Abstract

This study tries to explain the role of faith-based organizations in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Indonesia by showing the role of Wahana Visi Indonesia in education. Claiming themselves as Christian Faith-Based Organization that works according to the Christian Faith (Iman Kristen), WVI has huge impact on the sustainable development in Indonesia, including the education. By focusing this study to the case of Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI), author aims to explain profoundly the effect religious actor has in development, particularly child education in Alor – East Nusa Tenggara. This study uses qualitative methods and literature study as an approach, in which authors did one-on-one interview as data collection technique, and examine through critical analysis to develop initial understanding in specified areas: religion and development and education. On the ground of major role of WVI as faith-based organization in the issue of SDGs, the author will discuss it accordingly in two main analysis as follows, the nexus of faith and development in Wahana Visi Indonesia in education field. Secondly, the author will examine the encounter and engagement that happened between religious actors (national and international), International Organizations, religious-affiliated schools and churches to understand how FBO operates in international development to achieve more effective and efficient in developing advocacy within religious-civil-society in Indonesia. Final result showed that religious is transformational, seen from the dynamic in three levels (macro-level, meso-level, micro-level) which outlined the progress of Wahana Visi Indonesia in intensifying child education in Alor – East Nusa Tenggara. The study concludes that Wahana Visi Indonesia as Faith-Based Organizations has successfully aligned ‘Christian Faith’ without the aim of proselytization in the realm of Child Education, as it works as catalyst of development for which it has influenced people-centered development regarding child education. It proves that WVI is catalyst to development, and study case of Alor – East Nusa Tenggara is an evidence how ‘faith’, ‘dialogue’ and ‘networks in religion-development domain’ has successfully made significant contribution in improving child education.

Abstract

Abstract

Various discourses about locality and indigenous peoples emerged as an effort to overcome the climate crisis. This term is also a part of seeing the sustainability of nature. This paper departs from arguments such as queer ecological studies and the indigenous paradigm. Furthermore, some of these academic studies are used to foster focus through indigenous knowledge in recalibrating the God-Human-Nature relationship through Bugis cosmology and the role of the Bissu. The main argument in this paper is to present Bugis knowledge and understand the embodied resistance in the existence of Bissu in South Sulawesi. This study used a qualitative method with participant observation and in-depth interviews. Data collection was carried out in two steps, namely, literature study, which was followed by participant observation and in-depth interviews. Data is then collected, classified, and interpreted through the indigenous paradigm as an effort to decolonize knowledge. The results of this study show some holistic, cyclic knowledge, and based on experience in the Bugis community, namely: (1) Environmental conservation can be guided by Sulapa Eppa as an environmental ethic based on Bugis cosmology; (2) Sangiang Serri as an eco-prophetic ritual that denounced heteropatriarchy; (3) Embodied resistance of Bissu’s gender identity ambivalence as a political representation of queer ecology.

Abstract

Bhinneka Tunggal Ika is one of the pillars of Indonesia that has placed our nation and nationess to a diversity of identity, from genders, tribes, religions, to cultures. Indonesia has a long history of gender diversity that recognized various gender identities as part of the culture. Henceforth, In Indonesia, gender is not perceived in a binary way between male or female, masculine and feminine, without giving the ‘third space’ to other genders and sexuality. For example, Bugis people recognize five genders: oroané, makkunrai, calabai, calalai, and bissu, which will be examined further in this paper. In reality, a lively debate emerges about “gender pluralism” that is considered not part of Indonesian culture. The rising number of persecution to the minority, including transgender people, has placed them to the most vulnerable groups because of their gender identity. This paper aims to deconstruct the understanding of gender identities in Indonesia through cross-cultural, socio-religious, and postcolonial approaches to develop the cultural history of gender pluralism in Indonesia. To examine further the decolonization of gender identities in Indonesia, the author identifies the process between ‘desire’ and ‘demand’ in terms of ‘The Colonizers’ and ‘The Colonized’ to see how the ‘dominant discourse represents reality about gender identities. By re-imagining ‘binary opposition’ in the ‘on-going’ process of movement happens in intercultural space, the author revives the ‘intersectional space’ of gender identities in Indonesia, as Edward Soja described ‘Third Space’. Research result showed that Bissu’s existence heretofore left ‘the conceived’ and ‘the Lived’ in the Bugis community; thus, it drifted the limited space given to the Bissu in ‘the perceived’. Consequently, it restricted the development of Bissu’s hybrid identity. Henceforth, the revival of malempu and malebbi were required as an intervention about giving back the power of agency within ‘sign games’ to the Bissu.
