Abstract

In an international communication context, English becomes an International language , commonly known as English as an International Language (EIL). EIL sees various English accents equally because intelligibility, being able to deliver message clearly to listeners, is the main goal in a communication. Therefore, Indonesian EFL (English as a foreign language) students need to focus their English mastery on intelligibility over native-likeness accent when learning English. However, whether or not the students concentrate their English learning more on intelligibility is still unknown yet. To identify which aspects EFL students focus on, the research examined Indonesian EFL students’ attitudes toward their L1-accented English. The main aim is to enhance their awareness that intelligibility is the key component in an English communication. Also, English teachers hopefully discuss the intelligibility in their teaching. Thus, the targeted learning results, particularly related to speaking skills development, are more reachable so the students are more encouraged to develop their English. The study involved 46 students (14 males and 32 females) from University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), East Java. The implemented instrument as a data collection is a questionnaire. The collected data were organized and then analyzed to find out EFL students’ attitudes perceiving their Indonesian-accented English. The researcher figured out that EFL students had less positive attitude towards their own English accent. That perception might be caused by their low linguistic awareness, excessive exposure to the Internet (YouTube, International news) made by native speakers of English. The result of data analysis will be elaborated to interweave the investigation outcomes with classroom context so the outcomes could be implemented in classroom instruction. Keywords: Accent, Intelligibility, EIL and attitude.

Abstract

Student awareness, attitude, affordances, and challenges in online autonomous English language learningAutonomy in self-regulated learning using various online modes has currently become the norm in English language teaching and learning. This research aims to address student awareness and attitude towards autonomous language learning and their affordances and challenges as a part of such learning. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on English language students of a renowned private university in Malang, Indonesia. The findings suggest that student awareness on the importance of autonomy in language learning was very high. In general, their attitude towards autonomous learning was positive. They also reported that autonomous learning, especially those conducted in informal online settings were enjoyable and educative. However, some practical challenges were identified. The foci of the survey in the study were on the student affordances and challenges during autonomous language learning. Our data showed that student affordances include a number of technical aspects, learning resources, and learning management, while the challenges consist of technical and learning management aspects. We then proposed relevant activities to support students’ autonomous learning. Abstract

Recently, procrastination has become one of the crucial problems for many students. This can affect the learning outcomes. Responding to that issue, this study was conducted to investigate procrastinating behavior encountered by the English Department students during their Academic Writing task completion. It investigates (1) the factors contributing to students’ procrastination in completing their tasks, and (2) the effects of students' procrastination on their achievement. Qualitative research design was applied. Thirty EFL learners of English Language Education Department in one of Indonesian private university participated in this research. To collect the data, questionnaire was used in the form of closed-ended and open-ended questions. From the collected data, it was found out that the students' procrastination was influenced by two major factors; internal and external. The internal factors include perfectionism, self-regulation failure, low self-efficacy, sensation seeking, lack of motivation and laziness. Meanwhile, the external factors include family background, social environment, task characteristic, distraction, another task completion, and device. In addition, procrastination has caused several effects for the students; they are health issues, decreasing productivity, losing opportunities, self-regret, losing self-confidence and a fear of getting a low score. The pedagogical implications of the research findings are further elaborated and recommendations for future work are highlighted as well.
