Abstract

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the effect of using the inductive teaching method on passive voice instruction. This research was designed in form of quasi-experimental research. The population of this research comprised the whole classes of eleventh grade students and two classes were chosen as sample for the study. Measurement technique was employed to find out if inductive teaching is effective or not for passive voice instruction. A set of multiple choice test was administered to experimental and control groups. This study revealed certain positive results. Firstly, the inductive teaching method is effective for teaching senior high school students, especially for teaching grammar. Secondly, Inductive Teaching method can help the students to acquire a better comprehension concerning the concept of passive voice, because Inductive teaching method assist the students to improve their ability to reason. In conclusion, inductive teaching method is a good option to be implemented in passive voice instruction, and grammar teaching in broader context. In addition, the researcher would like to suggest fellow teachers to implement inductive teaching method for grammar instruction since this method is suitable for today?s language teaching demands and focus on communicative aspect. Abstract

  Abstract: The purpose of this research was to find out the effectiveness of the use of Word Mapping technique in teaching vocabulary. To achieve the objectives of the research, a pre experimental research was conducted at SMP Negeri 14 Pontianak with the subject of the research was the eighth grade students in class VIIIA in academic year 2015/2016 which was chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The findings of the research obviously showed that there was a significant difference of the students’ achievement before and after Word Mapping technique was applied, and that the use of the technique had a highly significant effect on the students’ vocabulary mastery shown by the students’ improved scores on the posttest. To sum up, the present research findings proved that the use of Word Mapping technique is highly effective in teaching vocabulary to the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 14 Pontianak academic year 2015/2016.   Keywords: Word     Mapping   Technique,   Vocabulary   Mastery,   Vocabulary Teaching   Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektivitas penggunaan teknik Word Mapping pada pengajaran kosa kata. Untuk mencapai tujuan penelitian, sebuah penelitian pre-experimental telah dilakukan di SMP Negeri 14 Pontianak dengan subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas VIII A pada tahun ajaran 2015/2016 yang telah dipilih menggunakan teknik cluster random sampling. Hasil penelitian dengan jelas menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan terhadap prestasi siswa sebelum dan sesudah teknik Word Mapping diterapkan, dan penggunaan teknik teresebut mempunyai efek yang signifikan terhadap penguasaan kosa kata siswa yang ditunjukkan dari peningkatan skor posttest siswa.  Dapat disimpulkan bahwa, penggunaan teknik Word Mapping efektif terhadap pengajaran kosa kata pada siswa kelas VIII A di SMP Negeri 14 Pontianak tahun ajaran 2015/2016.   Kata kunci: Teknik Word Mapping, Penguasaan Kosa Kata, Pengajaran Kosa Kata

Abstract

AbstractThe present research was an attempt to know the improvement of teaching by using picture series on students’ process in writing procedure text in Year-7 of “SMP Negeri 3 Sungai Raya” in the Academic Year of 2017/2018. The method used in this research is Classroom Action Research. This research was done in three cycles. The participants of this research were the seventh-grade English teacher and 32 students in class VII A. The researcher found that the picture series improved students’ process in writing procedure text. Then the ideas were also clearly stated and the sentences were organized well. The students also began to show their interests by actively answered the questions and enthusiasm during the class activity until the end. The result of this study showed that the picture series did not only improve students’ process in writing procedure text but also motivated the students to write in groups and individual.Keywords: Procedure Text, Picture Series

Abstract

AbstractThis research was to develop model of students’ workbook for junior high school based on Dayak’s local wisdom. The research participants were 24 students of second grade of SMPN 4 Air Besar. Designed through the implementation of ADDIE (Branch and Gagne 2009), the collected data revealed that the students were more interested in learning English. They looked happy to use the products. In the contextual analysis result and its validation, the materials development experts also recomend strongly that these products are more relevant to the needs of rural area students especially the dayak ones. With some feedbacks from the implementation, it was found that the students were much more active and creative in the learning process. Thus, this product is deserved to use as an alternative material for English subject at junior high school of rural areas.Keywords: local wisdom, modelof student’s workbook,  materia         development,rural area

Abstract

Abstract This present study was administered to develop supplementary reading comprehension materials for the tenth grade students of Automotive Mechanical skills Program. The writer applied Research and Development study (R&D). The participants of the research were tenth grade students of Automotive Mechanical Skills Program of SMK Negeri 2 Pontianak in academic year 2015/2016 and also the English teacher who taught the class. The data of the present study were collected by interview, questionnaire, observation table checklist and validation table checklist. This study found that the problem in the existing reading material was irrelevancy of the materials with the program of the students. Furthermore, about 74,1% students stated that they need reading materials related to their program. Therefore reading comprehension materials needed to be developed. From the finding, there were eight requirements needed to be met. They were suited to syllabus, related to the automotive mechanical skills program, contained  vocabularies related to program, contained interesting materials, contained enjoyable activities, could be coped by the teacher and students, related to the students’ prior knowledge and must be contextual. As the result, the reading materials developed by the writer had met all the requirements. Abstract

AbstractThe objective of the research is to enhancing student?s writing skill on descriptive text through authentic material to the Grade Eighth Students of SMP Negeri 3 Samalantan. Moreover, this research to solve the student?s problem in learning writing descriptive text.  This research is a classroom action research using Kemmis and Taggrat procedure ; planning of action, implanting of action, observing and evaluation analysis and reflection. Triangulation approach administered as the technique of data analysis. The participants were students at the junior high school grade VIII of SMP N 3 Samalantan in academic year 2015/2016. The classroom action research conducted in three cycles, each cycle consists of two meeting. The result of the classroom action research obtained that the authentic material enhanced student?s ability in writing descriptive text. Authentic materials do not only increase the student?s achievement on writing descriptive text but also bring a joy full learning atmosphere. Abstract

