Abstract

Oil palm fronds are waste products of oil palm plantations that are not utilized, yet oil palm fronds can be converted to biochar to improve soil fertility. This study aimed to analyze the chemical properties of the biochar generated from oil palm fronds. A pot experiment was conducted in Negeri Lama Seberang Village, Labuhanbatu District, Rantauprapat. The biochar formulation consisted of two formulations, i.e., A = pure biochar  (biochar in its original form) and B = granule biochar (biochar + tapioca flour). Each biochar form was repeated five times to obtain ten samples. The results of biochar laboratory analysis were continued with statistical tests based on the dependent t-test at the 5% level using Microsoft Excel. The results showed that biochar granules had chemical characteristics such as organic C of 32.78%, N of 2.39%, P of  0.18, K of 0.75%, and pH of 8.07. These values showed that granule biochar has better chemical characteristics than pure biochar.

Abstract

The utilization of ex-mining land for agricultural extensification is an opportunity to solve the problem of food and the environment. One way to improve the soil quality of ex-mining land is by providing organic matter from agriculture waste are biochar and cow manure formulation. The study aimed to determine the effect of the use of several organic matter formulations to improve the soil quality of Sawahlunto ex-mining coal land. This research was conducted at Agriculture Experiment Station, Andalas University, Padang. This research consisted of four formulations of organic matter (A = control, B = cow manure, C = Rice husk biochar, D = Rice husk biochar + Cow manure) with five replications. The treatment units were allocated based on Randomized Complete Design (RCD). The results showed that the application of rice husk biochar and cow manure can improve the soil quality of ex-mining coal land, especially pH value and CEC. Increasing of CEC and pH was support macronutrient availability such as, available P, N, K, Ca, Mg and Na. The addition of organic matter from cow manure plus rice husk biochar gave the best value to improving the chemical properties of ex-mining coal land. So, cow manure and biochar combination is the first recommendation to improve the chemical properties of ex-mining coal land to support sustainable agriculture. Keywords : biochar, cow manure, ex-mining coal, soil quality

Abstract

One source of organic material is vegetable waste. This research aims to identify differences in the chemical properties of compost extracts and their influence on improving the availability of garden soil nutrients. The research was carried out in Rantau Selatan, Labuhanbatu Regency, North Sumatra Province, with an astronomical location of 99O33' East Longitude - 100O22' East Longitude and 01O41' North Longitude - 02O44' North Longitude. The first stage of this research was to investigate differences in compost extract concentrations using the paired t-test statistical test at the 5% level. In the second stage, a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was used with 3 treatments and 18 replications and continued with the Least Significant Difference (LSL) further test at the 5% level. The research showed that the 1:5 compost extract had higher chemical characteristics such as pH 6.83%, C-Organic 22.5%, N 0.95%, P 0.37%, and K 8.8%. Providing 1:10 compost extract can increase the nutrients in the yard soil, giving the best results and showing nutrient availability such as pH 4.92%, C-Organic 4.11%, N-total 16.3%, P-bray 251.37%, K-dd 10.9%, and KTK 26.34%.
