their parents' habits. Mastery of a second language was also seen in the subject's ability to name food, fruits, and animals and to name simple verbs and verb phrases in English. The study results showed that the issue acquired 46 English vocabulary

Abstract

Kesalahan adalah hal yang umum dalam belajar bahasa asing. Bagi pembelajar bahasa, tata bahasa dapat memberikan banyak tekanan dalam proses pembelajaran. Kalimat atau pernyataan yang tidak gramatikal menyebabkan pembicara mengalami kesulitan dalam menyampaikan pesan dalam berkomunikasi. Untuk mencari tahu masalah yang ada, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui (1) kesalahan tata bahasa yang ditemukan pada tugas online pembelajar EFL, (2) kesalahan tata bahasa yang paling dominan ditemukan pada tugas online pembelajar EFL. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data diambil dari tugas siswa melalui grup WhatsApp dan Google Classroom. Bentuk data yang 2diambil adalah bentuk lisan dan tulisan. Dari hasil akhir dapat disimpulkan bahwa omission merupakan kesalahan yang paling dominan ditemukan pada tugas online siswa dengan 9 kesalahan dan persentasenya adalah 45%. Urutan kedua kesalahan dari segi jumlah adalah addition dengan 6 kesalahan dan 30%, selanjutnya misordering atau salah susun dengan 4 kesalahan dengan 20% dan terakhir adalah kesalahan formasi atau misformation dengan 1 kesalahan dan 5%. Diharapkan dari penelitian ini dapat memberikan manfaat bagi pembelajar bahasa untuk mengetahui kesalahan yang sering dilakukan selama proses pembelajaran bahasa asing terutama kesalahan tata bahasa.Kata kunci: analisis kesalahan, kesalahan tata bahasa, tugas online
