Abstract

This study aims to explore the ancient Javanese leadership model: Asta Brata and develop the concept into an instrument to measure leadership. Asta Brata (Sanskrit means eight behavior) basically have a major philosophy that the art of leadership can be learned from eight nature symbols: earth, ocean, sky, stars, sun, moon, wind, and fire. Each element has different symbolic meanings which reflected the characteristic of ideal leader based on Javanese culture. Stages of the study was divided into two studies, (1) the exploration exploration construct construct leadership through content analysismanuscript texts containing the teachings of Asta Brata and (2) develop a psychological construct in order to create the scale. A total of 32 Likert scale butir successfully constructed and tested in adultsubjects (N=186). The results of the psychometric properties on a scale evaluations showed satisfactory reliability estimates (α = 0.86) and the construct validity (convergent and exploratoryfactor analysis) was pscychometrically accepted.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop a scale of happiness based on indigenous psychology approach and identify it’s psychometric properties. The research was divided into three step of scenario: 1. happiness construct exploration based on indigenous psychology approach; 2. Develop the construct into a scale of happiness (Likert model); and 3. Identify it’s psychometric properties (reliability and validity). The psychometric properties analyses consist of internal consistency reliability (alpha‐Cronbach) and construct validity (convergent‐discriminant). Multitrait‐multimethod matrix was used on the analysis in order to identify the convergent‐discriminant validity (including three comparative scales: Self‐Esteem Scale Rosenberg, Self‐Esteem Inventory Coopersmith, and PGC Morale Scale). The exploration result shows a unique indicators of happiness in the East native culture (N=604). The psychometric properties analysis show the alpha reliability α=0.895 and the validity was psychometrically accepted (N=111). The conclusion of this study: happiness is a unique construct that consist of strong contextual aspects and the measurement of a native happiness should used a scale of happiness that based on indigenous psychology approach. Further result will be discussed.

Abstract

Persistence is a key element contributing to college students’ success in an academic competition. We argue that dispositional optimism, and upward and downward counterfactual thinking have influence in determining individuals’ persistence. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the role of dispositional optimism, upward and downward counterfactual thinking among persistence of student participants in university competitions. It employed quantitative methods and data were collected through the use of Dispositional Optimism Scale, Counterfactual Thinking Scale, and Persistence Scale. College students (N=204) who have competed in university competitions were recruited using a non-probability sampling method. Multiple regression assisted the data analysis process. Result showed that both dispositional optimism and upward counterfactual thinking simultaneously predicted students’ persistence. However, downward counterfactual thinking was unable to predict the students’ persistence. The research suggests that student competitors should enhance their optimism by developing positive thoughts concerning future competitions, as well as forming upward counterfactual thinking in subsequent competitions.
