Abstract

Integrated teaching has been advocated and implemented for decades. Lately it has been accelerated by the development of video making. This study aims to investigate the benefits of integrating video making in a speaking class of the 29 first semester students of a public university in Surabaya, East Java Province, Indonesia. It employed action research which was done to improve the quality of the teaching and learning process of the class. The data were collected through direct observation in the classroom, video reviews, and survey. The findings showed that the integration of video making in a speaking class gave benefits to students in the form of four components i.e. social, language and literary, psychological, and technical. The class has been successful in integrating the video making in a speaking class which means that the integration may be applied again in the same class in the future or for a wider scope with similar conditions or settings.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji tentang relasi kuasa yang terdapat dalam film Ku Cumbu Tubuh Indahku. Kekuasaan dapat dimaknai dan diulas sebagai sebuah kekuatan atau pengaruh yang dimiliki oleh individu ataupun organisasi yang berusaha untuk memaksakan kehendaknya kepada pihak lain. Secara tidak sadar, kekuasaan bekerja dalam jaringan kesadaran publik. Dalam hal ini kekuasaan tidak datang dari luar, akan tetapi dari dalam untuk menentukan struktur, aturan dan sebuah hubungan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah; a) mengetahui bentuk relasi kuasa dalam film Ku Cumbu Tubuh Indahku (b) menjelaskan dampak relasi kuasa film Ku Cumbu Tubuh Indahku. Untuk mencapai tujuan penelitian tersebut, penelitian ini menggunakan teknik melihat, observasi dan catat. Metode analisis data penelitian ini menggunakan teknik analisis deskriptif. Hasil penelitian ini adalah (1) Bentuk relasi kuasa dalam film Ku Cumbu Tubuh Indahku ada dua, yaitu relasi kuasa atas pikiran dan relasi kuasa atas tubuh. Bentuk relasi kuasa atas pikiran dalam film Ku Cumbu Tubuh Indahku berupa stigmatisasi, dan kontrol. Selanjutnya bentuk relasi kuasa atas tubuh sosial dan seksual berupa objektifikasi, dominasi dan kontrol. (2) Dampak relasi kuasa. Dampak tersebut dilakukan terhadap dua representasi kuasa yaitu sebagai berikut: a) Budaya, yaitu melawan norma-norma yang berlaku di masyarakat terkait dengan norma gender dan seksualitas. b) Lembaga, melawan keinginan Lurah sehingga di cap komunis.

Abstract

The phenomenon of profanation of sacred traditions in the tourism industry is increasingly prevalent. Considering that matter, some steps should be taken to avoid the tradition of desacralization. This research was done by a field research approach to identifying the values of the traditional ceremony of Tengger, especially Yadnya Kasada, Yadnya Karo, and Unan-unan. This research was located in Tosari and Ngadiwana Village, Tosari, Pasuruan, East Java. The data was collected by unstructured and open-ended interviews. The results showed that their beliefs and obedience in conducting the ancestral teachings must be balanced through a deep and comprehensive understanding of traditional values. On the other hand, adaptation strategies must be carried out to stabilize themselves with modernization. These are done to preserve the existence of tradition without eliminating the essence of sacredness that has been attached to it. Therefore, one of the steps that can be taken is to separate the tradition from commodification without resisting the flow of modernization

Abstract

The New Order regime in Indonesia was marked with a strong and centralized power including in defining motherhood. This article is aimed at investigating how the “Ibu” or motherhood becomes a contested arena between nameless Ibu and Tante Mirah and how this arena reflects the contestation of tradition and modernity in Java in the 1980s. Using close reading technique and contextualization, an investigation is done to see how the one role is contested by the two women. The nameless Ibu represents traditions shaped by the cultural and traditional milieu in Solo, Central Java. Meanwhile Tante Mirah migrates to Jakarta and builds her new economy and life.  It is evident that performing traditions has drained out Ibu’s financial resources. At the same time, Tante Mirah is successful in accumulating wealth. Consequently, Ibu goes bankrupt and lets Mirah take the son back. The novel documents the inevitable change of socially defined motherhood performed in the center of Javanese culture.

