Abstract

AbstractStudents of English Language Education Program in Faculty of Cultural Studies Universitas Brawijaya ideally master Grammar before taking the degree of Sarjana Pendidikan. However, the fact shows that they are still weak in Grammar especially tenses. Therefore, the researchers initiate to develop a video as a media to teach tenses. Objectively, by using video, students get better understanding on tenses so that they can communicate using English accurately and contextually. To develop the video, the researchers used ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). First, the researchers analyzed the students’ learning need to determine the product that would be developed, in this case was a movie about English tenses. Then, the researchers developed a video as the product. The product then was validated by media expert who validated attractiveness, typography, audio, image, and usefulness and content expert and validated by a content expert who validated the language aspects and tenses of English used by the actors in the video dealing with the grammar content, pronunciation, and fluency performed by the actors. The result of validation shows that the video developed was considered good. Theoretically, it is appropriate to be used English Grammar classes. However, the media expert suggests that it still needs some improvement for the next development especially dealing with the synchronization between lips movement and sound on the scenes while the content expert suggests that the Grammar content of the video should focus on one tense only to provide more detailed concept of the tense.

Abstract

In Extensive Reading class, students are often asked to present what they have read. However, when it comes for them to present the material, oral presentation seems to be a common choice.  When some students present their material, the rests wait for their turn. The uneasy atmosphere is created when they are waiting. Challenge is taken as how to create a good atmosphere in class. This challenge triggered the writers to conduct a small research on creating a lively Extensive Reading class by video presentation. The respondents of our research were 35 students who took the subject. Sensory preferences of four dimensions of learning style that are likely associated with L2 learning by Ehrman and Oxford (1990) become the basismethod of this research. In this method, students are asked to read and make summary on the reading materials in the form of video. Based on the questionnairres given, the students admitted that they were more interested to have video presentation than just a common oral presentation because the class is more lively and the students’ sensory preferences are developed.

Abstract

The present study aims to find out the dominant challenges experienced by 11th-grade students in writing short drama scripts of narrative text. One hundred six students were involved as research participants. The method used was quantitative descriptive with a questionnaire as the instrument consisting of 15 items about the students' challenges in writing short drama scripts. The questionnaire was distributed to the participants via WhatsApp group, and the teacher researcher asked them to submit it within 20 minutes after it was distributed. The researcher analyzed the participants' results of the questionnaire by using SPSS to find out the mean scores of each item. The mean scores gave information about which items on students' challenges were more dominant. The results show that the students do not experience the challenges of writing short drama scripts because of basic knowledge that the students already have. The willingness of students to read and practice several narrative texts helps increase the students' insight, the use of cooperative learning in class, as well as the readiness and sufficient background knowledge of the teacher to give to the students, are very helpful in developing and writing short drama scripts.

Abstract

For several years, the competence of students in Indonesia has always been recorded as very low. In PISA, Indonesia ranks at the 3rd or 4th lowest position, especially in Reading, Mathematics, and Science. This condition has, of course, raised the concerns of educators in Indonesia, and some schools then decided to implement an international curriculum along with the 2013 Curriculum. With the international curriculum, students are required to have very good literacy, to comprehend the texts and questions they work on. This also entails teaching them with teaching strategies which, besides developing their language competence, also enhance their critical thinking skills. This paper reports some ways in which EMI and CLIL can develop primary school students‟ English proficiency, literacy, and critical thinking skills. Data were taken from some Primary Schools which implement the synergy of national and international standard curricula, particularly from the scores of the students on two tests. Focus of the learning is given to the students’ English proficiency and literacy. The total numbers are 248 students from 14 primary schools located in most cities in East Java and some in South Celebes. The results show that the program equips the student with higher proficiency, literacy, and critical thinking skills. This study implies that EMI in CLIL context can accommodate primary school students’ literacy learning.
