Abstract

Ulee Lheue Beach is one of the marine tourism sites in Banda Aceh. Its appearance, apart from attracting visitors to enjoy the beauty of the shore, also has consequences for piles of garbage thrown carelessly by the visitors to the shoreline which has an impact on environmental damage. In addition, the visitors tend to heed the government’s appeal to strictly commit to health protocols such as social distancing, gathering prohibition, and wearing masks while they visit the tourism spots. Therefore, this community outreach sought to map the knowledge of the tourists about waste and its impact on tourism sites and its relation to the dangers of Covid-19. This service employed mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative). The survey results showed that the visitors have fairly good knowledge regarding the dangers of waste and Covid-19 yet still uninternalized in their daily attitudes. Thus, the service team provides education through leaflets and videos on Youtube channels, hoping that the visitors would have higher commitment towards the environmental hygiene and health protocols at tourist sites.

Abstract

Abstract

Development of drug delivery systems (DDS) has been widely carried out using safe biopolymers – starch and κ-carrageenan. However, for optimal use, the foregoing polymers still suffers from mechanical weakness. Combining both polymers could enhance the properties of each of the polymer. This research aimed of improving the applicability of starch and κ-carrageenan as DDS by means of polyelectrolyte complexation to form a polymer film. The composition ratio of starch:κ-carrageenan was optimized using response surface method (RSM) on Design Expert 11.0 based on water swelling, tensile strength, and disintegration time of the film. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry was performed on the prepared starch—κ-carrageenan film and suggested the successful film preparation. The bulk characteristics of the film are dependent on the starch or κ-carrageenan composition ratio, where starch has been associated with higher thickness, while κ-carrageenan — rigidity. From the RSM, the optimized composition was revealed to be 2.95 and 2.84 g for starch and κ-carrageenan, respectively, in a 60 mL aqueous solvent. The predicted optimum properties of the film were 160.21%, 3.26 MPa, and 17.47 min for swelling degree, tensile strength, and disintegration time, respectively. Taken altogether, the characteristics of starch or κ-carrageenan individually could be modified by polymeric combination, where they could be optimized by means of RSM.

Abstract

The utilization of natural compounds as therapeutic agents to treat pancreatic cancer has recently focused on natural drug research. Calotropis gigantea has long been believed to be a medicinal plant that helps in treating various diseases. The bioactive compounds 9-metoxipinoresinol and isoliquiritigenin isolated from C. gigantea leaves are proven to act as therapeutic agents by inhibiting the cancer cell growth of Panc-1 cells. This study aimed to screen the potential molecular inhibition mechanisms of 9-metoxipinoresinol and isoliquiritigenin against pancreatic cancer development in-silico. We analyzed the activity of the aforementioned two compounds as inhibitors of several proteins that play a role in the growth of pancreatic cancer cells, such as GCNT3, GOT1, c-Met, PPARγ, BUB1, and NF-κβ, through molecular docking investigation. Our data suggested that 9-metoxipinoresinol and isoliquiritigenin were able to have well interaction with the target proteins, in which the predicted affinity energy ranged between -6.8 and 8.7 kcal/mol. The docking scores of 9-metoxipinoresinol and isoliquiritigenin were higher than the standard drug used (gemcitabine). Based on the binding affinity energy, GCNT3 and BUB1 are potentially to be used as target molecules for cancer therapy using 9-metoxipinoresinol and isoliquiritigenin, respectively.
