Abstract

The advancement of ICT has resulted in the fast development of games industry by which teachers are creative to design the learning process and to utilize various kinds of gamifications. Gamification is a teaching method that uses game elements with the aim of motivating students to be directly involved in games and learning at the same time so that students get an interesting and enjoyable learning experience. Although many studies have been conducted related to the use gamification, the study on the use of gamification to improve tenses mastery regarded the students’ creativity is rarely found. This study was aimed to investigate whether: (1) gamification was more effective than conventional teaching method in enhancing tenses mastery of the second semester students of nursing diploma III; (2) the second semester students with high level of creativity had better tenses mastery than those with low level of creativity; and (3) there was an interaction effect between teaching methods and creativity on enhancing tenses mastery of the second semester students of nursing diploma III of faculty of health of Universitas Harapan Bangsa. The method which was employed in this research was an experimental research. The population of the research was the second semester students of nursing diploma III of faculty of health of Universitas Harapan Bangsa. Two classes were taken by using total sampling technique. The samples in this research were two classes; experimental class consisting of 30 students from 2A-1 and control class consisting of 30 students from 2A-2. The research instruments consisted of verbal creativity and tenses mastery test. The data were obtained from creativity and tenses mastery test. They were analysed in the terms of their frequency distribution, normality of the sample distribution, and the data homogeneity and then ANOVA test (Multifactor Analysis and Variance) and TUKEY test to test the research hypotheses. The result of the research findings leads to the conclusion that: (1) gamification is more effective than conventional teaching method to enhance tenses mastery of the second semester students; (2) the students having high creativity have better tenses mastery than those having low creativity; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching methods and creativity on enhancing tenses mastery.

Abstract

MALL has become an invaluable means in teaching writing for learners in and out of the classroom. Although there were many researches on MALL to enhance writing competence, analytical exposition text writing was never carried out. This study was aimed to investigate whether: (1) MALL was more effective than Flipped classroom to teach writing for the eleventh graders of SMA (senior high school); (2) the high creative students possessed better writing skills than the low creative ones; and (3) an interaction effect occurred between the methods of teaching and creativity to teach writing for the eleventh graders of SMA in Banyumas. The employed method was an experimental research with factorial design. The population of the research was the eleventh graders of SMA in Banyumas. Four schools were purposively taken. There were two samples in this research; experimental class comprising 72 students from SMAN 01 Banyumas and SMAN 01 Baturraden and control class containing 72 students from SMAN 03 Purwokerto and SMAN 01 Sokaraja. The occupied instruments in this research were verbal creativity and writing test. The data analyses were in the matter of frequency distribution, normality, homogeneity, ANOVA and TUKEY. The results of the study revealed that: (1) MALL is more effective than Flipped classroom in teaching writing for the eleventh graders of SMA; (2) the high creative students possessed better writing competence than the low creative students; and (3) an interaction effect happened between the methods of teaching and creativity in regards to writing teaching.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to: 1) describe the process of how HFA students learn descriptive texts in inclusive classes, 2) disclose the influencing factors of HFA students’ success in writing descriptive texts in inclusive classes, 3) examine the learning strategies used by the HFA students in writing descriptive texts in inclusive classes. A qualitative study was used as a method of this study. The participants of this study were four HFA students at the seventh grade of inclusive schools. This study was conducted in two schools in Junior High School of Yogyakarta and Purwokerto, Central Java. Interview, observation, and documentation were used to collect the data. Moreover, this study used data condensation, data display, conclusion drawing, or verification to analyze the data. The results generally showed that the pictures were employed by HFA students as inspiration to enhance their ability in writing descriptive texts. Involving them into fun activities could enhance social skill dealing with their social impairments. HFA students choose particular strategies to accomplish particular task. There are some crucial factors that determine the success of autistic students in writing English descriptive texts. They are internal factors and external factors. Internal factors cover: motivation 1) autistic students’ perception on learning strategies used, 3) learning experiences. Internal factors consist of: 1) environment; 2) teacher’s strategies; 4) role of special guidance teachers. In addition, two dominant strategies are used when learning English. They are memory strategies and cognitive strategies. The last, one of the factors that influence the students’ choice of learning strategies is teacher’s teaching strategies. Abstract

