Abstract

http://dx.doi.org/10.17014/ijog.vol4no1.20092Submarine sliding frequently cause tsunami or a high velocity big wave around the submarine slid- ing area which enable to reach a long distance. This sliding is not always as a causal factor for hazard and even associate with storm and earthquake. Some of them occur in a narrow area and it’s just formed due to gravitational movement. Different with mechanism of landslide, which is commonly due to water saturated soil, the submarine sliding is a more complex event. The submarine sliding is an important natural process which causes a big volume of sediment mass moves from a shallow area to a much deeper area of seafloor. There are many types and causal factors of seafloor instability, but the sliding terminology is predominantly used for the phenomena. A variety of seafloor materials, environments and sediment masses are some extreme influential factors in creat- ing the types of submarine sliding. The reflector of seismics is usefull to interpret the indications of the occurrence of geological structure and sub-marine slumping In case of the Flores Sea, earthquake is a major causal factor for creating submarine sliding. The bigger magnitude of earthquake, the greater the dimension of submarine sliding. Eventually, it may affect to the more possible occurrence of a potential hazardous tsunami.

Abstract

DOI: 10.17014/ijog.v5i3.102The Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey has been carried out around the Sidoarjo mud eruption. The aim of the survey is to see how far the development of shallow subsurface geological condition related to the eruptions that frequently occur around the main eruption. Ground Probing Radar is one of the geophysical method which is developed as a tool for a relatively shallow and detailed subsurface geological survey. The use of GPR method is not different with the seismic reflection method. The penetration depth of GPR method depends on electric properties of subsurface geological condition such as electric conductivity and dielectric constant. Both of these properties are related to physical properties of soil or rock such as water content and salinity. The result of the survey shows that at a shallow depth the geological structure such as fold, fault, and joint is frequently seen. Based on these results, the GPR method is very useful to decide the indication of potential area of small mud intrusion, so that the result can be used to help the mitigation plan.

Abstract

The bottom sea surface sediments of Indramayu water is characterized by differences of type and distribution of these sediments. The geochemistry and index properties tests give the information about the natural condition of water content and the other physics and chemical properties of sediments. The empirical relation have been developed between index properties and general properties for land soil or sediments. Most of that empirical relationship can be applied for marine surficial sediments, because in general the terrigenous sediments that similar  with the sediments which was transported from land or coastal zone to the bottom sea. The result of geochemistry and index properties test shows that the characteristics of sediments in Indramayu sea water appear to be difference from one sample to the another sample. This condition is probably caused by the difference of distribution of clay minerals or the rock origin of sediments .Key word : Geochemistry and Index properties, clay sediments, sea bottom surface sediments.
