Abstract

Expressing ideas successfully requires a writer’s ability in imagining how his/her readers will interpret his/her writing. The present research is replicating a part of Traxler and Gernsbacher’s research (1993) comparing between experimental group with selection task and control group with rating task. The experiment uses tangram geometric pictures of Traxler and Gernsbacher’s research (1993) to be described by the writers. The activity proceeds in three meetings each with one-week interval, either for the writer or the reader groups. The subjects are students of the Faculty of Psychology GMU presently writing their undergraduate thesis. The overall thirty-two students were assigned into three groups. Eight students were assigned as experimental writers with the selection task and another eight students were as control writers with the rating task. The rest were readers whose task was to read two writings of two writers of different writing groups. The data was the sum of pictures identified correctly by the readers on the basis of the writers’ description. Data analysis shows that there is no obvious difference between the experiment and control group in the improvement of writing skill (a student-t test analysis upon the difference of the mean of readers’ improvement between session 1 and 3, between experiment and control group is t=0.816; p

Abstract

Family has a responsibility in child’s well being, physically and psychologically. Family has important roles in educating and socializing children. It is the families a counselor should examine when children have problems with their life such as personality, or educational problems. The present research is aimed to make family profiles of children with such problems, on the basis of system approach. The profile is made on the basis of family characteristics as a system: family boundary, family rules, and sub-system interaction. The data was collected from Psychological Consulting Office of the Faculty of Psychology GMU. The information was obtained through in-depth interview as a part of counseling process, done by the researcher as a counselor. Fourteen cases then were content analyzed. The result shows that the families of the problematic children are characterized by: (1) vague or widely open family boundaries caused by relationships with extended families; (2) confusing if not inadaptive family rules; and (3) isolations, coalitions, low intensity, lesser warm and close relationships of family sub-systems. Abstract

This research set out to learn more about Javanese couple’s strategies in handling their conflict. The strategies of three couples from middle class social status, resident in the city of Yogyakarta, were explored by using semi-structured interview methods and repeating the interviews over three cycles. It was found that the strategies applied for managing conflict reflect avoidance of conflict, while the strategies for problem solving tend to be strategies related to self management, that is, the attempt to control oneself in order to cope with stress. It appears that these strategies are strongly influenced by traditional values and philosophies. Keywords: conflict- resolution; Javanese couples.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between father`s social support and related male adolescent’s social adjustment. The hypothesis tested was a positive correlation between social support from father and the related male adolescent’s social adjustment. The subjects of this research were 69 male students from three SMUNs in Jogjakarta lived with their fathers. Abstract

Getting married  is perceived as an  important phase in human life‐cycle. Just like  fashion, marriage has also its own trend or mode. In Indonesia  the  legend  of   Siti   Nurbaya illustrating a kind of marital arrangement in, at least, the first half of the past century. Such a trend  in marriage is any more popular these days. Young people today mostly prefer to marry their own choices, those already bond in engagement or girl or boy  friends they already mate. Another kind  of  trend  has  appeared  recently.  Some moslems prefer to marry without the phase of dating or engagement. Some even marry ones chose, or arranged by their ustadz (spiritual leader). The purpose of this study is to find out whether  a  difference  in  the  premarital relationship(with versus without engagement or dating) affect couples’ marital satisfaction. The  result  shows  that  there  is  a  very significant difference in marital satisfaction between  dating  and  non‐dating  couples. Explanation upon the phenomenon discussed. Abstract

This research is a case study conducted at the Unit Konsultasi Psikologi (Psycho-logical Consulting Unit) of the Faculty of Psychology, Gadjah Mada University. Five cases of school refusal on children and adolescents were studied qualitatively to examine the patterns of symptoms and causes of school refusal, the personality types, the family profiles, and the accom¬plishment of treatments applied. Data was gathered using clinical assessments including clinical observations, interview, intelligence tests (the WISC, SPM), and personality tests (the drawing tests, the Children’s Sentence Completion Tests). Symptoms of school refusal as observed from the clients include psychological – such as irritability and bad mood in the morning, as well as physiological – such as headache and diarrhea. School refusal, as seen from the cases, usually are precipitated by a negative experience at school, but roots in the frail, vulnerable nature of personality of the subjects. The clients’ personality is characterized with low self-esteem and high dependency. Four of five patients were last child and the other one was only child, suggesting that birth constellation may correlate with the incidence of school refusal on children and adolescents. The type of parenting that prolongs unhealthy attach-ment and does not promote sufficient inde-pendence may explain this correlation. Furthermore, the fact that four of five clients came from relatively problematic families may also indicate that children from such a family may have higher susceptibility to school refusal. Abstract

