Abstract

Onomatopoeia is one example of iconic signs influenced by the culture of the origin of the speakers. Translating an onomatopoeic word will need more than just a dictionary, but also culture and linguistic understanding of both source and target languages. Dealing with this issue, this research attempts to investigate how the onomatopoeias featured in the Finance Smurfs comic is translated into Indonesian. The data were obtained from Finance Smurfs comic and its translated version. Using articulatory phonetics to describe 47 onomatopoeias found in the comic, 43 are classified as iconic in both SL and TL, while 4 of them are not iconic. In addition, although the forms of onomatopoeias in source and target language are different their meanings are maintained based on the context.

Abstract

Crystal (1998) points out everyone plays with language or responds to language. We play with language when we manipulate it as a source of enjoyment, either for ourselves or for the benefit of others. We take some words, phrases, sentences, and other linguistic features and make them do things that they do not normally do. This language manipulation can result in humor. Humor has formed a substantial part of Javanese culture. Some jokes in Javanese contain local wisdom and this, according to Bascom (in Wijana, 2003) plays an important role to maintain the social and cultural norms. This paper examines the humor used in Sing Lucu rubric which contains jokes in Panjebar Semangat magazine. In Indonesia, there are only a few printed media that specialize in Javanese language and culture. One of them is Panjebar Semangat. It is a magazine that maintains Javanese culture, especially by the use of Javanese language and Javanese related contents. This paper aims to identify the types of humor and to explore the multiculturalism through the Javanese language expression. This study is framed by drawing on theories on humor, language play, and ambiguity. The result shows that there are three types of humor used in Sing Lucu: positive, negative, and neutral. Positive and neutral jokes have entertaining contents, while negatives jokes contain stereotyping of certain races. Some jokes are not based on facts and therefore they do not always represent certain races stereotyped in such jokes.

Abstract

When delivering a speech or talk, a speaker shares a great deal of background knowledge to the audience. However, as human being, the speaker often gets nervous and forgets the words to say. Sometimes the speaker is not able to memorize all information that s/he wants to present to the audience. In fact, during the talk, the speaker must speak fluently to maintain a good situation and communication to the audience. Therefore, to fill a gap during a talk because the speaker could not memorize every detail of information to be presented, using vague language sometimes becomes an option. Vague language may also be used for other purposes besides nervousness and memory problem, i.e. as a tension management (Trappes-Lomax, 2007). This research explores vague language as tension management device used by Jimmy Kimmel as the host in the Oscars opening monologue in 2017. The method used in this research was qualitative descriptive since it describes the data in the form of word or sentence. The results demonstrate that Jimmy Kimmel used vague language types such as conventional indirectness, category and quantity approximation, hedges, modal expressions, implicitness, euphemisms, softeners and down toners as tension management devices. Furthermore, vague language can function as hedges for Jimmy Kimmel’s statements when the information he presented is not precise.

Abstract

A stand-up comedy performance is not only about amusing the audiences with the joke, but it also has other functions. This research analyzes the pragmatic strategies and function of Louis C.K.’s stand-up comedy concert “Oh My God”. Raskin and Attardo’s (1992) General Theory of Verbal Humor (GTVH) and Grice’s (1975) maxims of cooperative principle were employed as the framework of the analysis. A descriptive qualitative method was also used to analyze the data. The result reveals that Louis C.K.’s jokes in this concert mostly violate the maxim of quantity to generate laughter through exaggeration and faulty reason. Furthermore, Louis C.K.’s stand-up comedy is not only a way to entertain but it also has another function, that is, to deliver certain messages to the audience. Louis C.K.’s joke is also a form of giving a narrative to the audiences to understand the reality that people face in another point of view.

Abstract

Being a stand-up comedian with medical issue requires the ability to apply certain techniques to create humor when performing stand-up comedy. Josh Blue (JB) is one of those well-known stand-up comedians diagnosed with cerebral palsy. This study aims to investigate the linguistics aspects applied by JB in delivering his jokes and how these aspects relate to identity JB wants to present. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method to analyze the data. The results reveal that JB uses irony in his stand-up comedy. In terms of linguistic features, JB mostly applies silent pause, while in joke technique JB applies self-ridicule. These findings suggest that the linguistics aspects used by JB present that disability can be a special identity that affects people’s perception and their ways of interaction with other people. JB linked each of his experience of being disabled by wrapping it well as his joke technique. JB has privilege in processing his disability into a primacy in joke technique without sounding condescending and even sarcastic. HIGHLIGHTS:Irony is the language feature commonly used by Josh Blue as he often shares his experiencesimplicitly. Ridicule is the most dominant joke technique used by Josh Blue since most topics that heshares are about his condition of being disabled. The linguistics aspects used by Josh Blue demonstrates that disability identity can be aspecial phenomenon that affects people’s perception and their ways of interaction withother people.

Abstract

This study aims to discover language choices of third year English students at Udinus in following domains: settings, participants, and topics as well as to examine those students' attitudes to Javanese. The study used descriptive qualitative method since it focused on examining the respondents to gain profound information from them. The data were collected through the questionnaire consisting of questions about the respondents' backgrounds, language choice and language attitudes to Javanese language. Language attitudes are measured with likert scale composed answers from strongly disagree, disagree, neutral, agree, and strongly agree. The questionnaire was distributed to 20 English students of third year of Udinus who are able to speak Javanese or were born and live in one of the cities in Javanese-speaking provinces. The data were analyzed using descriptive method. It was meant to describe and interpret the data descriptively. The findings revealed the use of mix of Javanese and Indonesian and Indonesian itself are more popular in the most parts of domains due to factors of social dimensions; however, overall the respondents show favorable attitudes to Javanese. It can become input and output for related institutions to make sure its sustainability and its rising by producing program.

Abstract

A stand-up comedian needs to have good communication skills and ability to deliver material in a humorous way. This becomes a challenge for a comedian that has speech impairment, one of whom is Nina G, the stuttering comedian. Wingate (in Bloodstein, et.al, 2021) argues that stuttering is characterized by involuntary repetitions or prolongations in the utterance of short speech elements that occur frequently and are not readily controllable. These characteristics are also observable in her speech. This research is aimed at investigating the features of stutters in Nina G’s speech, specifically in terms of the linguistic elements such as syntactic (phrases), lexical (words), phonetic (sounds) elements of the stutter. The data were taken from Nina G’s performances uploaded on YouTube, and a descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the data. The results of the preliminary analysis reveal that the most dominant characteristic is sound repetition (48.3%) which occurs in common nouns (43.4%) and when the initial sound begins with [s] (39.16%). The next is word repetition (17.6%) which frequently occurs in simple preposition and simple conjunction, followed by prolongation (12.3%) which occurs in common noun and the sound [ɪ] (13.62%). Then, syllable repetition (11.9%) happens most when she utters lexical verbs and initial syllable beginning with [s] (23.52%). The rest are phrase repetition (4.7%) that occurs in adverb and simple preposition, and block (5.2%) which mostly appears in lexical verb. Thus, it can be concluded that Nina G’s speech demonstrates certain patterns of stutter characteristics. Furthermore, it is also found that the situations she is in do not affect her stuttering characteristics at all. This research also suggests that despite her speech impediment, Nina G still succeeds in communicating her ideas and delivering jokes in her stand-up comedy performances.
