Abstract

The current article intends to discuss interculturality as the real condition where members of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) carry out their mission ad extra as well as live out their lives ad intra in their religious communities. The tern interculturality is not really new for most of the members, since the rationale of the foundation of the Society in 1875 was exactly for cross-cultural mission, which means internationality or interculturality. The last General Chapter of the Society (2012) has just rediscovered interculturality as its heritage and mission commitment since the time of Saint Arnold Janssen, its founder. At the same time, interculturality was (and is) regarded as a particular gift of God to the Society. The article tries to put forward that it is very important for all the members to be competent in their intercultural life and mission. Training in intercultural competence, then, is a must in all levels of religious-missionary formation.

Abstract

Lay people have always been protagonists in the life of the Church since the time of the apostles. They have also always been missionaries at the borders by the grace and call of Baptism and Confirmation. The arena of their missionary work is vast and complex which covers politics, economics, industry, education, the media, science, technology, the arts and sport, etc. In so-doing they have a great opportunity to encounter all kinds of people of every rank and way of life. It is, therefore, the responsibility of the Hierarchy to empower them with all kinds of religious means and to facilitate the fulfillment of their religious needs. The article also argues that lay Christians are partners of clergy and religious in missio ad gentes.

Abstract

Mission evangelization is at the heart of the Church, since ‘the pilgrim Church is missionary by her very nature’ (AG 2; LG 1). It logically means that mission cannot be treated as a function among other tasks God has entrusted to his people, the Church. This article tries to present a general analysis on the concept of mission evangelization based on the biblical grand narrative and doctrine of the Church since Vatican II. Mission of the Church, which characterises the Church as missional community, originates from God’s mission (missio Dei) – mission of the Most Holy Trinity: God the Father sent the Son, and God the Father and the Son sent the Spirit. It would describe that mission essentially has a Trinitarian foundation as well as a Christological, Soteriological, and Pneumatological foundation. Since the Church is the seed, sign and instrument of God’s kingdom, surely mission also has an ecclesiological foundation. From the biblical grand narrative, mission derives four theological themes: creation, fall, redemption, and eschatological restoration. From these four plot movements, focusing on God’s mission, the Church is called and sent to participate actively. Mission of the Church, therefore, is basically a ‘participation in and representation of’ the mission of God.

Abstract

This article argues that the Second Vatican Council has recognised the missionary nature of the entire Church (AG, 2). Carrying out the mission means that the Church (clergy as well as lay people) is enthusiatically responding signs of the times in close collaboration with peoples of good will. Time and again, following the decree of Ad Gentes, the Catholic Church expresses its missionary identity in renewed ways in its mission documents. The present article starts with Ad Gentes (The Church’s missionary activity, 1965) and goes through Evangelii Nuntiandi (Evangelization in the modern world, 1975), Redemptoris Missio (The permanent validity of the Church’s missionary mandate, 1990), and Evangelii Gaudium (The proclamation of the gospel in today’s world, 2013). The Church has been moving out from the position of ‘maintenance’ to ‘mission’, as Pope Francis formulates in this words: “The word of God constantly shows us how God challenges those who believe in him ‘to go forth’” (EG, 20). Accordingly every Christian is expected to ‘go forth’ due to his/her baptism, because the Church itself is ‘a community of missionary disciples’ (EG, 24.40.120).

Abstract

The article tries to paraphrase the apostolic message of Pope Francis on the occasion of the World Mission Sunday 2016 entitled “Missionary Church, Witness of Mercy” by highlighting some key points which are particularly important for fostering and keepingalive the missionary impulse of the Church. As sanctorum communio, the Church is by all means also called to ‘go out’ to the world, to share the joy of the Gospel and God’s tenderness and compassion, particularly where injustices, wars, and humanitarian crises prevail. The Pontiff reminds that this hard work needsa lot of patience and effort with maternal services or with that of the merciful vine-dresser of the Gospel. In so-doing the missionary Church is witnessing God’s mercy