AbstractThis research was conducted to find out whether or not the use of clustering technique is effective in teaching writing recount text and if it is effective how effective is the use of clustering technique in teaching writing recount text. In doing this research, the researcher used pre experimental study in one group pretest and posttest design. This research was conducted to the eighth grade students of SMP Islam Bawari Pontianak in Academic Year 2015/2016. The researcher used cluster sampling and the sample of this research was class VIII A. The research found that the technique was effective to enhance students’ recount text writing due to the t-test calculation result which was 10.55. The technique was significantly effective to enhance students’ recount text writing as the result of effect size analysis categorized as high. It was concluded that the technique was able to be used in enhancing students’ recount text writing and the effect was positive. The researcher recommends an English teacher at that school to use this technique as a variation in the teaching process, especially in teaching writing recount text.          Keywords: clustering technique, writing, recount text

Abstract

AbstractThe research was aimed at discovering the effect of vocabulary journal on students? vocabulary achievement on the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Teluk Keramat in academic year 2016/2017. This research was pre-experimental research with one group pre-test post-test design. The population of this research was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Teluk Keramat in academic year 2016/2017 with the total number of students were 131 students and the sample of the research was class VIII B which consisted of 33 students. The measurement technique was employed to collect the data. Based on the result of the hypothesis testing as well as analysis of the effect size, the use of vocabulary journal has a strong effect in teaching vocabulary on descriptive text in SMP Negeri 2 Teluk Keramat. Vocabulary journal enabled the students to learn vocabulary actively, made the students more aware of learning vocabulary, and it can be used to review the material. It was indicated by the improvement of the students? vocabulary achievement after getting three times treatments by the implementation of vocabulary journal. Referring to research finding, the researcher recommends this technique to be implemented, especially in teaching vocabulary. Keywords: Vocabulary Journal, Teaching Vocabulary, Vocabulary Achievement.

Abstract

Abstract: This quasi experimental-based research evidently concentrated on the effectiveness of semantic mapping strategy in comparison to direct translation technique to enhance students’ English vocabulary and speaking achievements on descriptive texts. Students’ perception was additionally studied. The instruments were tests and questionnaires. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to analyse quantitative data obtained through the tests and an analytic scoring rubric was developed to support speaking performance assessment. The outcomes disclose that there is a significant dissimilarity observed through the individual total scores and F ratios obtained by the two groups. Semantic mapping affected the experimental students’ English vocabulary achievement powerfully and their English speaking achievement moderately. Moreover, their positive perception appeared. These indications, contrarily, did not apply to the control group treated with direct translation technique. To conclude, this strategy is superior to direct translation technique.   Keywords: Semantic Mapping Strategy, English Vocabulary Achievement, English Speaking Achievement   Abstrak: Penelitian quasi-eksperimental ini berfokus pada efektivitas strategi peta semantik sebagai perbandingan dari teknik terjemahan langsung dalam meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata dan kemampuan berbicara yang berhubungan dengan teks deskriptif. Persepsi siswa juga menjadi bahan penelitian. Instrumen yang digunakan meliputi tes dan kuesioner. Analisis variansi satu arah diterapkan untuk menganalisis data kuantitatif yang diperoleh melalui tes dan sebuah rubrik penilaian analitis dikembangkan untuk mendukung penilaian performa berbicara. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan adanya perbedaan signifikan berdasarkan nilai individu secara keseluruhan dan rasio F yang diperoleh kedua kelompok. Strategi peta semantik membawa pengaruh kuat terhadap penguasaan kosakata dan pengaruh sedang terhadap kemampuan berbicara. Lebih lanjut, persepsi positif siswa muncul. Indikasi-indikasi ini sebaliknya tidak ditemukan pada kelompok kontrol yang belajar dengan menggunakan teknik terjemahan langsung. Alhasil, strategi peta semantik lebih unggul daripada teknik terjemahan langsung.   Kata Kunci: Strategi Peta Semantik, Penguasaan Kosakata bahasa Inggris, Kemampuan Berbicara bahasa Inggris

Abstract

AbstractThis study aimed at determining the utilization of multimedia in learning English for the learners. The use of multimedia should be able to fulfill the needs of the learners and can make the learners easy to understand the material being studied. This research used descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection techniques used were observation, interview, and documentation. The results of this research were (1) narrative text learning design using multimedia in SMP Negeri 14 Pontianak done by the teacher through preparing some of required aspects such as curriculum analysis, learning need analysis, method, appropriate evaluation and strategy for the learners, as well as the using of media, (2) the implementation of English learning using multimedia could be done well. It could be seen from the active learners in learning activities, (3) The learners’ attitude in achieving the acquisition of learning narrative text by utilizing multimedia based on observations was that learners became more interested and felt happy in learning activities, learners became more active and enthusiastic, and also the learners more excited doing the evaluation test by using multimedia. It can be concluded that the utilization of multimedia in learning English for the acquisition of learning narrative text class VIII students SMP Negeri 14 Pontianak ran well because it can make the learners interested as well as increased the learners' motivation so the learners became enthusiastic in the learning process.Keywords: The utilization of multimedia, learning english, acquisition of learning.
