Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate English learners’ metalinguistic awareness on detecting lexical ambiguity in a text. In ddition, it also investigated whether or not the participants’ interests in certain linguistics branches are influential in analyzing an article. This was a case study design aiming to inveestigate in depth and detailed data source collected from students’ assessment.The finding showed that most of the participants can retrieve their metalinguistic awareness and linguistic knowledge. Specifically, half of them could detect ambiguity because of the influence of their interest in semantics. Moreover, a few of those who were interested in semantics could analyze through both semantics and pragmatics view. In this way, it can be concluded that the participants’ interests in semantics was influential in detecting ambiguity as a domain of semantics. This research suggests that in studying linguistics, students should not only be taught about theories but also how to analyze either written or spoken discourse on the basis of those theories in linguistics branches.

Abstract

Abstrak: Menyikapi gerakan stay at home, work from home, dan learn from home sebagai dampak pandemic covid-19, guru dituntut untuk menyajikan pembelajaran daring yang sistematis. Masalah yang dihadapi adalah karena platform pembelajaran daring banyak menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Tujuan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah meningkatkan ketrampilan guru-guru SD dalam memanfaatkan Google Classroom untuk pembelajaran daring. Metode pelaksanaan pengabdian adalah Participatory Action Research (PAR) dimana peneliti melakukan analisa kebutuhan dengan interview kepala sekolah sebagai pemetaan awal dan membangun hubungan kemanusiaan. Monitoring dan evaluasi dilaksanakan untuk mengukur keberlanjutan implementasi google classroom oleh para guru. Hasil evaluasi pertama pada bulan ketiga menunjukkan bahwa 60% dari guru partisipan pelatihan yang mengimplementasikan google classroom, sedangkan pada evaluasi akhir sudah mencapai 80%. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa melalui berbagai macam kendala terkait susahnya jaringan, kemampuan orangtua siswa, dan kemampuan guru itu sendiri bisa teratasi dalam kurun waktu enam bulan. Dari pelaksanaan pengabdian dan penelitian ini didapatkan bahwa kemampuan dalam bidang informasi teknologi para guru meningkat secara signifikan karena selain mengaplikasikan google classroom, para guru juga aktif membuat konten video pembelajaran dan powerpoint interaktif sebagai materi pembelajaran.Abstract: Responding to the movement of stay at home, work from home, and learn from home during covid-19 pandemic, teachers are required to provide online learning systematically. The problem faced was related to the use of English in many online learning platforms. The purpose of this society-service was to improve the Elementary School teachers’ skills in utilizing google classroom for online learning. Participatory action Research was employed in this society-service-research in which the researcher conducted an analysis through interview with the school headmaster as a preliminary mapping and trust building. Monitoring and Evaluation were done to measure the sustainability of google classroom implementation by teachers. The result of the first evaluation within 3 months showed that 60% of teacher-participants have implemented the application, whereas at the second evaluation resulted 80%. This result showed that the problems related to internet connection, parents’ afford, and teacher’s low ICT skill could be solved within 6 months. It can be concluded that this community service and research could improve teachers’ skills on information technology significantly as it was not only about using google classroom, buat also enhancing their ability to create online learning contents in the forms of video and interactive powerpoint.

Abstract

Need analysis has become part of ADDIE model in developing materials for language learning. This research aims at examining the importance of need analysis as the initial focal step prior to the development of materials for Speaking for Academic Purpose. It is also investigating the reliability of ADDIE model prior to developing teaching material, specifically the ‘analyze’ stage. This research is typically a qualitative descriptive approach which conducted by using survey method. The instruments are students questionnaires and experts questionnaires created in online google form. There are totally 68 higher education students consist of thirty-three (33) seventh semester students and thirty-five (35) of fifth semester students taking the role as the respondents. The experts questionnaires are distributed to six lecturers who have the same interest in materials development and teach English for academic Purposes. The most result showed that 40 and 21 respondents consider ‘very important’ and ‘important’ which shows that 90% of all respondents has similar opinion on the importance of textbook for the course of Speaking for Academic Purpose availability. All of the expert-respondents consider that it is important to develop materials for the course of Speaking for Academic purpose, shown by the dominant answers of ‘yes’Thus, by implementing ADDIE model, the researchers are convinced to develop materials for Speaking for Academic Purpose for students of English Education Study Program in Nusa Nipa University.
