Abstract

If we examine the process of implementing character education in Indonesia, it has actually been implemented for a long time, one of the educational institutions that has always been and is still considered to instill character education is Islamic boarding school. Pesantren education was originally an Islamic religious education which began with the emergence of Islamic society in the archipelago in the 13th century. Several centuries later the organization of this education became more regular with the emergence of places of study. This form then developed with the establishment of places to stay for students (santri), which were then called pesantren. Although the form was still very simple, at that time pesantren education was the only structured educational institution, so this education was very prestigious. It is in this institution that Indonesian Muslims study the basic doctrines of Islam, particularly concerning the practice of religious life. Abstrak Jika kita menelaah proses penerapan pendidikan karakter di Indonesia sebetulnya telah diterapkan sejak lama, salah satu lembaga pendidikan yang sejak dulu dan hingga saat ini yang masih dianggap menanamkan pendidikan karakter adalah pondok pesantren. Pendidikan pesantren semula merupakan pendidikan agama Islam yang dimulai sejak munculnya masyarakat Islam di nusantara pada abad ke-13. Beberapa abad kemudian penyelenggaraan pendidikan ini semakin teratur dengan munculnya tempat-tempat pengajian. Bentuk ini kemudian berkembang dengan pendirian tempat-tempat menginapbagi para pelajar (santri), yang kemudian disebut pesantren. Meskipun bentuknya masih sangat sederhana, pada waktu itu pendidikan pesantren merupakan satu-satunya lembaga pendidikan yang terstruktur, sehingga pendidikan ini sangat bergengsi. Di lembaga inilah kaum muslimin Indonesia mendalami doktrin dasar Islam, khususnya menyangkut praktek kehidupan beragama.
