Abstract

This study investigated speaking anxiety factors that lead EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students feel anxious in Speaking in Formal Context class. The participants of this research were 29 students of class B1, 2nd  semester, English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara , even semester, academic year 2022-2023. This research was conducted with descriptive qualitative approach by administering questionnaires to students which consisted of five closed-ended questions. The questions were taken from FLSAS questionnaires. Observation was also applied to this study. Lecturer observed the progress of students’ speaking performances from the second meeting until the last regular meeting. The findings revealed that students’ speaking anxiety factors in English speaking class mainly dominated by the lack abilities in vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, worried of being laughed at by peers which resulted to the anxiety, inconfidence and fear in speaking. These findings suggest that the lecturer’s role is also significant to encourage

Abstract

Salah satu alasan keterbatasan guru-guru TK atau PAUD dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris adalah karena bahasa Inggris belum menjadi mata pelajaran wajib untuk anak usia dini. Bahasa Inggris merupakan mata pelajaran wajib hanya di level SMP sederajat dan SMA sederajat. Di level TK atau PAUD, bahasa Inggris hanya digunakan untuk keterampilan berbicara dasar seperti basic greetings (sapaan dasar), menyanyikan lagu bahasa Inggris sederhana atau menyebutkan kosa kata dasar (basic vocabulary) tertentu seperti alfabet, anggota keluarga, nama hewan, atau menyebutkan warna dalam bahasa Inggris. Sementara itu, di era informasi, komunikasi dan teknologi (ICT era) ini, keterampilan berbicara bahasa Inggris semakin diperlukan. Dengan menguasai bahasa Inggris, guru-guru juga dapat berkomunikasi dengan orang asing, bisa membaca dan memahami buku-buku bahasa Inggris, memahami konten-konten pendidikan berbahasa Inggris di sosial media, dan sebagainya. Tujuan dari pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah untuk melatih kemampuan berbicara guru-guru TK Islam Al-Ikhlas Taqwa terutama dalam pengucapan basic greetings (sapaan dasar) yang sering digunakan guru-guru ketika menyapa anak-anak didik mereka. Diharapkan dengan pelatihan ini, guru-guru termotivasi untuk lebih percaya diri berkomunikasi dalam bahasa Inggris dan membiasakan murid-muridnya dengan bahasa Inggris sejak usia dini untuk menjawab tantangan zaman di era globalisasi ini.

Abstract

Technology is advancing rapidly in this globalization era. Modern technology such as Artificial Technology (AI) emerges as the result of digitalization and it has a favourable impact on many facets of life including in education sector. Generation Z or Gen Z, as digital natives, utilize digital technology including AI as an essential part of their daily routines. The purpose of this study is to investigate Gen Z students’ perspectives towards the use of technology particularly AI (artificial intelligence) technology in English language learning. The participants of this study were 30 students from English Education Department, class of TBI-3, fourth semester of State Islamic University of North Sumatera (UIN SU). Qualitative method was implemented in this study. To collect the data, two instruments were employed, through an interview technique and observation. The research findings revealed that 18 (60%) students agree with AI technology, 10 (33.3%) students were neutral and 2 (6.7%) students disagree with the utilization of AI technology in English language learning. AI technology seems to be more advanced in the future to assist human. Moreover, if it is integrated officially in education sector. Thus, Gen Z students should be wiser in accessing it. This study may broaden teachers’ and lecturers’ insight or horizon about current technology in English language learning.
