Abstract

This paper describes the bottom up-Shariah formalization in the Indonesian na- tion-state. The Islamic movement has been fighting for the Islamic Sharia in the provinces of South Sulawesi, West Java, and Aceh. The Islamic Sharia in these areas also had fundamental Islamic political powers such as Syarikat Islam and Masyumi in the past. Based on the facts pre- viously mentioned, this study is carried out by focusing on such three areas. This study used a sociology perspective on religious movements focusing on the study of human social life, groups, and societies. By using the sociology perspective, the aspects may be analyzed interpretatively given that according to Weber, so- ciology is the knowledge that sticks on the interpretative of social actions. The analysis above clearly shows the different dynamics of South Sulawesi, Aceh, and West Java. Aceh has more chance to implement Islamic Sharia through the legislation of the Law, Local Regulation (Perda), and Governor Decree since it leans more in the form of political “present” from the Central Government as the compensation of a prolonged conflict resolution. In South Sulawesi, the move- ment of Islamic Sharia implementation was born naturally through the efforts of various Muslim components which almost entirely and excitedly appeared from its capital province, Makassar (Ujung Pandang). While in the West Java, precise Islamic movement doesn’t move in Bandung, but it grows and develops through the Muslims aspiration and the Regents in some rural area such as Cianjur, Tasikmalaya, Garut, and Indramayu.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper discusses the on-going process of re-Islamisation in Java. In the context of re-Islamisation process, a Muslim is expected to be a pious one, both from the aspect of belief, knowledge, and practice. The process is characterized by the intensification of Islamic ritual practice and the enforcement of Islamic norms in various aspects of life. Additionally, it is accompanied by the deterioration of animism—as represented by amulets, heirlooms and shamanism—which are popular among abangan communities. Amulet is a peculiar feature in the belief and life system of Javanese society, namely the belief in the magical objects used by the owner to gain power, convenience, and magnificence. In Surakarta, the phenomenon of the decline of ‘magical’ amulets is perceived as the conversion process from abangan to santri. Yet it is a dissimilar kind of conversion compared to the previous ones.It reaffirms that in Java, Islamisation is an unending process nuanced by the volatility of socio-political and cultural dynamics.

Abstract

This study focuses on the way in which Muhammadiyah, one of Indonesia’s largest Islamic organizations, stood in the 2019 General Election. Like its counterpart Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah has marked the moderation of Islam in Indonesia, different from Islam elsewhere in the Middle East. Since its establishment, Muhammadiyah has urged its members not to join any specific political party, but rather to take a moderate position in political pragmatism and support patriotism in broader national interest. Likewise, in the 2019 election, Muhammadiyah did not organizationally support any candidates, citing its “middle way” approach. However, this study identifies a dualism in the political attitudes of Muhammadiyah’s elites. Even without official orders or prohibitions from the central leadership, some Muhammadiyah members got involved and carried their organization’s attributes to support certain candidates, resulting in political division within the organization. Some members of the organization took a clear political stance, whereas others remain neutral. This created tension within the organization in both elite and grass-root level. The main data for this study were collected through interviews, unstructured discussions, and focus group discussions with several Muhammadiyah elites.[Artikel ini melihat posisi yang diambil salah satu organisasi Islam terbesar di Indonesia, Muhammadiyah, dalam Pemilu 2019.

Abstract

The Padri Movement, also known as the White Group Movement, grown up in Minangkabauin 1821 – 1837, on one side, had been a strong and militant struggle against Dutch colonizationin Sumatra. On the other side, this movement also raised as a power of reform, bringing together a strong and militant mission of Islamic Purification. This movement hadraised a violence controversy, both when it conflicted with traditional power and when itexpanded its areas of movement to the Batak Land. In the perspective of Sociology, boththe Padri Movement and its militant and violence actions brought in every expanded socialor religious movement cannot be separated one and each other. This is caused by the factthat such a movement is closely related to a strict religious ideology and faith, and at onceit also closely related to a complicated sociological condition at that time. Therefore, amulti-perspective is necessary to understand complicated socio-religious movements. Keywords: Padri Movement, Religious Movement, Islamic Purification.
