Abstract

The study aims at finding the problems encountered by the students in listening comprehension.  Descriptive method was used to analyze and to find the solution about the problems. The research was conducted in State Islamic University of Alauddin Makassar. The population of this study was second semester students of English Education Department of Tarbiyah and Teacher training Faculty Academic year 2016/2017. There were 37 students as the subject in this study.  Data were gathered by questionnaire and interview while observation during listening was used to confirm students’ answer. The result of analyzing students’ difficulties toward listening comprehension showed that listening is very difficult skill for students who study foreign language. It was based on three factors influencing their listening; they were listening material, listener factor, and physical setting. Therefore, accents, pronunciation, speed of speech, insufficient vocabulary, different accent of the speakers, lack of concentration, and bad quality of recording were the major problems encountered by students’ English Education Department. Understanding students’ difficulties enable the lecturer to help the students developing the effective learning strategies and ultimately improve their listening. Solutions to overcome the problems were:  the teacher should adapt and improve listening material, activate students’ vocabulary, give the students variety of accent while practice listening in language laboratory, improve their pronunciation by training from native speakers, building students’ knowledge about the topic, give some strategy in listening, and always motivate students. The solutions were made as a suggestion for the lecturers.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the students’ problems using Aegisub to make subtitle of English-Indonesian movie. Qualitative approach was used to describe the students’ problems faced during translating English into Indonesian languange (Bahasa). There were 16 students became the reprentative subjects. The data were collected through interview then it analyzed into 4 steps; they were coding, reducing, presenting, and concluding the data. The findings indicated that the students faced technical and linguistic problems. Technical problems were consisted of timing, typesetting, and iconifying. Linguistic problems related to the diction choices, equivalence, and translation strategies that the students used to deliver the meaning of the subtitle to the viewers. Thus, the students’ problems in making subtitle using Aegisub application were technical and linguistic problems.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the present situation needs of English and the target situation needs of English for Islamic Economics department students at UIN Alauddin Makassar. The research design used in this study was survey method, the data were obtained  from the students’ need. This study involved 59 respondents which consists of 52 students of the 2nd semester batch 2019, 2 lecturers, 1 expert and 4 graduates, from Islamic Economics department at UIN Alauddin Makassar. In collecting the data, the instrument was used  the questionnaire for students, graduates, lecturers, expert, and used interview. The collection of the data was done by distributing the questionnaires to the participants to identify the students’ need in Islamic Economics and interview guideline to find additional data. The researcher involved four activities; observing English teaching and learning process, giving questionnaires, analyzing and describing the obtained data, and calculating the percentage of questionnaires. The findings revealed of this research showed the students present and target situation needs. First, Present situation analysis consisted of  level ability, English skill and component, topic, then problem in learning English. Level ability needed by the students was reading. English skills and component needed most by the students was grammar. The topics  that students needed was alms. Meanwhile, most of the problem that students have based on questionnaires was the students lack of learning strategies in English. Second, target situation analysis consisted of learning preference and learning purposes. Learning preference that was needed the most by students was using film or video in learning process. Furthermore, learning purposes that was mostly chosen by students was future career in learning English.

