Abstract

Exercise is non-pharmacological management for Diabetes Mellitus (DM) type-2. Previous study found that both eerobic and interval training improved insulin resistance. The aim of this study was to analyze the chronic effect various type of exercises to fasting blood glucose (FBG) and insulin resistance in DM type-2 model rats. It was an experimental study, twenty male Wistar rats, age 8 weeks, weight 150-180 gram as the object. Rats were given high fed diet for 4 weeks then injected streptozocin dose 30 mg/kgBB in citrate buffer pH 4.5 i.p, and 45 mg/kgBB at the following week. Groups were divided into i.e moderate continous training (MCT), severe continous training (SCT), slow interval training (SIT), and fast interval training (FIT). All groups were treated with ran on the treadmill three times a week for 8 weeks. Fasting blood glucose and fasting insulin were checked before and after intervention. Insulin resistance was determined by calculating HOMA-IR. Data analized with paired t-test (p<0,05). The results shown that all group significantly decreased fasting blood glucose and insulin resistance (p <0,05) after eight weeks exercise except insulin resistance in MCT group. Fasting blood glucose and insulin resistence post-test was found lowest in SIT groups in this study. In conclucions chronic effect of aerobic continous and aerobic interval in various intensity can decrease fasting blood glucose and insulin resistance in DM type-2 rat model. Slow interval training was the best exercise model to decrease insulin resistance.

Abstract

Background: Physical activity is a contraction of the skeletal muscles which results in a core increase in caloric requirements compared to resting energy expenditure. Globally, around 23% of adults aged >18 years were not active enough in 2010. In Indonesia, low physical activity among people aged >10 years has increased, from 2013 to 26, 1% increased to 33.5% in 2018. Low levels of physical activity affect cognitive function, such as working memory, learning motivation, and concentration in addition to causing problems in physical and psychological health. Working memory plays an important role in learning process and is influenced by physical activity, low working memory will make it difficult to receive new information and decrease learning achievement. Objective: Finding the relationship between physical activity and working memory in medical students at the Universitas Sumatera Utara.  Methods: This study used an analytical method using a cross-sectional design. The data will be analyzed with the Pearson or Spearman analysis test using a data processing program. Results: The mean physical activity was highest in the age of 22 years (3598.33 MET/week), class of 2018 (2389.83 MET-minutes/week), and male gender (3219.55 MET-minutes/week). While the mean working memory capacity was highest in the age of 22 years (43.67), class of 2017 (37.77), and male gender (38.1). The non-parametric correlation test had insignificant results (p=0.393), proving there was no relationship between physical activity and working memory in students. Conclusion: Physical activity doesn’t affect the working memory capacity of students at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara. Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Sleep is an essential need in daily lives with abundant functions, especially neuron restoring process in neocortex after various activities. Poor sleep quality is often found, resulting from the needs of work, education, lifestyle, and sociocultural demand. It could hinder cognitive function thus affecting daily life quality. Thus, the objective of this study is to assess the risk factors of poor sleep quality and its relation to cognitive function of college students at Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara. Method: This research uses an analytic method with cross-sectional design where the collection of data is simultaneously taken at one time. The data are primarily obtained from interviews utilising validated questionnaires, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) for sleep quality and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) for cognitive function, with stratified random sampling technique. Results: The incidence of poor sleep quality of the samples is 69% with the predominance of being male, aged 17-19, having higher body mass index, and consuming caffeinated beverages. Meanwhile, the incidence of mild cognitive impairment is 42%. The Chi-Square and Spearman Rank tests show a significant relation (p=0.009) and weak correlation (r=0.262, p=0.008) between age groups and sleep quality, whereas there is no association of gender (p=0.517) and body mass index (p=0.322) with sleep quality. The Fisher’s Exact test yields no relation between consumption of caffeine (p=0.778) and sleep quality. According to the Chi-Square test, sleep quality is not associated with cognitive function as well (p=0.993). Conclusion. There is no association of sleep quality with cognitive function, however there is a significant relation and weak correlation between age groups and sleep quality.
