Abstract

Abstract: The 1984 SMA English curriculum states that SMA graduates are expected to master 4000 words. The curriculum also specifies the topics and then umber of words to be exposed to SMA students for each week (30 words per week). If it is accepted that each semester consists of 15 weeks, and each week the students actually learn 30 different words, then SMA graduates only learn about 2700 different words during their study at senior high school. Therefore, in my opinion the number of 4000 words also includes the words that should have been learnt by the them at SMP, that is, 1500 words according to the updated 1975 SMP English curriculum. However, Nababan (1984) states that we tend to forget about 40% of the words we have learned. If this is accepted, theoretically SMA graduates will only acquire about 2520 of the 4200 words (if the students only learn 2700 and 1500 at SMA and SMP respectively). The figure suggests that on average the students acquire about 14 different words per week during their study at SMP and SMA (2520 words divided by {12 semesters x 15 weeks}).

Abstract

The current research was to find out the effect of different types of feedback on the students' writing quality. The quasi-experimental research used is one group pre-test post-test design. The subject was 108 students taken from three classes. The data were analyzed by SPSS. The result showed that there is an improvement in the students’ writing by using teacher, peer and self-corrective feedback, but peer corrective feedback gives more effective improvement than the others. The students mostly focused on meaning not form. Besides these points, peer feedback encouraged the students to write reader-based meaningful texts. Therefore, this suggested that the teachers need to be aware and do the experiment with a wider range of feedback and error-correction strategies which are appropriate for different levels and students. Keywords: Corrective feedback, quality, writing.

Abstract

Borrowing of different linguistic units can be encountered in almost all Indonesian texts of various domains, including sport domains. This study aims at describing the functions of borrowing from English in Indonesian texts of sport domains. The data of linguistic units borrowed from English, both loanwords and metaphorical code-switches, in Indonesian texts of sport domains were taken from the sport articles of an Indonesian national newspaper in 2010—2011, and from three sport books, each concerns with techniques of playing sports, sport education, and sport for health. The linguistic units borrowed were analyzed their pragmatic functions based on their external factors, namely, their speech components. The research results show that the linguistic units borrowed from English hold all kinds of pragmatic functions proposed by Jakobson (1973: 54—57) in the texts of sport written in Indonesian. The results imply that even though the functions expressed in the linguistic units borrowed from English are based on some reasons, not all of the functions need to be expressed in those borrowed linguistic units.

Abstract

Introducing the right English words in an adequate number and levels to beginner EFL learners is of paramount importance to enable them to communicate and develop their English further. This corpus study is meant to investigate the number and levels of English words, and their frequency of occurrences in a set of three official English course books for Indonesian junior high school students of the seventh to ninth grades, published by The Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Education. The study was conducted by converting each of the three English books into MS Word documents, eliminating the non-English and very common loanwords, saving each course book in plain text, and processing the plain text using a word frequency analysis program. The results show the English course books contain (1) a sufficient number of English words for comprehension of simplified pictured texts but not for authentic texts, (2) the high-frequency words that belong to the first, second thousand, and academic words, each of which is in an inadequate number, and (3) the frequency of word occurrences in the three books that is unlikely to lead to incidental word learning if no further efforts are made by the students and teachers.
