Abstract

Dalam rangka penyelenggaraan program pelatihan bahasa asing untuk komunikasi bisnis, dilakukan survei pendahuluan terkait kendala berkomunikasi yang dihadapi oleh staf Indonesia penutur bahasa Jepang. Penelitian ini berusaha untuk mengidentifikasi jenis kesulitan, situasi-situasi yang sering menimbulkan kesulitan berkomunikasi, serta penyebab terjadinya permasalahan komunikasi menurut para tenaga profesional penutur bahasa Jepang yang bekerja di perusahaan Jepang. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode campuran (mix method) antara penelitian kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Penelitian diawali dengan pengumpulan data menggunakan angket. Simpulan sementara yang diperoleh dari hasil analisis angket kemudian akan diuji kembali melalui wawancara mendalam (in-depth interview) pada beberapa responden yang terpilih. Hasil wawancara dan data dari angket kemudian dianalisis kembali untuk mendapatkan simpulan akhir dari penelitian. Berdasarkan analisis, disimpulkan bahwa staf Indonesia penutur bahasa Jepang terutama mengalami permasalah berkomunikasi menggunakan bahasa Jepang saat harus melakukan komunikasi secara spontan tanpa adanya persiapan. Kendala tersebut banyak terjadi pada saat diskusi, rapat, juga komunikasi melalui telpon. Terdapat faktor internal dan faktor eksternal yang menyebabkan terjadinya kendala berkomuniasi dengan penutur jati bahasa Jepang. Faktor internal meliputi faktor penguasaan bahasa dan faktor perbedaan budaya, sedangkan faktor eksternal terjadi karena perbedaan budaya kerja di Indonesia dan di Jepang.

Abstract

(Title: The Effect of Anime and Manga Consumption on Japanese Language and Culture Learning) This research was conducted to look at how far anime and manga effect Japanese language learning among the students of the Japanese Program in the Vocational College of Universitas Gadjah Mada. The data were collected via a question form. The question form was distributed to 2nd year and 3rd year Japanese students in May 2017. The questions in the questionnaire include the Japanese language learning motivation, the level of interest in Japanese anime and manga, frequency of consuming anime/manga, as well as the effect on the Japanese language learning by consuming the products. From the data obtained, things can be concluded as follows: 1) most of the students stated that the first time they knew Japanese was through anime/manga; 2) watching anime can support students’ Japanese learning, especially for vocabulary enrichment, listening exercises, and understanding the context of the use of Japanese words or expressions; and 3) most of the students experienced a change of perceptions about Japanese language and culture after learning Japanese in the university. However, the language used in the anime contains stereotypical elements (known as role language or yakuwarigo) and therefore yakuwarigo and sociological context in Japanese should be introduced to the students.

Abstract

The number of Japanese learners in Indonesia ranks the second largest in the world after China. In addition to great interest in Japanese popular culture products, such as anime and manga, the enthusiasm of Japanese learners to study in Japan has become one of the main motivations for learning the Japanese language. The changing in educational policy implemented by the Japanese government has also offered a new possibility for study in Japan. This study aims to explain how the motivation to study in Japan was cultivated through the process of Japanese language learning in higher educational institutions in Indonesia. Researchers collected data using a set of a questionnaire distributed to Japanese language learners at designated universities and interviews with some of the respondents. This study focused on three issues: factors that motivate students to choose Japanese language study programs in university, language skills that learners want to develop in university, and their interest in studying in Japan. The result showed that interest in the Japanese language was the primary motivation for many learners to continue their study in higher educational institutions. The ability to communicate with native Japanese speakers was a significant achievement for a Japanese learner, but at the same time, it was a difficult task to achieve. Study in Japan provided an opportunity for learners to improve their Japanese language skills and to gain experience in Japan. These things were expected to increase the value of learners’ cultural capital and access to previously unobtainable resources.

Abstract

Jepang adalah salah satu destinasi wisata yang menarik wisatawan Muslim dari Indonesia,Malaysia, dan negara-negara lain di Timur Tengah. Akhir-akhir ini, tingginya jumlah wisatawan Muslimmembuat Jepang menjadi sangat gencar mengembangkan fasilitas ramah Muslim untuk meningkatkanjumlah kunjungan wisatawan asing. Jepang adalah negara non-Muslim dengan penduduk mayoritasberagama Budha dan Shinto sehingga pemahaman masyarakatnya terhadap konsep halal dan wisatahalal tentunya sangat terbatas. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini dilakukan untuk melihat apakah fasilitasramah Muslim yang mereka kembangkan sebagai bentuk omotenashi telah sesuai dengan standar wisatahalal yang diharapkan oleh wisatawan Muslim. Penelitian ini difokuskan pada karakteristik pelayananberbasis omotenashi, kebutuhan pengembangan wisata halal di Jepang, serta perkembangan fasilitasramah Muslim di Jepang. Data penelitian ini diambil dari jurnal dan website yang relevan dengan temapenelitian. Setelah dianalisis, dapat disimpulkan bahwa dibandingkan tahun-tahun sebelumnya, jumlahfasilitas ramah Muslim semakin meningkat. Dari enam kebutuhan (faith-based needs) wisatawan Muslim,empat di antaranya telah terpenuhi, yakni kebutuhan akan makanan halal, tempat ibadah, kamar kecildengan air, serta pelayanan rekreasional dengan privasi. Namun, masih terdapat beberapa masalah yangperlu diperhatikan oleh Jepang, yaitu 1) masih terdapat aktifitas non-halal di banyak restoran, 2) belumada pelayanan makan sahur bagi wisatawan yang berpuasa khususnya di bulan Ramadan, 3) terbatasnyajumlah restoran halal di kota kecil,4) belum terdapat badan sertifikasi halal yang ditunjuk secara resmioleh pemerintah Jepang, dan 5) terbatasnya jumlah musala yang m enyediakan fasilitas wudu.

