Abstract

As Millennial generation, students nowadays have limitless concept of time and space, they broke logical and physical barriers during the process of communication including in the process of learning. Blanded learning and hybrid learning are one of the latest phenomenon in Education. In shortest perception students will encoder positive effect toward the uses of technology in school but in fact some of them also encounter obstacle and problems. This research aims to project the students’ pros and cons on the use of one of ICT called PADLET during the process of speaking activity. This research uses 35 students of one private university in Cimahi, Indonesia. Qualitative method used to provide detail finding associate with supportive theories.  Observation that was taken from both online processes during submitting and commenting the speaking video and offline situation were used and then strengthen by the use of open questions interview. From the data, it showed that students pros on the idea of; (1) collaboration, (2) Flexibility. (3) Autonomous Learning.  While on cons students mark on; (1) technicality issue, (2) Psychological elements.      Keywords: ICT; PADLET; Pro; Cons; Speaking.

Abstract

Salah satu aspek sulit dalam menulis bagi para siswa adalah mengorganisir gagasan supaya teks yang mereka buat tetap koherens dan kohesif (Brown & Hood, 1989). Mengetahui peningkatan kemampuan menulis siswa, termasuk dalam hal koherensi dan kohesinya, merupakan bagian dari Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan mengenai Bahasa Inggris (Depdiknas, 2006). Meng-assess kemampuan menulis siswa bisa melalui Analisis Thematic Progression (Theme & Rheme) yang dilakukan terhadap teks mereka (Danes, 1974). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kemampuan menulis naratif, dilihat dari aspek pola pengembangan tematik, dari 12 mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris IKIP Siliwangi Bandung di semester genap Tahun Ajaran 2018/2019. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa ada 110 Pola Pengembangan Tematik dalam 12 teks naratif dari para mahasiswa tersebut. Bila dihitung, Progresi Linier Sederhana (SLP) merupakan pola terbanyak pertama yang diterapkan pada teks naratif siswa di mana total kejadiannya adalah 60 (50%). Tema Konstan adalah pola terbanyak kedua dimana total kemunculannya adalah 50 (39,60%). Split Rheme Progresi merupakan pola terbanyak ketiga dimana total kemunculannya adalah 7 (4,42%). Dan pola terakhir yang paling banyak diterapkan pada teks naratif siswa adalah Derived-Hyper Theme Progress, di mana total kemunculannya adalah 5 (3,91%). Bisa disimpulkan bahwa 12 teks naratif para mahasiswa tersebut cukup bervariasi sehingga tidak monoton.

Abstract

Vocabulary learning is an important and inseparable part of every language learning process for learners. In this research, the implementation of crossword puzzles is considered as an effective way to teach vocabulary to students. Therefore, it is important to make teachers and students familiarized with this relaxed but useful technique. This study intends to describe the process of applying crossword puzzles in vocabulary teaching. This research was carried out at SMP SAIS Soreang Bandung School in class VIII as subjects. Qualitative methods are applied and for triangulation three data collection techniques are chosen such as observation, questionnaire, and interview. Observations were made twice. To complete the data, researchers used observation sheets during the learning process in class. Besides, researchers use learning plans to answer the first research question. To support the data, the results of the questionnaire were analyzed after observation. The interview is conducted with the teacher. The results showed that students were enthusiastic about learning vocabulary through crossword puzzles. Crosswords are good for facilitating thinking and problem-solving. Besides, students also experience increased vocabulary mastery through crossword puzzles. Keywords:  Crossword Puzzles, Vocabulary, Teaching

Abstract

This study was conducted to obtain information about dialect in student's potential whether it could be decided to speak fluently or not. Taken from one of institute which appear the idea to analyze the problem, the main instrument to collect the data was questionnaire and transform it to be narrative which aimed this research use qualitative method. From 4 dialects were used by the students namely Bataknese, Minangnese, Javanese and Sundanese which they use when speaking, especially the dialect’s intonation usage within English speaking. This will be impact on the learning method that might be constant rather than variable within English intonation usage. The questionnaire result will prove about the problem that occur in amid of the classroom. Moreover, this research has been supported from more than 10 theories instead. It contains many different topics related dialect and student's potential in speaking. From finding, the researcher obtained the data that talking with person who have strong dialect was not such a big problem to understand what does the person mean. The result is not change the dialect the person used, the only thing is practice English intonation to be better and develop the person's language potential to adjust the language the person speaks. Keywords:         Dialect, English intonation, Student’s Potential

