Abstract

This paper tries to describe the Marxist Feminist values that are embedded within themovie Suffragette. Suffragette is a movie created by Sara Gayron and was premiered bythe French cinema Pathé. Suffragette was inspired by a true story of the movement fromthe Radical Feminist group Suffragette led by Emmeline Pankhurst, in fighting for thewomen’s rights for political participation. Suffragette tells the story using the perspectiveof the main character Maud Watts, a laundry service worker who joined Pankhurst inraising the issue of sexual harassment and women’s rights to vote in front of theParliament; which mainly consists of upper class Caucasian men. This paper exhibits theinequality between the upper class and the domination of masculinity towards thelabors/female labors. This research adapt on Sara Mills’ Discourse Analysismethodology in order to provide description of the Marxist Feminist values which wasadopted within the character of Maud Watt, as the research subject, and the act ofresistance by Suffragettes as the object; in addition, placing the movie viewers as thereader and Sara Gavron as the writer. The values of Marxist Feminism were visiblethrough the scene which the character Maud Watts gave her testimony before the courtand within the Darby Horse Race scene which the group Suffragette performed theirprotest. The court scene showed the resistance from the female labor group, whichrepresents the rejection against the hegemonic masculinity values that’s projected by theupper class Caucasian men in parliament. In the final scene, the Darby, which wasconsidered as an activity for the elites and demonstrates masculine and competitivevalues, was chosen as a channel to demonstrate the labor class women’s resistance.Keywords : Representation, Marxist Feminism, Suffragette, Feminist Methodology, Movie.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the cross-cultural communication barriers of Papuan students in Surabaya. Qualitative approach to the cluster analysis method. Six respondents were successfully recruited by purposive sampling technique. The theory used is the theory of reducing the level of uncertainty by Charles Berger et al. And Theory of cross-cultural communication barriers by William Gudykust. This study shows the results that Papuan students experience many obstacles while living in Surabaya. Language, physical, perception and culture are key barriers to information interaction and adaptation. The barriers that occur have an impact on the social life of key informants where social disparities occur on personal key informants. However, these obstacles are reduced over time because they use three strategies to reduce obstacles, namely passive, active, and interactive strategies.Keywords: communication obstacles, cross-cultural, cultural aspects.

Abstract

This paper tried to give an in-depth critical view on the Kecap ABC Real Husband Cooks Campaign. The campaign tried to tackle the issues within Hill Asean Reports on Gender Inequality in the Domestic Sphere by encouraging men’s participation in the kitchen. The campaign, though were highly praised to be considered as progressive and pro-equality, also send message of pseudo-empowerment within their Neoliberal Feminist message regarding women’s position in the domestic sphere. This paper founds three issues in related to the topic: first is how this campaign fails to eliminate the stereotype of women as weak and dependent towards men although they tried to present women and men as independent. Second, the campaign over simplify gender inequality and went with the neoliberal feminist understanding on individualization of understanding and defining an issue. Last, by putting men in the kitchen will give a message that men are willing and committed to participate in a pro-equality movement but in reality, it is not more than just a pseudo-empowerment created from adding domestic work as a skill. Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the teaching and learning process from traditional to digital. This abrupt change caused a high level of stress among the students.  One way to decrease student’s stress level is to seek entertainment or actively doing their preferred hobbies. Downloading an entertaining application into their gadgets is one of the things they do. Clubhouse is an audio-chat application created in 2020 but gain popularity in 2021. This research aims to dig student’s adaptation process in using the Clubhouse application as a part of the Communication Process. This research used Qualitative Descriptive Method together with Innovation Diffusion Theory Approach. Data Collecting was done to six university students of Department of Communication Science major in FISIP 17 Agustus 1945 Surabaya University who uses Clubhouse. The result showed that the informants adaptation progress began from knowing the application through social media, looking for information and directly using, understanding the positives and negatives till deciding to accept or reject the application. Among the informants, two refused while four accepted the application although two informants confirms that they will no longer use Clubhouse until there are significant new features and upgrades.Keywords: Clubhouse Application, Innovation Diffusion, University Students

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe approach of engagement pyramid, which is a response to the increasingly complex relations between consumers and producers in the digital era, offers a solution so that the sustainability of an organization, product or a particular brand can be maintained, through one key concept: engagement. Applying the approach of the engagement pyramid in online journalism enables the creation of a healthy journalistic process, because the demands of high speed verification and curation procedure of the news or other journalistic products can still be fulfilled through the stages of engagement. The stages of engagement include watching, sharing, commenting, producing and curating. This article is a summary of research on the application of engagement pyramid in the news media portal http://suarasurabaya.net. With the case study method, Suara Surabaya dot Net was chosen as a subject based on meeting criteria as convergent media. As a result, the pyramid engagement approach has implications for the continuity of good relations between the media and listeners, which also have consequences on the structure of the writings as the product of online journalism, considering that media platform used (radio, portal, social media and micro blogging) each has specific characteristics.Keywords: Engagement Pyramid, Healthy Journalistic, Online Convergence, Suarasurabaya.net.ABSTRAKPendekatan engagement pyramid yang merupakan respon terhadap semakin kompleksnya relasi antara produsen di era digital dan konsumen, menawarkan jalan tengah agar keberlanjutan sebuah organisasi, produk maupun brand dapat terjaga, melalui satu konsep kunci yaitu keterlibatan. Pendekatan piramida keterlibatan dalam jurnalisme daring memungkinkan terciptanya proses jurnalistik yang sehat, karena meskipun dalam tuntutan kecepatan yang tinggi, verifikasi dan kurasi berita atau produk jurnalistik lainnya tetap tetap bisa dilakukan melalui tahap-tahap keterlibatan. Tahap-tahap keterlibatan tersebut meliputi watching, sharing, commenting, producing dan currating. Artikel ini merupakan ringkasan dari penelitian tentang penerapan engagement pyramid di media portal berita http://suarasurabaya.net. Dengan metode studi kasus, Suara Surabaya dot Net dipilih sebagai subjek berdasarkan pemenuhan kriteria sebagai media konvergen. Hasilnya, pendekatan engagement pyramid selain berimplikasi pada keberlanjutan hubungan baik antara media dengan pendengar juga berkonsekuensi pada struktur penulisan produk jurnalistik, mengingat masing-masing platform media yang digunakan (radio, portal, media sosial dan micro blogging) memiliki karakteristik yang spesifik.Kata Kunci: Engagement Pyramid, Jurnalistik Sehat, Konvergensi Daring, Suarasurabaya.net.
