Abstract

This research was aimed at investigating the effectiveness of Ice-BreakerActivity in improving students’ Speaking skill and the students’ perceptionstowards the use of Ice-Breaker activity in improving speaking skill of thethird semester students of English Department of FKIP UKI Toraja.A quasi experimental design was employed with one class of the thirdsemester students of English Department of FKIP UKI Toraja. Sampleswere selected by using cluster sampling method. The data were obtainedthrough oral test and a questionnaire. The Speaking assessment wascovering pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, fluency and self-confidence.The findings were analyzed statistically using independent t-testprocedure.The findings showed that the value of t-test in experimental class was higherthan the value of t-table(value of t 3.57 > value of t table 2.021).Furthermore, the students‘ perception towards Ice-Breaker Activity was95.2% students agreed that this technique could help them to increse theirSpeaking skill.The statistical computation showed that Ice-Breaker Activity was noteffective in improving the students’ Speaking skill but the students havepositive perception towards the use of Ice-Breaker Activity in improvingtheir speaking skill. Designing the learning purpose appropriately whichconsiders students’ needs and language level may ease lecturer to usethe the Ice-Breaker Activity in improving students’ Speaking skill. Thelecturer may try to take advantage of Ice-Breaker Activity to beutilized in their classroom activities to conduct an effective andinteresting learning atmosphere in the classroom.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out what factors cause the anxiety in speaking English by the Second Semester Students of English Department of FKIP UKI Toraja. In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative research with survey design. The researcher used interview as the way to get the data. The subject of this research was the Second Semester Students of English Department of FKIP UKI Toraja. The researcher used semi structure interview which consist of 10 questions. The data were analyzed by three steps, they are data reduction data display, and conclusion. The result of this research showed that mostly factors which caused the students anxiety in speaking English was difficult to adjust their accent with the British and American accents. And followed by less of self-confidence, and the other factors was listener understanding, pronunciation, and friends reaction. In this research, the researcher can concluded that British and American accent was the factor which mostly caused the students anxiety in speaking English by the second semester students of English Department of FKIP UKI Toraja.

Abstract

Kesetaraan jender sesungguhnya amanah dari setiap agama dan budaya. Namun tidak dapat dipungkiri bahwa kesetaraan jender dalam masyarakat masih sulit terwujud. Perempuan masih mengalami hambatan tersembunyi dalam masyarakat. Keberadaan tersebut dapat terlihat melalui metafora, dan simbol. Pada satu sisi metafora dan simbol dapat merefleksikan ketidaksetaraan tersebut, namun pada ada sisi lain dapat menjadi media pengungkapan nilai-nilai kesetaraan. Budaya Toraja memiliki metafora yang menyimbolkan atau mengartikan kesetaraan. Budaya Toraja memiliki beragam bentuk metafora dan simbol kesetaraan. Penelitian ini bertujuan menemukan nilai-nilai kesetaraan jender dalam simbol dan metafora budaya dan maknanya dalam kehidupan masyarakat Toraja. Rumah adat Toraja dan lumbung misalnya adalah salah satu simbol penting, karena merupakan metafora simbolik pusat kehidupan. Seluruh proses hidup dan ritus kehidupan dilaksanakan dalam sebuah tongkonan, di mana rumah adat dan lumbung dibangun. Penelitian ini menghasilkan temuan bahwa terdapat kesetaraan jender dalam budaya Toraja yang disimbolkan oleh rumah adat Toraja dan lumbung. Rumah adat Toraja adalah simbol perempuan, di mana setiap anak dilahirkan dan lumbung merupakan simbol kesejahteraan material yang tersimban dilumbung, yang diusahakan oleh laki-laki. Sebagai simbol kesetaraan keduanya selalu ada dalam setiap tongkonan, sekaligus mencerminkan fungsi tersebut dalam kehidupan masyarakat Toraja. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode qualitative descrptive. Peneliti menjadi key instrument dengan menggunakan teknik obervasi langsung dan open-ended interview. Pembahasan dan analisis dilakukan dengan memakai bantuan pendekatan analisis interpretatif terhadap simbol dan metafora tersebut.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether or not the paraphrasing improves speaking ability of the third semester students of English Department of FKIP UKI Toraja. This research used an experimental design that applied Experimental and control group. The population of this research was the third semester students of English Department of FKIP UKI Toraja, academic year 2012/2013. The number of this population was 320 students which consist of nine classes. Because the number of the population was big in number, so the writers took out 16 students as the sample of this research. The sample took randomly from all classes. The result of data analysis shows that paraphrasing improves speaking skill of the third semester students of English Department of FKIP UKI Toraja. This believe is based on the fact that the mean score of the experimental group was 6.2 and the control group was 5.7. It shows that the mean score of the experimental group is greater than the control group. The different between experimental and control group is 0.5. Based on the result of data analysis, the writers concludes that paraphrasing improves speaking skill of the third semester students of English Department of FKIP UKI Toraja academic year 2012/2013

Abstract

Nowadays, 4.0 Education 4.0 is a new paradigm in educational context in which it focuses on the innovation and maximizes the use of information, internet, and technology. Teacher has some essential roles in the classroom. One of those roles is teacher as a facilitator and communicator. Teachers facilitate the students in the classroom. They help them in conducting the teaching and learning process. Teachers talk to the students during the activities in the classroom. It is important to know whether the teacher applies the communication skills properly in the classroom or not; and the students’ perception about the teachers’ communication skills contribution on their speaking performance. This study applied qualitative method. The data were collected by observation, questionnaire, and interview. The researcher collected, analyzed and interpreted a variety of data to reveal the kinds of communication skills that were used by the lecturer in the class, and then found the students’ perception about the lecturer communication skills toward their oral communication performance. The data resources were the lecturers’ verbal and non-verbal communication applied in the classroom. The sources of the data based on the observation taken from one English lecturer in public university and one of English lecturer in private university. In addition, the interview taken from students of those lecturers. The non-verbal communication skills that were applied by the teachers. Each communication skill applied by the teacher had effect on students’ oral communication performance, whether it was directly or indirectly effective on students’ oral communication performance. Not all verbal communication could be effective directly on the students’ oral communication performance or not all non-verbal communication skills could be effective on the students’ oral communication performance.
