Abstract

In the last 15 years, especially in Makassar, there was a tendency for private and public activities at coffee shops. This study aims to reveal the practices and power relations that shape the reality of the public space of coffee shops in Makassar, both as public space and as a public sphere by using ethnographic methods and cultural studies analysis approach. The primary data collection was carried out through participant observation and in-depth interviews, while secondary data through note-taking techniques and photo documentation. The results showed that mass media had a significant role in shaping the reality of coffee shops. Strategic coalitions between coffee shop owners, radio stations (such as Mercurius FM and Fajar FM) and coffee connoisseurs have an impact on the commodification of public spaces in coffee shops. Print media such as Fajar and Tribun Timur also contribute in constructing reality with its own framing to obtain "news value that sells". Therefore, coffee shops in Makassar are not merely becoming spaces of (social) politics, but are also politicized through the politics of space for the benefit of each party.

Abstract

The walls of Hindu and Buddhist temples in Java are often found in the carved ornament of lotus plants that is grown from tubers or urns. In early period of Islam in Java, the existence of this decorative variety remained. Based on the books of the Hindu Purana, there is an explanation of the concept of the the universe creations embodied in the form of lotus scrolls. Meanwhile, from the old manuscripts belonging to the Wali, although limited in the scope of Sufism of the Tarekat Syaththariyah there is an explanation of the lotus with the name of the Tunjung flower. This article discusses the concept of creating works of art based on the theory of adaptation by Linda Hutcheon in his book: A Theory of Adaptation. The discussion is more emphasized on the visual aesthetic aspects contained in Lara Jonggrang Prambanan temple in Kalasan Yogyakarta, Surowono Temple in Kediri East Java and Sunan Drajat tomb in Lamongan, East Java. The ornamental variety, whose concept of creation was adapted from Purana books of Hindu, was in early Islam believed to follow the theoretical procedures, as well as in later times, but the philosophical meaning may be less well known.

Among the most complained of congestion, eroticism, rah-rah in the streets, to conflicts with road users, residents, or fellow escort. Therefore, the indigenous consisting of Sasak nobility and religious leaders raises the discourse of banning nyongkolan using kecimol with the pretext of not according to custom, deviate from the teachings of Islam, and suggests the use of gendang beleq as a distinctive art area that became hereditary heritage. The problems arising from the ban led to contestation between the Sasak elite and the supporters of the kecimol group. How meeting point of negotiation between the repressing parties and the parties who are in the implementation of the Sasak Lombok nyongkolan tradition is studied with the perspective of Bourdieu’s social practice. Abstract

This article discusses the cultural village transformation into a tourism village in Bejiharjo, a rural tourism destination in Indonesia. Based on the Actor-Network Theory, Bejiharjo is a space formed in a dynamic network of relationships between actors, both human and non-human actors. Using online media observation, semi-structured interviews, and direct observation, the complexity of the relations between actors in the transformation of rural development that causes aestheticisation, consumerism, translation, place-making, touristification, and cosmopolitanism in Bejiharjo is explored. The findings of this study reveal that, at first, the cultural scapes ordering of Bejiharjo should conserve local cultural values. Then, government regulations on tourism development emerged and encouraged the development of rural areas with the concept of a tourism village. This dynamic and interrelated process triggers competition between individual and group interests and causes chronic conflicts in Bejiharjo.

The problem arose when Sultan HB X did not have a son, and some parties interpreted the special law and regional regulations requiring that the governor of Yogyakarta be held, male. This problem has attracted the national media to produce news texts related to the pros and cons of women leaders in Yogyakarta. This research intends to uncover how the national media of Kompas daily constructs discourses on the rejection of female leaders and how the struggle for public acceptance or ideological ideas related to leadership succession in Yogyakarta. With a qualitative approach, the method used in this study is Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis model. Abstract

One of the most important components in a film or animated series apart from the story is the character. The main characters who drive the plot generally are the main focus and also naturally became fans’ favorite character. In several series it is not uncommon to find fans who prefer second lead characters. Why does it happen? There’s not a lot of research regarding the topic of fan receptions to various characters that has been conducted before and it is very interesting and important to be studied. Understanding fans' reception of characters can be understood by means of cognitive narratology approach with ‘categorization and personalization’ theory by Schneider. Murray Smith's ‘structure of sympathy’ theory is also used to further look at the engagement level of fans to their favorite characters. This research is focusing on characters from shounen anime series which have second lead characters that are more popular than the main characters. From this study, identified six categories in fans reception which are personality, character development, goals, design / audio-visual, relationships between characters and emotions. Not only understanding relationships between the characters and emotion, fans also closely following and evaluating the actions that the characters did throughout the story, these factors will also have an effect later on the fans' sense and level of engagement to the characters. Keywords: character; fans reception; engagement; anime

Abstract

Collaboration between democracy and monarchy occurs in government systems in several countries. What happened in Yogyakarta was a monarchy system that originated from the Islamic Mataram kingdom, which was later recognized as a political institution that held executive power in the democratic system of the Indonesian state. The King of Yogyakarta acts as the holder of executive power (Governor) in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. With the method of literature review and theoretical elaboration, this paper seeks to explore how the history of monarchy in Yogyakarta can collaborate and operate in the democratic system in Indonesia. This paper also looks at and analyzes how the development of the Yogyakarta Palace and Sultan Hamengku Buwono, who played the role of King and then at the same time held the position of Governor of the Special Region of Yogyakarta. From the analysis, it is found that Yogyakarta is an Islamic kingdom that later joined the Indonesian state as one of the provinces with a special status. The current position of the Special Region of Yogyakarta is a "prison" for Sultan Hamengkubuwono. As a King, the Sultan is always supervised by the regional people's representative council in the implementation of regional governance. The King of Yogyakarta, who appears to have dual powers as a King as well as a Governor, is, in fact, nothing more than prisoners imprisoned within the palace walls under the strict supervision of the representative council and the central government
