Abstract

Abstract The use of address terms is an important and interesting sociolinguistic aspect to be studied. In Australian contexts, there are a number of address terms existing in daily interaction. This case study focuses on how address terms are used by Australians; specifically, 1) how often Australians use the address terms mate, babe, dude, love, buddy, darling, sweetie, and honey/hon in their everyday communication, 2) to whom they mostly use the terms towards, and 3) who is more likely to use the terms between male and female. In this study, the main data collection is survey, with the questionnaires distributed to local Australians around the area of Monash University, Melbourne. The findings suggest that from the eight address terms studied, the most frequently used one in daily interaction is mate, followed by love and dude. Next, those address terms are found to be used for various specific people depending on the closeness of relationships to the speaker. In addition, some terms are usable to address both sexes, while some can be used for certain sex only. Finally, for the speaker of those address terms, mate, buddy, and dude are more popular to use among male participants, while darling, sweetie, honey, babe, and love are more popular among female speakers. The findings in this sociolinguistic study confirm the use of address terms link to feelings and solidarity as suggested by the theory.

Abstract

Student awareness, attitude, affordances, and challenges in online autonomous English language learningAutonomy in self-regulated learning using various online modes has currently become the norm in English language teaching and learning. This research aims to address student awareness and attitude towards autonomous language learning and their affordances and challenges as a part of such learning. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on English language students of a renowned private university in Malang, Indonesia. The findings suggest that student awareness on the importance of autonomy in language learning was very high. In general, their attitude towards autonomous learning was positive. They also reported that autonomous learning, especially those conducted in informal online settings were enjoyable and educative. However, some practical challenges were identified. The foci of the survey in the study were on the student affordances and challenges during autonomous language learning. Our data showed that student affordances include a number of technical aspects, learning resources, and learning management, while the challenges consist of technical and learning management aspects. We then proposed relevant activities to support students’ autonomous learning. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to report the best practices in online grammar learning through the polysynchronous learning model, as well as to explore students' perceptions of such learning model. This study is a descriptive case study covering the design of an online course carried out during the Covid-19 pandemic as the research object. The data processed were in the form of teacher reflections, documents of teaching materials and activities in the Learning Management System (LMS), and an open survey to explore students’ perceptions. The findings from this study indicate that the online grammar learning carried out had sufficient relevance to the concept of polysynchronous learning, which is considered appropriate to be implemented during and after the Covid-19 pandemic. For students' perceptions, in general, they expressed appreciation for the learning process, especially in terms of the personal touch and the teaching style carried out by the teacher, the learning activities, and the teaching materials. Furthermore, some constructive suggestions were also given by students, for example, in the area of overcoming technical problems and learning management. The practices presented in this paper are expected to be useful for other foreign language teachers and lecturers as a form of collective sharing to face the challenges of the online grammar learning process during and after the pandemic.
