Abstract

The correlation in bone microstructure for ultrasound pulse echo technique is still less accurate compared to through transmission technique. Previous works demonstrated, reflected two modes wave has significant association with bone porosity. The paper aims is to conduct simulation using pulse echo technique to examine the relationship between fast and slow waves with porosity of 2-dimensional cancellous bone models by comparing the result to through transmission technique. The “incident” and “reflected” waves were separated using bandlimited deconvolution method by estimating time threshold of fast and slow waves' transfer function. The parameters of the waves were computed, plotted versus porosity for six different thicknesses and the correlation coefficients between them were compared. The incident and reflected fast wave attenuations show marginally significant correlation with porosity for both bone models orientations. Wave propagation for parallel orientation dominated by incident and reflected fast wave, meanwhile, perpendicular orientation dominated by incident slow wave. The thickness factor affected wave amplitude but less affected the attenuation. Because of propagation loss, reflected wave shows lower correlation to porosity compared to incident wave. Hence, analyzing fast and slow waves might improve the measurement accuracy of pulse echo technique compared to using single mode wave to estimate bone quality.

Abstract

This paper presents the fabrication of conducting polymer sensor which comprise of graphene-poly styrene-co-maleic acid (PSMA) composite that responds to volatile organic compound (VOC) via a change in the electrical resistance of the sensors. Five sensors composed of different material ratio were fabricated to find out the most prominent weight percentage ratio (wt %) for optimum sensor response. Those materials were deposited onto silver electrode using drop-casting method. NI Card PCIE-6323 measures the voltage obtained from the sensor circuit and the resistance of the gas sensor monitored using LabVIEW instrument. It was observed from the experiments that combination of 60% graphene and 40% PSMA gives the highest sensor response.

Abstract

The increasing demand of smart garment for monitoring people’s health is due to comfortability, lightweight and flexibility properties of the textile could offer to the user. The textile-based electrocardiography (ECG) electrode is an alternative of commercially available silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) electrode which could cause skin allergies to certain users and is not suitable for long-term monitoring electrode. In this paper, we report the performance of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) coated cotton fabric electrode to the effect of longevity and temperature. The ECG waveform and signal-to noise ratio (SNR) of the rGO-coated cotton electrodes were compared to that the performance of Ag/AgCl electrodes. The reliability characterization confirmed the rGO-coated cotton fabric conductance maintain at more than 80% even after 100 days of fabrication and the conductance measurement is increasing with respect to the temperature applied. The electrode shows lower in impedance value and the performance in acquiring ECG signal is comparable with the Ag/AgCl electrode. The vertical position rectangle-shaped electrode is recommended in measuring ECG signals. In conclusion, the rGO-coated cotton electrode with flexible dry-type electrode and excellent performance especially reliability and in capturing ECG signal had shown a promising result for further development.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to prove the capability of vinyl cutting technique to cut the conductive traces of electronic circuit layout which used a copper tape (Copper tape 1181 from 3M) on flexible substrate to replace the method of using nano-scale particle material. A wireless electrocardiography (ECG) circuit was integrated and fabricated on flexible substrate, namely a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate by using vinyl cutting method to produce the conductive line traces. After that, the fabricated circuit is used for acquiring ECG signals from a patient simulator and human subjects to measure the performance differences and compatibility as a wearable device. In the data processing stage, ECG data were denoised using sym20 from Wavelet Transform tool provided by MATLAB. Then, Signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) was calculated and used as the signal quality indicator. At the end of the study, flexible circuit performance was compared to MIT-BIH Arrhythmia database and it shows that there is no significance difference between both. In conclusion, vinyl cutting method shows a promising fabrication output on PET substrate as the performance of both flexible ECG circuit is comparable with rigid ECG circuit by a previous study.

Abstract

Capacitive ECG bioelectrodes are potentials for wearable and long-term physiological monitoring applications. In non-contact ECG recordings, the dielectric material sets limit to smooth bioelectric signal acquisition. Previously used dielectrics are rigid, unconformable on the skin, induce artefact and triboelectric noise, and becomes unstable when they absorb skin exudates. Recently, polymeric materials such as PDMS have gained different biomedical applications because it is biocompatible, flexible, and easy to fabricate. However, its use as a dielectric for capacitive ECG sensing is poorly reported. In this study, 15 samples of thin PDMS films of various thicknesses were fabricated by varying the proportion of the Sylgard 184TM silicone elastomer to the crosslinker from Dow Corning Corporation and manually deposited on acrylic glass substrates. The composition ratio and thickness were used to tune the structure and dielectric properties of the films. The effects on the capacitance generated by each dielectric film were measured using the parallel plate method, and their corresponding values of relative permittivity was also estimated. The results obtained reveal that PDMS films made from a composition ratio of 10:2 yielded the maximum capacitance and relative permittivity. In contrast, the film with 0.14mm thickness revealed the highest value of capacitance (31pF). The recorded values of capacitance demonstrate the feasibility of PDMS dielectrics for capacitive ECG bioelectrodes.

Abstract

Electrocardiograph (ECG) is a measuring device that used in hospital to monitor electrical activity of heart. Commonly used ECG device is a Holter monitor, a portable and wired device, which is bulky and not suitable for measuring and recording athlete's heart activity during training. The objective of this study was to design the ECG monitoring system as an Internet of Things (IoT) device, equipped with a temperature detector to detect user's body temperature. The ECG signals and the temperature were transmitted wirelessly using Bluetooth transmission to the mobile applications (apps). Both signals were set to display on mobile apps which was developed using Blynk application. At the end of this project, the signals were shown on the mobile apps and the user could monitor their own ECG signals as well as to share with their caretaker or physician later.
