Abstract

The objectives of this research are 1) to describe the frequencies of rhetorical modes of apologies in academic texts written by EFL university students, and 2) to find out problems that they face when constructing rhetorical modes of apologies through exposition, narration, description and argumentation genres of writing. Using documents and interviews, this qualitative research mainly deals with the purposive sampling technique, data reduction, and display concerning rhetorical modes of apologies and problems on constructing them. The research results show that the interpretation of students' rhetorical expressions is meta-pragmatic based on interactions, linguistic nuances, and rhetorical meanings. Rhetorical modes of apologies influence the language production, contextual expressions, and dissemination of messages to audiences or readers. The language used in the rhetorical modes of apologies is integrally connected to one's identity, personality, and situation. Therefore, several efforts are made to see how linguistic differences in a series of interactions lead to denials, avoidance of responsibility, reduction of offensiveness, corrective action, and mortification. The interview results outline that rhetorical modes of apologies function as an integral part of interests, utilities, and moral values instead of some problems the students faced while writing the academic texts.

Abstract

English as a foreign language (EFL) university students use reflective journals as learning logs to express or capture their ideas within a scientific conceptual framework. The objectives of this research are to (1) describe the power of reflective journal writing in communicating ideas, and (2) identify the aspects of reflective journal writing that aid learning in an EFL context. The reflective journals were written by 21 EFL university students. This research takes a qualitative approach, with the primary data coming from several reflective journals (N=124) while the secondary data coming from EFL students’ interviews (N=15). The research results showed that reflective journals were useful for students to make critical reflections and self-discovery responses to writing topics. The students learned to focus on writing components such as order, unity, coherence, cohesiveness, content, and organization of ideas through reflective journal writing. The students’ perspectives on aspects of reflective journal writing were primarily concerned with macro-and micro-level linguistic issues, as evidenced from the interview results. Writing a reflective journal necessitated their ability to reformulate thoughts, provide details, and solve problems. Furthermore, critical thinking, metacognitive skills, and self-reflections became increasingly important in helping the students to develop their ability to write reflective journals.

Abstract

East Java’s folklore has inherited character education values from generation to generation because they align with relics of the Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms. This research identifies and describes character education values in East Java’s folklore. The data was gathered by critically reading the entire discourse and dialogue in the folklore texts, allowing indigenous values to be explored. Then, a content analysis was used to analyze the data concerning such values, which was classified/grouped further in line with Komensky's theories concerning the types and theme of character education values. The findings revealed that the themes of East Java’s folklore deal with not only positive character education values but also those that deviate from the models of core values, such as (1) gambling and slander in the Cindelaras story and the Banyuwangi origin story (2) crime based on envy in the Golden Conch Story, (3) coercion of will in the story of Origins of Reog Ponorogo, (4) human sacrifice offerings in the stories of Rara Anteng and Joko Seger, and (5) fear-filled environment causes chaos in Joko Dolog's tale. The importance of character education in East Java’s folklore requires teaching resources for character education integrated into various subjects, mainly studying the Indonesian language and literature. Nevertheless, before using it as a teaching tool, educators must weigh the benefits and drawbacks for their students' positive development. The importance of moral education concerning good and evil, quality, social education, and cooperation are other educational ideals that merit consideration. This evidence shows how incorporating folklore into literary works is presented through a straightforward story framework rich in moral values.