Abstract

This study was created based on concerning the importance of efficient language use. The language use can be called efficient if the message is unambiguous, clear, and can be understood by both speaker and listener. This study purposes to investigate the violation of quality maxim, quantity maxim, relevance maxim and manner maxim of Grice Maurice maxim’s Cooperative Principle in the conversation of characters in Beauty and the Beast movie. In fact, there are several maxim violations that happened in human life especially figured in the movie. The maxim violation may cause misunderstanding while the conversation is going on. Descriptive qualitative method was used in this research, the data are collected from the conversation in the movie which contains coversational implicature in the character’s utterance. The result of the research shows that there is four type of maxims that are violated by Maurice’s coversation in Beauty and the Beast movie. The four type of it such as maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relevance and maxim of manner. The result of the research shows that the maxim of quality is dominant, because the character give lacks evident, maxim quantity, maxim of relation, and maxim of manner are also violated in this movie. Keywords:  Cooperative Principles, Movie, Violation

Abstract

The use of information and communication technology is very popular nowadays since face-to-face teaching and learning methods change to e-learning or distance learning as a consequence to prevent the spread of covid-19.  The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of Voice of America (VOA) Special English as a modern media in teaching and learning English. This study also explores the insight toward pros and cons of students as the main user in using VOA Special English media in learning writing and speaking. It is a qualitative descriptive research where the primary data analyzed is the development of student writing and speaking before, during, and after the implementation of VOA Special English. The participants of this research were 36 students of the first semester of English Education students in IKIP Siliwangi. The data were gained by observation, questionnaire, and interview. The result of the research showed that most of the participants (82%) agree that VOA Special English brings benefit in learning online and help them to empower their writing and speaking skill. In sum, the use of VOA Special English has a positive effect on students to empower and support their writing and speaking skill. Those skills will be very useful for developing and empowering their insight into learning English.Keywords: VOA Special English, writing, speaking, COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat berupa pelatihan Google Classroom kepada guru SMP dan SMA di Kecamatan Lemahsugih Majalengka ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran, meningkatkan efektifitas pembelajaran, serta membuat media belajar menjadi lebih variatif guna  meningkatkan minat siswa dalam belajar daring. Pelatihan ini dilaksanakan secara langsung di Kecamatan Lemahsugih dengan 30 guru SMP dan SMA sebagai peserta pelatihan. Protokol kesehatan diberlakukan guna mencegah penyebaran COVID-19. Terdapat tiga kegiatan dalam pelaksanaan pelatihan ini, yakni 1) pengenalan Google Classroom kepada para guru, 2) mendemonstrasikan tentang bagaimana cara menggunakan Google Classroom, dan 3) evaluasi. Selama kegiatan berlangsung, para guru menunjukkan antusiasmenya dengan mengajukan berbagai pertanyaan terkait dengan penggunaan Google Classroom sebagai media pembelajaran. Meskipun terdapat sedikit kendala terkait koneksi buruk yang dialami guru, namun dapat disimpulkan bahwa kegiatan pelatihan berjalan dengan lancar. Untuk kedepannya, diharapkan para guru dapat mengoptimalkan penggunaan Google Classroom karena berbagai fitur dari aplikasi ini sudah memenuhi kebutuhan para guru dalam melaksanakan pembelajaran daring.

Abstract

Communication is one of the most interactions that are often carried out as Social beings. This communication can be done if both speaker and listener can convey and understand their thoughts by using language. Language can be learned through discourse that includes all spoken or written text. The study of language in use is known as discourse analysis. The most important part of discourse analysis especially for written discourse is Cohesion which is divided into grammatical and lexical cohesion. There are two main types in lexical cohesion: reiteration and collocation. The researchers chose folklore as an object of research since it is a type of written discourse. The objective of this research is to identify the types of lexical cohesion that occur often in folklore. The subject of this research is “Little Red Riding Hood” folklore written by Leanne Guenther. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods and focuses on lexical cohesion, namely repetition and synonymy. The instrument that the researchers used are other journals, articles, electronic sources, and several other helpful resources. According to the findings of this research, “Little Red Riding Hood” folklore contains thirteen types of lexical cohesion, which include six repetitions and seven synonyms. Abstract

Menulis bukanlah sebuah keterampilan yang mudah, ia membutuhkan berbagai prasyarat seperti jumlah kosa kata, tata bahasa dan susunan kata yang menghasilkan makna. Menghadapi era masyarakat 5.0 yang merupakan lanjutan dari fase perkembangan manusia sejak berburu dan meramu, masyarakat agrikultur, masyarakat industrialisasi, dan masyarakat informasi, membuat menulis mendjadi faktor yang penting. Sebagian besar pertukaran informasi terjadi melalui tulisan melalui teknologi digital sebagai sarana untuk memenuhi kebutuhan pembangunan masyarakat dan membentuk nilai-nilai baru. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan di IKIP Siliwangi dengan peserta mayoritas mahasiswa berjumlah 40 orang yang disampaikan melalui webinar.  Dalam pelaksanaanya, ada dua tahap, yaitu: 1) Tahap pemaparan , yaitu pengenalan tentang apa itu masyarakat 5.0, kaitannya dengan menulis dan apa tujuan diadakannya webinar, 2) Tahap tanya jawab, dimana siswa menyampaikan permasalahan yang ada terkait topic.Kata Kunci:  masyarakat 5.0, menulis, teknologi digital.