Abstract

One of the efforts to improve the quality of human resources is by building links and matches between educational institutions and industry.  This link and match will support the growth of skilled human resources who can contribute optimally in various fields. In this regard, the question that often arises is whether universities, as institutions that play a role in educating young people, have produced graduates who have competencies that are in line with the needs of the industries. This research was conducted to identify hard skills and soft skill s typically required by the industries related to Japan and needed to be mastered by the graduates of Japanese Language/Literature Study Program who are working as Japanese speaking professional. Besides, this research aimed to analyze the weaknesses and problems faced by Japanese speaking professional when carrying out their work. The research data were collected from Japanese speaking professionals and the representative from Japanese companies located in Indonesia using questionnaires and interviews. Data obtained were then analyzed by referring to several references, including the results of the research conducted by M.M. Robles (2012) related to hard skills and soft skill s. The study finding about the strengths and weaknesses of Japanese Language Study Program graduates in Indonesia, can lead to improvement of the Japanese language learning, especially Japanese language learning in universities in Indonesia. So that the results of the study are expected to be taken into consideration in preparing and developing the curriculum of Japanese Language Studies Program in Universities, not only in the Vocational School of UGM, but also in other institutions in Indonesia.

Abstract

Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the largest-scale Japanese-Language test for non-native speakers in the world. This measurement tool is used by many companies and universities to assess the Japanese language skills of a job/scholarship applicant. The minimum standard expected by a company or university is the JLPT N3 level. Therefore, the majority of educational institutions in Indonesia that organize Japanese language programs set the learning outcome of its graduates to be equivalent to JLPT level N3. However, many students fail to pass the JLPT N3 exam before they graduate from college. In this study, a survey was conducted through a questionnaire to find out students' perceptions of the difficulties they encountered while taking the JLPT N3 exam. This study was conducted at the Japanese Study Program of the Vocational College of Uninversitas Gadjah Mada. Based on the results of the study, 88% of respondents found difficulty in answering Reading (Dokkai) and 62% of respondents found difficulty in answering Grammar (Bunpo) questions. Only 41% of respondents found difficulty in answering Vocabulary (Moji-goi) questions. Meanwhile, 59% of respondents found that the easiest exam questions were Listening (Choukai) questions. Generally, there are several factors that cause the difficulties. According to the students, the factor causing the difficulties in all types of questions (Reading, Grammar, Vocabulary and Listening) is the low mastery in vocabulary.

Abstract

The research measured the digital technology literacy skills of professional Japanese language translators and interpreters. A modified version of the digital literacy skills checklist constructed by Open University was employed in the research. The questionnaire consisted of four sections, i.e., understanding general digital practices, finding, using, and creating information related to Japanese translation and interpreting, and the use of translation and interpreting technology. The result shows that respondents have confidence in their digital literacy skills to find, use, or create information online. However, most of them are still unfamiliar with the application of Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) and Computer Assisted Interpreting (CAI) tools to assist the translation or interpreting jobs. The result indicates that many Japanese businesses and industries do not require translators and interpreters to use specific CAT or CAI tools. However, the rapid development of digital technology and the market trend toward the use of technology are inevitable. Basic knowledge of these tools is necessary because they offer many advantages for translators and interpreters to work effectively. Therefore, it is highly important to incorporate the basic knowledge of CAT and CAI tools and other digital technology resources into the curriculum for students translators and interpreters.

Abstract

Background: The theme of friendship in anime is often why an anime fan makes an anime title his/ her favorite. One Piece by Eiichiro Oda is an anime themed on the friendship of pirate crews. It aired on Indonesia’s private television station in the 2000s. In One Piece, the word “Nakama” is assumed to represent the sincere bonds of friendship offered by the character Luffy. But there’s also an assumption about the hidden meaning of making someone into their nakama. Not the one celebrated by the fans, but a reciprocal deed of a human being who needs another person’s help to reach their ambition. The assumption is up because One Piece fan who was touched by this character’s charisma also called themselves “Nakama.” Purpose: Find out the dominant, negotiation, and opposition regarding the scene of “Nakama” explanation by the character Nami in anime episode 102. Methods: This research used a qualitative method with a reception analysis approach by Stuart Hall. An in-depth interview was conducted with four informants who had been fans of One Piece since childhood and studied Japanese language and culture. Results: This research revealed that “nakama” has a biased meaning and does not only refer to “sincere friendship .”The informant’s answers were also influenced by their knowledge of Japanese culture learned in college and their everyday socializing experiences. Two informants are in the dominant hegemony position, and the rest are in a negotiation position because they have not found someone like “nakama” in the One Piece anime. Implications: Provide information about how the audience learning the Japanese language and culture view the meaning of “nakama” in their favorite anime and their view about friendship in real life.

Abstract

This study investigates how Japanese language students view group poster presentations as a project-based integrated language learning process. Japanese language students in higher education must possess both the hard and soft skills necessary for the workplace in the twenty-first century. Therefore, developing Japanese language learning methods is necessary to enhance both learners' soft skills and Japanese proficiency. The project-based learning (PjBL) approach was carried out through a project assigned in the Speaking course, namely in group poster presentations. This research investigated students' perceptions after implementing poster presentation activities to develop their soft skills. The research data were collected using questionnaires, interviews with selected students, and observations during the 8-week project. The results of this study show that the Japanese language students respond favourably to the implementation of the group poster presentation project. Poster presentation activities encourage the students to practice their four Japanese language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in realistic communication. At the same time, these group project activities help the students understand the value of interpersonal skills, project management, critical thinking and problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills in completing a project.
