Abstract

The relations between perfectionism, self-esteem, and depression were examined among 77 normal subjects (late adolescence college students). Multiple regression analysis was conducted to test the hypothesis that general perfectionism and self-esteem played a significant role in depressive symptoms. In addition to the regression analysis, product moment analyses were conducted to determine the correlation of each of the five dimensions of perfectionism with depressive symptoms. Results indicated that general perfectionism and selfesteem were significant predictors of depressive symptoms. The regression model informs that general perfectionism (β= 0,143; p

Abstract

This study seeks to evaluate the validity of a scale intended to measure actively open-minded thinking (AOT), and to explore whether AOT can predict academic performance. The Rasch model was applied to evaluate the scale?s construct validity through the mirt package in R. Scale validation was based upon a sample of university students in Surabaya (N=424), while regression analysis to predict academic achievement was based on a sub-sampel for which data was available (n=220). Rasch analysis results suggested that the 10-item self-report scale had good construct validity, especially when measuring participants from the lower end of the trait level spectrum. AOT was found to be positively and moderately correlated with conscientiousness and openness to experience. AOT also predicted higher performance in a course which assessed students? ability to analyse and evaluate arguments, as well as overall performance assessed by their grade point average (GPA) 18 months later. These results suggest that AOT is an important variable that can be adequately measured using a self-report instrument. Further work should focus on creating items which are more difficult to endorse.

Abstract

Epistemological understanding is an important part of college students’ intellectual development. The present study examines the structure of epistemological understanding on a sample of students in an Indonesian university. The study also compares epistemological understanding of the social and natural science disciplines. Participants were mostly female (58%), on average 17.9 years, and enrolled in either a social science (fashion design, law, and psychology; N = 575) or natural sciences study programme (engineering, pharmacy, and biology; N = 924). A Likert-type instrument was used to measure three dimensions of epistemological understanding regarding authority as a source of knowledge, the subjectivity of knowledge, and the changeability of knowledge. Eigen values and scree plot in the exploratory factor analysis indicate a four-factor solution. These factors referred to the three hypothesised dimensions, and one additional dimension reflecting beliefs related specifically to factual knowledge. Additional analyses show that knowledge in the social sciences are seen as more subjective and uncertain. Furthermore, while students generally trust epistemic authorities from both fields, the trust towards authority in the social sciences is associated with a belief that knowledge is subjective. The reverse pattern was found for the natural sciences. A possible explanation is that social science students recognised but were uncomfortable with the subjective nature of their discipline, and hence sought certainty from epistemic authorities.

Abstract

Abstract: The objectives of the research are to examine: (1) the relationship between parents’ education level as an indicator of socioeconomic status (SES) with students’ mathematics achievement, and (2) the interaction between parents’ education level and the intensity of parental involvement in predicting students’ mathematics achievement. The sample (N=2,867) was selected through stratified random sampling of Indonesian high school National Examination (NE) test takers in 2016. The sampling was based on careful consideration of the representativeness and the distribution of provinces, gender, type of school (general-vocational), and school status (public-private). Data was analyzed using parallel multiple mediator analyses. The findings highlight that: (1) compared to fathers, mothers’ education level had a stronger contribution to students’ achievement in mathematics, and (2) mothers’ involvement mediated the relationship between mothers’ level of education and students’ mathematics achievement. However, more intensive parental involvement was associated with lower mathematics achievement.

Abstract

This article presents findings on gender differences and the influence of family background on students’ EFL reading comprehension in Indonesia. A total of 265 students (48.3% female, average age 13.6 years) from grades 7 to 8 in four schools anonymously completed an EFL reading comprehension test. In contrast to prior findings showing girls’ advantage of first language literacy, this study found no gender differences in EFL reading comprehension. In line with prior studies on the effect of socioeconomic status on student achievements, parents’ level of education influenced students’ EFL reading comprehension. For boys, the effect of mother’s education occurred through the provision of literacy resources. For girls, by contrast, the effect occurred through mother’s involvement in their daughters’ reading activities, which in turn encouraged reading engagement and comprehension. These findings underscore the importance of gender-appropriate strategies to facilitate adolescents’ EFL reading engagement and comprehension.

Abstract

The fictional narrative is a form of literature often found in everyday life, such as in novels or short stories, comic strips in newspapers, and in poetry. Reading fictional literature has a positive effect, however previous research had not as yet shown any conclusive evidence that such reading increases empathy. This research was aimed at testing the influence of reading fictional narratives on empathy, mediated by narrative engagement. The method used in the research was an experimental one, with a pre-test/post-test control group design. 194 undergraduate students were actively involved as the research participants. The results of the analysis of data, using a Wilcoxon signed-rank test and a causal step approach indicated that reading a fictional narrative may significantly increase the empathy of the reader, and that the relationship of these two variables were partially mediated by narrative engagement. This research provided supportive data to the idea that fictional narratives may raise levels of empathy and that that influence is mediated by the variable of narrative engagement. The public is enjoined to read fictional narratives, such as novels, comics, short stories and poetry of a variety of genres, to experience an increase in empathy.
