Abstract

Abstrak: Pembelajaran sains dapat dipergunakan sebagai sarana untuk mengembangkan kemampuan kognitif, afektif, dan psikomotorik. Sains sebaiknya dipelajari dengan cara-cara yang memungkinkan siswa dapat menerapkan kemampuannya secara berkarakter dalam pemecahan masalah-masalah kehidupan sehari-hari. Masih banyak kasus yang mengindikasikan rendahnya karakter manusia Indonesia. Etika adalah sistem nilai yang memiliki makna sama dengan moral. Pengembangan pendidikan karakter seharusnya mengikuti langkah-langkah pengenalan nilai secara kognitif, pemahaman dan penghayatan nilai secara afektif, pembentukan tekad secara konatif, dan akhirnya pengamalan nilai secara nyata. Guru sains haruslah memberi kesempatan sebanyak mungkin kepada siswa untuk berpikir dan menggunakan kemampuan akalnya. Siswa dapat melakukannya dengan jalan terlibat secara langsung dalam berbagai kegiatan seperti diskusi kelas, pemecahan soal, atau bereksperimen. Siswa jangan hanya dijadikan objek yang pasif dengan beban hafalan berbagai macam konsep dan rumusrumus sains. Kata Kunci: membentuk karakter, pembelajaran sains, kemampuan kognitif, afektif, psikomotorik CHARACTER BUILDING THROUGH SCIENCE TEACHING AND LEARNING Abstract: The teaching and learning of science can be used as a means of developing the cognitive, affective, and psychomotoric abilities. Science should be learned in ways which enable students to apply their abilities with character in solving problems of every day life. There are still many cases indicating the low character of the Indonesian people. Ethics is a value system having the same meaning as morality. The development of character education should follow the steps of introducing values cognitively, understanding and internalizing the values affectively, the formation of determination conatively, and finally the implementation of the values in real life. Teachers of science should provide the students with ample opportunities to think and use their reasoning ability. Students can do it by being directly involved in various activities such as classroom discussions, problem solving, or experimenting. They should not only be made passive objects with the load of memorizing various concepts and science formulas. Abstract

The contextual scienceleaming strategy can be carried out to the optimum ifsupported by teachers' creativity and capability to make use ofthe potentials ofthe students, their school, and its environment The problem is whether teachers ofstudents leamiD.g science already have the capability to develop and implement a contextual learning strategy in their students. This article is written for the purpos~of increasing those teachers' knowledge and understanding ofthe afore­ said learning strategy in order that they can develop and to implement it in their science classes. Being contextual, it is a strategy relating instructional content withreal situations ofthe learners and encourag­ ing themto relate academic knowledge to its application in their lives as individuals and family or community members. Contextual learning has the following characteristics: I) emphasizing problem solving, 2) recognizing that teaching and learning need to occur in multiple context, 3) assisting students in learning how to monitor their leaming sd thattheybecomeseJf,.regu1ated leamers, 4) anchoring teach­ inginthe diverse life context ofstudents, 5) encouraging students to learn from each other, and 6) employing authentic assessment. Abstract

Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keefektifan pendekatan inquiry based learning untuk meningkatkan karakter disiplin, kreatif, percaya diri, dan kerja sama siswa. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode quasi eksperimen. Populasi penelitian adalah seluruh siswa kelas X dan kelas XI jurusan IPA di SMA Negeri 1 Godean dan SMA Negeri 1 Ngaglik. Teknik pengambilan sampel di SMA Negeri 1 Godean dilakukan dengan teknik cluster random sampling, sedangkan di SMA Negeri 1 Ngaglik dilakukan dengan teknik purposive sampling. Data diperoleh dengan menggunakan angket untuk setiap karakter. Angket yang digunakan bersifat tertutup. Pengukuran didasarkan pada skor yang diperoleh siswa berdasarkan isian angket. Teknik analisis data menggunakan standard gain. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pendekatan inquiry based learning lebih efektif daripada pendekatan konvensional untuk meningkatkan karakter disiplin, kreatif, percaya diri, dan kerjasama siswa dalam pembelajaran fisika. Kata Kunci: inquiry based learning, karakter, disiplin, kreatif, percaya diri, kerja sama THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING APPROACH TO IMPROVE SMA STUDENTS‘ CHARACTER IN PHYSICS TEACHING Abstract: This study was aimed to find out the effectiveness of using the inquiry-based learning approach to improve students’ character in physics teaching i.e. discipline, creativity, confidence, and cooperation. This research used the quasi experimental method. The population was all of X and XI grades of science students of SMA Negeri 1 Godean and SMA Negeri 1 Ngaglik. The sample of SMA Negeri 1 Godean was taken using the cluster random sampling technique while the sample in SMA Negeri 1 Ngaglik was taken using the purposive sampling technique. The data, collected by using a closed-ended questionnaire, were analyzed by the standard gain method. The findings showed that the inquiry-based learning approach was more effective than the conventional approach to improve students’ character in physics teaching i.e. discipline, creativity, confidence, and cooperation.
