Abstract

Abstract: This article seeks to answer the question, “Where is God in the midst of suffering?”, through reflecting on the paradigm of discipleship in Mark 9:36-37. Welcoming a child is a parabolic action done by Christ to show that the way to be the greatest is to welcome the weakest or to be the servant of all. A child is used as a paradigm due to his or her low status in the Greco-Roman society. Children had no right, seen as properties rather than persons, and thus equated to slaves. Therefore, welcoming a child means welcoming the weakest of the society, and doing so means to welcome Christ himself and the one who sent him. The suffering caused by COVID-19 makes the whole world suffer, yet it also creates a bigger gap between the rich and the poor, the strong and the weak. A reflection on the paradigm invites Christians to side with the weakest and those who are in need, hoping that the kingdom of God will be ushered into this suffering world. Abstrak: Artikel ini adalah upaya untuk menjawab pertanyaan, “Di manakah Allah di tengah penderitaan?” melalui perenungan terhadap suatu model pemuridan yang berdasarkan paradigma pemuridan di dalam Markus 9:36-37. Menyambut seorang anak kecil merupakan suatu tindakan perumpamaan yang dilakukan Kristus guna menunjukkan bahwa cara untuk menjadi yang terbesar adalah untuk menyambut mereka yang lemah atau untuk menjadi hamba bagi sesama. Seorang anak digunakan sebagai paradigma sehubungan dengan status sosialnya yang rendah di tengah masyarakat Greko-Romawi. Anak dianggap tidak memiliki hak, dilihat sebagai properti ketimbang pribadi, dan dengan demikian dapat disetarakan dengan budak. Maka menyambut seorang anak berarti menyambut mereka yang paling lemah di tengah masyarakat, dan melakukannya berarti menyambut Kristus sendiri dan Dia yang telah mengutus Kristus. Dampak global dari COVID-19 membuat kesenjangan sosial di antara yang kaya dan yang miskin dan yang kuat dan yang lemah menjadi semakin besar. Suatu perenungan terhadap paradigma pemuridan tersebut mengajak umat Kristen untuk berpihak kepada yang lemah dan mereka yang membutuhkan, dengan harapan bahwa melalui tindakan tersebut, kerajaan Allah akan disambut ke dalam dunia yang sedang menderita.

Abstract

Perhaps there is no better time to reflect on the new creation than now, amid the Covid-19 pandemic. All aspects of human life are being impacted by the pandemic, not to mention the danger of death that it generates. This critical situation brings out legitimate questions to the current state of the world (or creation): whether it is perishing, being abandoned by God, or whether God is punishing the world into destruction due to its abundance of sin. Attempting to answer those questions, the author will argue alongside Kuyper and Bavinck that God would never abandon nor destroy his creation. Even though corrupted by sin, God has no intention to destroy the creation; instead, he intends to restore it according to his original plan. God’s intention is not just to redeem the elect but to redeem the whole creation, and that complete redemption will find its fulfillment in the new creation. Such a reflection would encourage the Christian proclamation that God’s salvation extends to all creation.

Abstract

Spirituality is an under-developed topic on Abraham Kuyper, perhaps it is due to Kuyper’s strong emphasis on the public implications of Christian faith. But things are not supposed to remain that way, since Kuyper also has an equally strong emphasis on the importance of the private dimension of Christian faith. For more than 40 years, Kuyper had written a multivolume of meditations which amount to 2,200. In those meditations, his personality and spirituality are clearly reflected. This article argues that his meditations would be a suitable starting point to construct a Kuyperian spirituality alongside other Kuyperian themes such as his doctrine of regeneration (palingenesis) and his ecclesiology. The term “palingenesis” (from Greek word palingenesia) refers to both personal rebirth and the rebirth of all cosmos. This doctrine bridges the private and public implications of Christian faith, between spirituality and Christian actions in Kuyper’s theology. And while his distinction between the Church as institution and as organism is well-known, his emphasis on the role of the institutional Church as mother which nurtures the spirituality of the believers is lesser known. A deeper examination shows how his ecclesiology plays a central role in his spirituality.

Abstract

The concept of the Messiah is a complex and often problematic concept for both Christians and Jews to understand. Christian often accept the concept too simplistically to the point of losing sight of the continuity of the concept with the Messianic prophecies in the Old Testament. In contrast to the Christians, the Jwes reject the concept mainly because their Messianic concept is very strong. Related to glory and power but they do not understand theat the Messiah must die even to the point of being crucified to atone for the sins of His people. Using a biblical theology approach. This article argues that the concept of the Messiah in the Bible must be fully understood in terms of the glory and suffering of the Messiah in the Bible. Bear the sin. Two the important biblical concepts for understanding both are the concept of The Son of Man and the concept of the Suffering Servant. In the deen of Jesus Christ, the glory and power of the Son of Man and the role of the Suffering Servant were simultaneously fulfilled through His humiliation on the cross and His exaltation through His resurrection from the dead. For this purpose this article first discusses concerning the Messiah in the Old Testament, the second: the Messiah and the Son of Man, the third: Son of Man and the Suffering Servan, and then concludes with a conclusion.

Abstract

Transformation is the key to the growth of the church and mission. Transformation is a positive change toward Christ that marks believers’ life, as indicated by Paul’s exhortation in Romans 12:2. The church refers to the people who believe in Christ so they are renewed by the power of the Holy Spirit. That transformation or renewal empowers the church to function as the light of the world, as a missional community through the power of the Holy Spirit. This article seeks to present the strong correlation between the spiritual transformation of the church by the power of the Holy Spirit with her function as a missional community. This article elaborates the meaning of transformation in the New Testament, the meaning of transformation from the perspective of systematic theology, and the strong correlation between spiritual transformation and the function of the church as a missional community. Abstrak Transformasi adalah kunci dari pertumbuhan gereja dan misi. Hal tersebut merupakan perubahan positif yang menjadi ciri kehidupan orang percaya kearah Kristus, sebagaimana nasehat Paulus dalam Kitab Roma 12:2. Gereja adalah orang-orang yang percaya kepada Kristus sehingga dibaharui oleh kuasa Roh Kudus. Transformasi atau pembaharuan tersebut merupakan hal yang memampukan Gereja untuk berfungsi sebagai terang dunia, sebagai komunitas misional oleh kuasa Roh Kudus. Artikel ini melihat relasi yang erat antara transformasi Gereja oleh kuasa Roh Kudus dengan berfungsinya Gereja sebagai suatu komunitas misi. Artikel ini memaparkan makna transformasi spiritual di dalam Perjanjian Baru, makna transformasi spiritual dari perspektif teologi sistematika, dan relasi erat antara transformasi spiritual dengan fungsi Gereja sebagai suatu komunitas misi.
