Abstract

Abstract

Space spraying is still considered as the most powerful method to control the spread of dengue virus transmission, particularly in an emergency such as an outbreak. However, there is still limited information about how the knowledge and perception of people about space spraying against dengue. This study aimed to assess knowledge and community perception of space spraying against dengue in an endemic area. This study was a descriptive cross-sectional study, involved 273 respondents in three endemic areas in Kebumen Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. Structured questionnaires about knowledge and perception of space spraying were administered to the respondents. The 41.4% of respondents had poor knowledge about space spraying, and 42.1% had a negative perspective about space spaying. Only 15.4 % of respondents aware that space spraying applications must be carried out based on several criteria and procedures. Most of them assumed that space spraying can be applied anytime and feel secure when space spraying was applied in their near area. Lack of knowledge and false security on space spraying applications could make people less active to conduct routine practice of mosquito breeding site eradication. It is important to enhance community knowledge and perception of space spraying, so they could understand that space spraying application only for emergencies and routine mosquito breeding site prevention must be carried out regularly.

Abstract

Abstract. Gombong Subdistrict is one of dengue-endemic area in Kebumen Regency, Central Java. The high number of dengue cases in this area raises the question of whether there has been transovarial transmission occured from the Aedes sp. to their eggs. Transovarial transmission could be dangerous because the next generation of mosquitoes can directly become competent vectors as transmitters of the dengue virus (DENV). The purpose of this study is to detect dengue virus transovarial transmission in Aedes sp. in Gombong Subdistrict. This is a descriptive research in Gombong, Semanding, and Kali Tengah villages, Gombong Sub District. A total of 300 houses, 100 houses from each village were selected in this study. There were 600 Oviposition traps (ovitraps) were installed both inside and outside of houses for 6 days. Ovitraps were calculated by its Ovitrap Index (OI). Detection of transovarial transmission was carried by rearing field mosquitoes to Filial 1 then identified by RT-PCR assay. This study showed that OI in the three villages was higher in outdoor compared to indoor positions. All tested samples were negative DENV, indicated that there were no transovarial transmission occured at the study sites. Transmission in these study areas might still through horizontal mechanism transmission by mosquito bites. Although there is no transovarial transmission, awareness of dengue transmission must be continued by eradicating of mosquito nests such as 3M plus activities on a regular basis

Abstract

Introduction: Some post-trauma brain injury patients who were treated and declared to be discharged or continued at home experienced a collection of somatic, cognitive, and psychosocial symptoms. This study was conducted to determine the initial condition of the patient when admitted to the hospital with the incidence of post-concussion syndrome. Method: This study uses a prospective cohort approach. In this study identified functional changes in patients such as cognitive disorders and sleep disturbances with respect to severity. Cognitive impairment was measured using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and sleep disturbance was measured using the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). The sample were 49 patients of traumatic brain injury in the emergency department of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Results: The Age (p=0.000), GCS initial score (p=0.023), hospital admission diagnosis (p=0.000) and length of stay (p=0.000) had a relationship with the cognitive status of post-trauma brain injury patients. While the initial GCS score (p = 0.000) and the initial diagnosis of hospital admission (p = 0.001) had a relationship with sleep disturbances in post-trauma brain injury patients. Conclusions: Age, initial GCS score, hospital admission diagnosis and length of stay have a relationship with cognitive level in post-trauma brain injury patients. Initial GCS scores and early diagnosis of hospital admission have a relationship with sleep disturbances in post-trauma brain injury patients. These factors can be used as an initial identification when a patient enters the hospital emergency room and a consideration for the type of treatment and therapy given.
