Abstract

The Industrial Revolution 4.0, the Covid-19 Pandemic, and the Society 5.0 are global phenomena that are driving social change towards a new era of the world society. Hindus also have to carry out adaptation strategies, both at the structural and cultural level in order to enter this new era. Sociological reflections on Hindu adaptation strategies are expressed through the phenomenological method which emphasizes the individual agency dimension and its integration with structural dynamics. The ability of Hindus to exercise control dialectics on the acceleration of information technology, ideological regulation and socio-cultural structures change in the new era is a determinant of success in their adaptation strategy.

Abstract

The tradition of reading, singing, and interpreting religious literary texts gave birth to a didactic method called dharmagita. However, the implementation of the dharmagita tends to prioritize the aesthetic dimension, rather than the didactic dimension, so that it has the potential to hinder the transformation of religious texts in the context of religiosity. This article aims to reveal the semiotics of dharmagita as a strategic transformation of religious texts in the context of modern society. The study was conducted using a qualitative method based on a sociology of literature approach. The results of the study show that modernization affects traditional values so that adaptation strategies are needed so that people are able to follow changes without losing moral and spiritual control. Dharmagita has a transformative role to enlighten society with values in religious texts that are relevant to modern culture. In this context, improving the semiotic skills of dharmagita activists has an important role to optimize their ability to understand, interpret, and contextualize religious literary texts in actual-practical life.

Abstract

The success of a country's development and progress is almost entirely measured according to the categories constructed by the West. The stratification of developed and developing countries has become a discourse that strengthens the hegemony of the West over non-Western countries. This classification has ignored the cultural reality that every nation has its view of the success of development by the goals and ideals of its own life. For Eastern people, material progress is not the only measure for the success of development because they have a more essential orientation, namely the happiness of the soul. Balinese people also believe that the purpose of human life is to achieve material well-being (jagadhita) as well as spiritual happiness (moksa) integrally. This means that development must be carried out holistically to realize these goals. Through a literature review of the Purana Bali, six important concepts for holistic and sustainable development of Bali were found, namely Sad Kertih which includes Atma Kertih, Jana Kertih, Jagat Kertih, Danu Kertih, Samudra Kertih, and Wana Kertih. These six concepts are correlated with the Tri Hita Karana (three causes of happiness) including parhyangan, pawongan, and palemahan. Sad Kertih became one of the sociocultural and local geniuses of the Balinese people to face Western hegemony in development, as well as to realize the harmony of civilization.

Abstract

Puja Tri Sandhya is Hindus prayer known in all countries. The original prayer came in Sanskrit language, but every Hindus believer already translate the prayer into their native language. In 1950, Balinese Hindus used Puja Tri Sandhya to get the recognition from the government allowing Parisada Hindu Dharma Indonesia (PHDI)—the major reform movement and Hindus organization in Indonesia—to translate Puja Tri Sandhya into Indonesian. This translation aimed to make every Hindus believer in Indonesia knows about the meaning of the mantras. Besides Indonesian, Puja Tri Sandhya is also translated into the universal language that 20 percent of the world spoke, English. English is believed to give the best medium to other people who want to learn more about Hindus or simply just curious. As a reminder, in this paper Indonesian will be the source language (SL) and English will be the result of the translation so we shall call it target language (TL). In translation, equivalency will be the point to show if the translation is well translated or not. In their book The Theory and Practice of Translation (1959), Nida and Taber state two kinds of equivalency that the translator can use as their reference they are: formal and dynamic equivalence. Here, Puja Tri Sandhya in Indonesian and English versions will be analyzed using 2 kinds of equivalences by Nida and Taber.

Abstract

Abstract

Putru Pasaji keeps a wealth of knowledge and wisdom of the archipelago's ancestors, especially regarding Hindu eschatology. The eschatological discourse in this text interrelates with other discourses, including morality. The construction of moral discourse in Putru Pasaji is studied using discourse theory with a constructivist approach. Moral discourse has an important position in Putru Pasaji because it is related to the pitara's life after death. Heaven and hell are determined by the results of the actions and the moral quality of the pitara during his lifetime. The moral teachings in Shiva-Buddha construct moral discourse in its eschatological interrelations in a holistic and integral manner