Speaking in English is often a frightening spectre for students since it is complex and involves all language elements. Self-confidence is one of the factors that influencing speaking performance. The students’ self-confidence can be stimulated by using an interesting activity that promotes practice in relax situation. The use of social media such as YouTube may be the alternative to train the students’ self-confidence in speaking English. This research was aimed to improve the students’ self-confidence in order to overcome their problem in Speaking English by utilizing YouTube as the media. In this research, the students were assigned to post their speaking assignments on YouTube. This research was a quasi-experimental one group with pre and post-test research that utilized 43 students from English for Nursing 1 Class as the sample who were taken by using random sampling. The research data were obtained from the students’ verbal scores and self-confidence questionnaire which were compared before and after the project. The result of this research showed that there was an increase on the students’ self-confidence and speaking performance after they joined this project. Moreover, paired t-test proved that the increase was significant. Thus, it can be concluded that utilizing YouTube as the media to post the students’ work is effective to increase the students’ self-confidence as well as their speaking performance. This project should be continued and developed to maintain the students’ self-confidence and facilitate more practice for students in speaking English.

Abstract

Grammar atau tata Bahasa merupakan dasar dari penguasaan sebuah Bahasa apapun. Tata Bahasa merupakan sekumpulan aturan yang mengatur struktur kata, frase, klausa, kalimat dan teks. Tata Bahasa merupakan salah satu masalah yang paling sering dihadapi oleh siswa. Banyak siswa mengganggap bahwa belajar tata Bahasa itu membosankan dan penuh dengan hafalan. Oleh karena itu, diadakanlah sebuah pelatihan singkat terkat tata Bahasa Inggris di kampus 1 Universitas Harapan Bangasa yang dihadiri oleh 110 siswa SMA dari berbagai sekolah di Jawa Tengah dan sekitarnya. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pengalaman belajar tata Bahasa yang menyenangkan melaui pembelajaran yang interaktif dan permainan. Kegiatan ini fokus pada penggunaan bentuk kata kerja dimana kata kerja dalam Bahasa Inggris terdapat beberapa jenis yaitu V1, V2, dan V3 dengan penggunaan yang berbeda-beda. Kata kerja merupakan inti dari sebuah kalimat. Memahami bentuk kata kerja menjadi dasar kemampuan menyusun kalimat yang baik dan benar. Setelah kegiatan ini, terdapat peningkatan yang signifikan pada pemahaman siswa dalam menggunakan kata kerja yang tepat dalam berbagai kalimat. Para siswa merasa puas dan menganggap pelatihan ini sangat bermanfaat. Selain itu, mereka juga berharap kedepannya akan diadakan pelatihan serupa dengan tips-tips menarik lainnya seputar Bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masayarakat ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi dampak program pelatihan public speaking terhadap siswa SMA di Kabupaten Banyumas dalam mengatasi glossophobia dan meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara di depan umum. Metode pengabdian melibatkan penyelenggaraan program pelatihan public speaking selama 2 hari di Kampus 2 Universitas Harapan Bangsa. Program ini mencakup teknik-teknik seperti visualisasi positif, latihan berulang, dan teknik relaksasi. Hasil pengabdian menunjukkan peningkatan yang signifikan dalam kemampuan berbicara di depan umum dan penurunan tingkat ketakutan berbicara di depan umum pada siswa yang mengikuti program pelatihan public speaking. Program pelatihan public speaking ini memiliki dampak positif yang signifikan pada siswa SMA di Kabupaten Banyumas. Mereka menjadi lebih percaya diri dalam berbicara di depan umum, mengatasi glossophobia, dan meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris mereka. Dampak ini tidak hanya memengaruhi aspek akademis, tetapi juga mempersiapkan mereka untuk sukses dalam karir dan kehidupan sosial. Selain itu, program ini memberikan kontribusi positif dalam pembangunan generasi muda yang lebih percaya diri dan komunikatif dalam masyarakat.