Abstract

English material that is used in the school is too general. It is also already not reflecting Islam itself. To maintain students’ identity as Muslim, this paper is aimed to integrate Islamic Values into English material especially in basic competences 3.12 and 4.12 about Announcement and Notice for the eighth-grade students at MTs Madani Pao-Pao based on 2013 curriculum. The research design used in this study was Research and Development (R & D). The development model used was ADDIE   model. It consists of need analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation.  The procedures included analyzing materials needed by spreading questionnaire to the students and analyzing the basic competences used, designing a blueprint of materials, and developing the English materials through ADDIE model. In this research, the expert was involved in order to validate the product. There were two systematic aspects the product that they validated: the aspect of the content/material and aspect of learning.  Therefore, the result indicated that based on experts’ judgment as well as product development result, the developed basic competences 3.12 and 4.12 was applicable to be taught at the eighth-grade students of Junior High School as topics in English.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the students' problems in the listening section of TOEFL in English Education Department of UIN Alauddin Makassar. This study was qualitative research. The Research subjects were 12 students who had undertaken TOEFL test from English Education Department of UIN Alauddin Makassar. The instrument was an interview guideline. The data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman analysis. This research indicated that the students encountered three problems in the listening section of TOEFL. The first problem was listening to material such as unfamiliar words, grammar structure, vocabulary, pronunciation, speech speed, and long-spoken text. The second was the listener's personal problems, such as feeling worried, losing concentration, unclear pronunciation, and encountering an unknown word. The third was the environmental situation, such as the noise around and the low quality of the recording.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the students’ perception of using Jeopardy strategy in teaching vocabulary. This research used quantitative method. The respondents were 348 students of PIBA Program who were willing to fill out the distributed questionnaire through G-form. The instrument was closed-end and opened-end questionnaires. The data were analyzed quantitatively by interpreting percentages. The results indicated that the students perceive Jeopardy Strategy as an effective way to improve their English vocabulary. Most of the students Strongly Agreed that this strategy was interesting. However, the students sometimes prioritized gaining high scores over understanding the meaning and definition of the new words. Therefore, it is recommended to use Jeopardy strategy in teaching vocabulary by focusing students’ attention on the new words.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the effect of Flashcards media to increase vocabulary size for the second grade students at Mts Madani Alauddin. This research was conducted at Mts Madani Alauddin Regency in academic year 2021/2022. The researcher used the instrument to collect data Vocabulary Size Test and Vocabulary Level Test (VLT). This research used quantitative data applied a pre-test and post-test group design, in this research the population were 145 students of the second grade at Mts Madani Alauddin. The sample were 20 students of Class VIII A as an experimental class using the pre-experimental design method, type one group pretest-posttest (single group initial test). The research findings showed that the second grade of students at Mts Madani Alauddin obtained scores on the pre-test with a mean score of 50.5, which was classified as very poor. After giving treatment, they obtained a score with a mean score of 65.5, which was classified as fair. It means that there was a significant increase in students’ vocabulary size using Flashcard media it was supported by the results of the one-sample T-Test where sig. (2-tailed) 0.001 < 0.05 has an effect in increasing students’ vocabulary. Therefore Ho is rejected and H1 is accepted, apart from that the results of the vocabulary level test showed that the average student got a fair score. The result of the data analysis indicated that there was the improvement in the students’ vocabulary size after being taught using Flashcard media.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the students’ vocabulary size taught by using Learn English with TV Series as a learning medium. The research method used in this research was pre-experimental with a pre-test and post-test group design. The sample was the class XII MIPA at SMAN 2 Maros consisting of 30 students selected using probability sampling with a simple random sampling technique. The instrument used were a multiple-choice, true-false item, matching test, and vocabulary level test. The collected data was then analyzed using SPSS. The result indicated that the average score of the post-test (90.40) was higher than the pre-test (49.97). It was supported by the one-sample T-Test where Sig. (2-tailed) 0.000 < 0.05, which had a good and significant effect on students. The result of the vocabulary level test also indicated that the students at level 2000. Therefore, the students’ vocabulary size was increased using Learn English with TV Series YouTube Channel at SMAN 2 Maros.

Abstract

This study aims to determine students’ needs in learning materials by integrating Islamic values into English. This study used quantitative method. The participants were eighth-grade students, consisting of 29 students. This study employed a close-ended questionnaire divided into three sections: organization of the learning material, learning content, and learners' characteristics. Data were analyzed using quantitative data analysis techniques. The results indicated that there are three characteristics of the students' needs. They were the organization materials, the content materials, and learners’ characteristics. In the organization materials, most of the students needed the instructional objectives in English learning materials. Regarding the content materials, the students wanted the virtue of studying, helping parents, and environment as learning topics by integrating them with Islamic values. For the learners’ learning characteristics, they preferred the visual learning style.
