Abstract

Several studies have shown the impact of environmental factors on student learning approaches. Despite the importance of such studies, studies on technical learners are few. Thus, this study aimed to determine the influence of learning environment on Polytechnics students’ learning approaches in Malaysia. Learning environment plays an important role in the cognitive, effective and social domains of students because it could improve students’ learning outcomes.  Learning approaches refer to the ways students deal with academic tasks that are related to learning outcomes.  This study used Course Experience Questionnaire (CEQ) and Revised Two-Factor Study Process Questionnaire (RSPQ-2F) to collect the research data.  Data were analyzed using AMOS Version 18.  Multiple regressions were conducted to predict learning environment factors that influenced the level of students’ learning approaches.  The result shows that effective teaching is a major factor that influences students' deep approach followed by the assessment, learning resources and clear objectives.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Polytechnic in Malaysia. This study was designed with Context, Input, Process and Product (CIPP) model. Project-Based Learning is a different approach than the traditional learning in the sense that it is a student-centered learning approach based on the principles of constructivism. This study involved a random sample of 118 students and 43 supervisors in the Mechanical Engineering Department in Polytechnic Kota Bharu Malaysia. The instrument used in this study were a set of questionnaire. In terms of finding ideas, both students and supervisors agreed that students were encouraged to assess the real problem by their supervisors. However, the supervisors were uncertain whether the students went to the library to get the ideas for their project. In addition, the supervisors were barely agreed about the creativity of the students in finding the project ideas. However, students and their supervisors believed that critical thinking and creativity were needed in the Project-Based Learning. The respondents also believed that e-SOLMS helped the students to work in group to complete the project.

Abstract

Technical and Vocational Education is one of the various disciplines that believed could encourage the country’s economic growth. Project-Based Learning or PBL was introduced in the Malaysian polytechnics curriculum in terms to produce creative and innovative graduates Thus, Project-Based Learning was introduced because of the ineffectiveness of the traditional lecture method. This study was a kind of descriptive study intended to examine the perception of students and supervisors regarding the Project-Based Learning at one Polytechnic in Malaysia. A population of 170 would be represented by a sample size of 118 respondents and 43 supervisors to participate in the study. The result found that the significant aspect to be included in Project-Based Learning is effective supervising skills. However, from the data, some supervisors have no proficiency skills of Project-Based Learning. Based on the empirical data which derived from the present study, a new framework for Project-Based Learning is suggested for the polytechnics system.

Abstract

The functionality and quality structure of a rating scale are vital in a survey instrument. This article discusses the underlying assumption of a rating scale and addresses the application of the Rasch Rating Scale Model (RSM) to diagnose the rating scale structure in a survey instrument. The instrument used to demonstrate the process of diagnosis a rating scale functioning in this study was the Vocational Teachers’ Assessment Literacy (VoTAL) instrument. The VoTAL instrument utilized the five-point Likert-type response format and consisted of 88 items representing three assessment literacy constructs. The data were obtained from 224 vocational teachers at five vocational colleges, which were randomly selected from the state of Selangor and the federal territory of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. The rating scale diagnosis results showed that the initial five steps of rating scale categories were not properly functioning as intended. It was found that the Andrich threshold of category three was disordered as it was not monotonically advance with categories. Additionally, the result also found that the width of the threshold between category three and category four was too narrow (0.66 logits). The results indicate that the rating scale used in the VoTAL instrument was disordered. Thus, it was suggested that the initial five rating step categories were collapsed down into four categories. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of assessing the rating scale’s functionality in a survey instrument to reduce measurement error and collect valid and reliable data.

Abstract

English:Taxonomy recently defined as the naming or classification of an idea or name, in terms of one discipline. However, there is a lack of regulation in the concept of vocational education. Based on Bloom, the taxonomy is built to determine the level of cognitive, affective, and psychomotor ability. Higher Vocational education (SMK) cannot fully use Bloom's Taxonomy. Vocational Taxonomy is dependent on the psychomotor theory which emphasizes aspects of physical movement. However, the purpose of this research is to determine the Vocational Taxonomy hierarchical structure for SMK N 1 Jeunib. The design of this research is a qualitative research which using the interview method to assess the perception of the Vocational teacher in terms of determining the Vocational Taxonomy. The sample chosen was SMKN 1 Jeunib, Bireun, Aceh, which selected 54 teachers from all departments. From the data, the respondents presented that they believed the Vocational Taxonomy is important in terms of learning and teaching. Then, the taxonomic function is very important and assisting in teaching and learning, aiding the curriculum preparation, and contributing the practical activities. However, the taxonomy function is important in the measurement and assessment of psychomotor activities. It was recommended that Vocational Taxonomy was important to apply. The research also stated that there was a need for a link between cognitive and psychomotor aspects.
