Abstract

Proofs are the key component in mathematics and mathematics learning. But in reality, there are still many students who make errors when constructing mathematical proofs. Therefore this study aimed to identify common errors when the students are constructing mathematical proofs. The participant  of this study was 51 of 3rd year students of Mathematics Education Department  who enrolled in Real Analysis course in the second semester of the 2017/2018 academic year. The data of the study were obtained by conducting a test consisting of five questions and interview guidelines. The errors identified in this study were (1) proving general statements using specific examples, (2) inappropriate algebraic manipulation in mathematical induction, (3) incorrect reasoning and assumptions in proving with contradictions, and (4) reasoning errors involving natural numbers in mathematical induction. Hence, further study can be developed learning models that promote the conceptual understanding, logical reasoning, and mastery of mathematical proof techniques.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of flipped classroom learning with a realistic mathematics approach to promote students' mathematical literacy. This research was a quasi-experimental study using posttest only non-equivalent control group design. The population of this research was all students of 10th grade in one of public senior higher school in Kendari, Indonesia. Two classes were chosen by purposive sampling as the samples of this study that is X-MIPA 1 as the experimental class and X-MIPA 2 as the control class. The instruments used in this study were a mathematical literacy test. The results of this study show that the flipped classroom learning with a realistic mathematics approach is effective to promote the achievement of students' mathematical literacy.

Abstract

Creative problem-solving learning model to promote higher-order thinking skills based on the level of mathematical dispositionAbstractThis study aims to describe the effect of the creative problem-solving model on higher-order thinking skills in terms of students' mathematical disposition levels. This research was a quasi-experimental study using a posttest only non-equivalent control group design. The population of this research was all students of 11th grade in one of public senior higher school in Kendari, Indonesia. Two classes were chosen by purposive sampling as the samples of this study that is XI-MIPA 1 as the experimental class and XI-MIPA 3 as the control class. The instruments used in this study were a higher-order thinking skills test and a mathematical disposition questionnaire. The results of this study show that the mean of higher-order thinking skills of students who studied with creative problem-solving models was better than students who studied with a scientific approach, while from the level of mathematical disposition, students with higher-level mathematical dispositions have better mean higher-order thinking skills than students with moderate and low disposition level. However, there is no effect of interaction between learning models and the level of mathematical disposition to the average higher-order thinking skills of students.