Self-confidence is an aspect in human life, particularly in achievement. A person with better self-confidence will be able to actualize his or her abilities, while another with lower self-confidence could be inhibited in actualizing his or her abilities.Unemployed adolescents tend to have low self-confidence because being unemployed itself is a threat to one’s security feeling. Such a condition may interrupt the development of the adolescents’ personality. Thus, such adolescents may need interventions to improve their self-confidence. The present research proposed to find out the effectiveness of group social support as a model of intervention. The subjects were 24 unemployed adolescents of Desa Tirtoadi, Mlati, Sleman. Twelve of which were assigned to theexperiment group and the other 12 to the control group.The self-confidence data was obtained three times (before, immediately, after, and one month after the intervention), using the scales of Self-Confidence and of Self-Esteem. A student-t analysis toward the gained scores shows a difference between the experiment group and control group (t = 4.29; p < 0.01).The experiment group shows significant improvement (X GIE = 25.83) while the control group shows less obvious improvement (X GIK = 1.58). It can be concluded that the intervention through group social-support is effective in improving the confidence of unemployed adolescent.

Abstract

Handwriting is a point to be scored in evaluating students’ achievement. For the elementary school students still learning to write this matter should not be ignored particularly in the Bahasa Indonesia subject. Cursive writing is to be mastered when a student enters his third grade and such writing would be useful until adulthood. However, this type of writing is found difficult to many students, even to those of the higher level education.The purpose of the present research is to explore psychological abilities of children with illegible handwriting that the basic problem of such children can be identified. The subjects were 3 third-grade students whose handwriting were rated as illegible by some teachers, and 1 student whose handwriting was not rated asillegible as a comparison. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children and the Bender-Gestalt test were administered. The data of WISC then were presented in profiles of some cognitive abilities. Indications of brain injury and emotional disturbance could be derived from the Bender-Gestalt test. The profile of each subject showed that there is no specific tendency of cognitive abilities, and no indication of brain injury and emotional disturbance.It is concluded that the illegibility of the subjects’ handwriting is merely the case of motor skill. The illegibility of handwriting has nothing to explain the students’ academic achievement since their academic achievements, except for one subjectwhose intelligence is below average, are satisfying.

Abstract

Kepercayaan diri merupakan salah satu aspek kepribadian yang penting dalam kehidupan manusia. Dari pendapat para ahli konsep diri dan harga diri mempunyai hubungan dengan tinggi rendahnya kepercayaan diri. Namun demikian, bagaimana arah hubungan tersebut belum diketahui. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membuktikan secara empirik hubungan antara konsep diri, harga diri, dan kepercayaan diri. Dengan subjek penelitian siswa SMP PIRI Ngabean sebanyak 208 orang, data diolah dengan analisis product moment dari Pearson. Diperoleh dukungan terhadap hipotesis penelitian yaitu bahwa ada hubungan yang positif antara konsep diri dan kepercayaan diri (rxy=0,808; p<0,01); dan ada hubungan yang positif antara harga diri dan kepercayaan diri (rxy=0,684; p<0,01). Hasil perhitungan ini dibandingkan dengan hasil analisis data yang sama dengan teknik korelasi parsial. Dengan mengendalikan pengaruh variabel harga diri diperoleh koefisien korelasi antarakonsep diri dan kepercayaan diri sebesar rxy=0,606 (p<0,01). Selanjutnya dengan mengendalikan pengaruh variabel konsep diri, diperoleh koefisien korelasi antara harga diri dan kepercayaan diri sebesar rxy=0,172 (p<0,05). Dari hasil analisis tersebut dapat dambil kesimpulan bahwa variabel konsep diri meruapakan prediktor yang lebih kuat terhadap kepercayaan diri. Hal ini didukung oleh dua hal. Pertama, koefisien korelasi antara harga diri dan kepercayaan diri lebih besar daripada koefisien korelasi antara harga diri dan kepercayaan diri. Kedua, penurunan koefisien korelasi antara harga diri dan kepercayaan diri cukup besar ketika variabel konsep diri dikendalikan pengaruhnya.
