Abstract

This study aimed to describe the idiom usage in English, both its functions in sentences and the meaning. It also tries to describe the link between idioms and culture. The data are taken from Mc Graw Hill's Dictionary of American Idioms and Phrasal Verbs by Richard A. Spears, Ph.D and A Book of English Idioms by V.H. Collins. The finding shows that form of idioms are phrase, clause, and sentence. The phrase patterns are Animal Element (AE) + Noun, Adjective + Animal Element (AE), Verb + Animal Element (AE), Animal Element (AE) + Preposition, and Animal Element (AE) + Verb.  The idioms functions are as Verb, Adjective, and Noun. The study also finds a relation between idiom and culture.ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan penggunaan idiom di dalam bahasa Inggris, termasuk fungsi dalam kalimat dan artinya. Penelitian ini juga berusaha untuk menggambarkan hubungan antara idiom dan budaya setempat. Data diperoleh dari Mc Graw Hill's Dictionary of American Idioms and Phrasal Verbs karangan Richard A. Spears, Ph.D and A Book of English Idioms yang ditulis oleh V.H. Collins. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa idiom di dalam bahasa Inggris bisa berbentuk frase, klausa, dan kalimat. Pola frase Unsur Hewan + Kata Benda, Kata Sifat + unsur Hewan, Kata Kerja + Unsur Hewan, Unsur Hewan + Preposisi, dan Unsur Hewan + Kata Kerja. Idiom tersebut dapat berfungsi sebagai Kata Kerja, Kata Sifat, dan Kata Benda. Penelitian ini juga menunjukkan hubungan antara idiom dan budaya setempat. Kebudayann memberi pengaruh penggunaan idiom.Kata Kunci: Idiom, Hewan, Arti, Budaya

Abstract

Writing an English application letter is one of ‘Job Getting’ materials. The writing results can measure the students’ writing ability in English. This study aims to describe the writing quality of English application letter made by State Polytechnic of Balikpapan students. It also tries to explain frequent errors in the application letter. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The data obtained were assessed based on a scoring rubric adapted from Cohen (1994). There are four criteria assessed including Content, Organization, Grammar, and Mechanic. The data results are presented in the tables, graphs, and description. The results show (1) Most of the students' abilities are at Scale 4 and none has the ability at Scale 1. The average number of each component is Content 3,95; Organization 3,89; Grammar 3,38; and Mechanic 3,30. (2) Errors made in writing application letters can be found in all components. Most mistakes were made by students in all components, respectively, mechanic, grammar, organization, and content.

Abstract

The objective of the study is to find the realization of Adverb -ly in sentences. This study is descriptive qualitative which is carried out through the process of providing data, the data analysis stage, and the systematic stage of presenting the results of data analysis. In the data analysis stage, the data that has been collected is sorted according to their respective categories and given further descriptions and explanations. The result shows 1. The position of the adverb –ly can be placed in three positions, the beginning of the sentence (before the subject), the middle of the sentence (before the verb), and the end of the sentence (after the main clause). 2. Adverb –ly in a sentence can modify if it is in the form of a phrase, in the construction of comparative sentences, modifying 'however' to open a clause, modifying 'how' in an exclamation sentence, and modifying 'so' which is followed by the subject. and clauses. 3. Based on its semantic meaning the adverb -ly can have several meanings: point of view, as an emphasizer, as a maximiser, as a booster, as a minimizer, and as instrument. The research answers the realization of the adverb –ly can be in various places in English sentences, but the semantic meaning can be different. The present study implicates on adverbs having distinct semantic orientations, which provides natural reference materials for teaching and learning English in the EFL context.

Abstract

The objective of the study is to find the distribution of the suffixes in forming the verbs in English. Then, to find the equivalence for each suffix in Indonesian. The method used in writing is descriptive qualitative. Some ways are conducted in gaining the result such as providing data from Oxford Dictionary and then bilingual dictionary by John Echols and Hasan Shadily (2008) used as the guidance in translating the words. The analysis used is translational method. The results are (1) suffix {ize} has some equivalences to prefix {me-}, prefix {ber-}, affix {me-kan}, and affix {memper-kan}. (2) The equivalences of suffixx {-ify} are prefix {me-}, affix {memper-}, and affix {me-kan}. The third suffix {-ate} has some equivalences to prefix {me-}, affix {memper-}, affix {me-kan}, and affix {me-i}, then suffix {-en} will be prefix {me-}, affix {me-kan}, affix {me-i}, and affix {memper-}.