Abstract

Sebagai sebuah kebudayaan, Kejawen Black Metal adalah satu bentuk subkultur hibrid yang tercipta atas inkorporasi kebudayan Jawa yang ada di Indonesia dan subkultur Black Metal yang berkembang di Eropa. Sebagai sebuah bentuk musik, Kejawen Black Metal adalah satu subgenre dari Black Metal yang pada praktiknya memasukkan unsur-unsur ke-Jawaan, yaitu konsep mistik yang berkembang dan eksistensinya dipercaya nyata dalam kebudayaan masyarakat Jawa. Melihat hibriditas dari eksistensinya, subkultur tidak serta merta mengambil dan meniru segala konsep yang ada pada kebudayaan akarnya. Maka dari itu, penelitian ini ditujukan untuk menemukan dan menjelaskan apa sebenarnya esensi dan tendensi dari Kejawen Black Metal sebagai sebuah subkultur hibrid. Secara semiotik, Kejawen Black Metal dilihat sebagai sebuah simbol yang bermakna sebagaimana mestinya, namun berdiri sendiri membentuk nilai yang berbeda menurut konteksnya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif-kualitatif dengan data yang digali lewat dokumentasi yang berhasil dilakukan oleh pihak lain. Berdasarkan penelitian ditemukan bahwa secara esensi, Kejawen Black Metal tetap merupakan perlawanan kepada sesuatu yang berbeda dengan subkultur akarnya. Selain itu, dalam konteks tendensi, Kejawen Black Metal menyimbolkan kebebasan yang ditujukan untuk mengingatkan kembali tentang kebudayaan Jawa namun dengan cara dan konsep yang berbeda dalam pembawaannya.   As a culture, Kejawen Black Metal is a form of hybrid subculture made of Javanese culture of Indonesia and the Black Metal subculture that grows in Europe. As a music, Kejawen Black Metal is Black Metal subgenre that its practices incorporates Javanese mystical concepts whose existence is believed to be true in Javanese culture. Seeing the hybridity of its existence, this subculture does not necessarily take and copy all concepts exist in its root culture. Therefore, this study aims to find and explain what actually Kejawen Black Metal’s essence and tendency is as a hybrid subculture. Through Roland Barthes' semiotics, Kejawen Black Metal is seen as a symbol whose meaning stands as it should be, but also standing independently to form different values based on particular context. The study uses a descriptive-qualitative method with extracted data based on indirect documentation that has been successfully carried out by other parties. The result, it is clear that in essence, Kejawen Black Metal remains a struggle but against something different from its root subculture. Therefore, in the context of tendency, Kejawen Black Metal symbolizes freedom that intends to remind people about the Javanese culture but in different ways and concepts in their nature.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menunjukkan bagaimana asimilasi dan akulturasi budaya punjungan yang ada didalam masyarakat multietnis serta menggambarkan keharmonisan interaksi sosial antara etnis Minang dengan etnis Jawa. Metode kualitatif dalam penelitian ini didukung dengan observasi dan juga wawancara. Data dikumpulkan dengan cara mencatat hasil observasi dan wawancara dari narasumber terkait. Setelah pencatatan data dikelompokkan berdasarkan dengan rumusan masalah lalu dianalisa dengan cara mendeskripsikan dan menginterpretasikan hasil wawancara berdasarkan teori interaksi sosial yang mana berfokus pada interaksi asosiatif mengenai akulturasi dan asimilasi. Hasil pembahasan ditemukan bahwa asimilasi dan akulturasi budaya terbentuk secara positif mampu mempengaruhi masyarakat baik pendatang maupun masyarakat asli dalam berinteraksi sosial. Terjadinya pernikahan antara Jawa Minang menyebabkan budaya penarikan garis keturunan menjadi lebih fleksibel tidak lagi terpaku pada hal matrilinieal ataupun patrilinieal. Sehingga, pada prosesi pernikahannya adat yang dilaksanakan juga menjadi lebih fleksibel terbukti dengan adanya punjungan yang juga dilakukan oleh masyarakat asli. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa kedatangan para transmigran di bumi minangkabau diterima dengan baik sehingga mampu membaur dengan budaya minang..Diharapkan dengan adanya penelitian ini mampu meminimalisir kasus-kasus konflik antar etnis yang terjadi di desa sasaran tranmigrasi dan menunjukkan bagaimana kebudayaan baru dapat diterima menjadi kebudayaan campuran antar etnis terkait.

Abstract

The contemporary Hollywood cinematic landscape is commonly filled with popular films that seek mass legitimacy. It is different from theatrical works or Broadway that are specifically aimed at connoisseurs. The ample evidence of popular films infers that American cultural field constructs its logicality in effect of this system. It affects at how one distinctively perceives theatre or Broadway as “art” and films as “entertainment", leading the actors within them to seek to be legitimized as an “actor/artist” in a distinctive way. This article specifically aims to diagnose this condition through Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu’s film entitled Birdman (2014) that tells a story of a washed-up American film actor who wishes to revive his career on Broadway. The research utilizes Pierre Bourdieu’s theory on the mechanism of symbolic power, capital, and trajectories to reveal the dynamics of the field in legitimizing one’s status as an actor and the paths one takes to be legitimized as an artist. The findings suggest the asymmetrical position between Broadway and films leads to exertions of symbolic violence as portrayed by Birdman. The skillset to act is not a measurement for one to be called as an “actor”, rather it is the complex nexus between the field and the agent’s background that determines the legitimacy.

Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this study is to describe the cultural values of ghost folklore in the YouTube content presentation of the Rizky Riplay channel. This research is qualitative by using descriptive method as a problem study of the object under study. Sources of data in this study are videos on Rizky Riplay's youtube channel that present illustrations of ghost storytelling in the form of animation. The data collection technique used in this research is a case study of videos on Rizky Riplay's youtube channel. Data processing techniques in this study include: 1) matching the data from the findings; 2) conduct a systematic review of the data; 3) analyze the findings in accordance with the issues raised for later interpretation into the results of the analysis; 4) drawing conclusions. The results of the analysis show that: first, there are product innovations on Rizky Riplay's youtube channel and the cultural values of ghost folklore that have shifted in the digital era. Not only as an educational and religious value but also as a means of entertainment. Second, Rizky Riplay's Youtube Channel is considered to have made a fortune through the help of ghost animations that are the main characters in each of its content. Third, the ghosts in the form of animations/cartoons are considered to have made youtube channel owners rich by doing endorsements/promotions of products and services for human needs as well as the monetization system from YouTube. Not only as an educational and religious value but also as a means of entertainment. Abstract

Women in a patriarchal system have a close relationship with domestic roles. This study aims to describe the construction of women's roles faced by a woman before becoming a prisoner in a short story entitled Surat dari Tini Chen: Siapa Saya written by Tini (pseudonym), a former convict. This research is descriptive qualitative in nature and has qualitative data taken through library techniques. The approach used in this study is structural story analysis and feminist literary criticism with an intersectionalism approach to explaining social phenomena that become the factor of oppression. The results show that three factors (i.e., education, power relations, and psychology) support the formation of structural oppression on Tini. The economic condition is the estuary that underlies the emergence of the factors.
