Abstract

The impact of the corona virus makes it difficult for teachers and students to adjust learning. The purpose of this study is to analyze as well to investigate the phenomenon of teaching English online amidst the re-emerging pandemic situation forcing the teaching learning process to be re-implemented online. The subjects were 10 cross-level English teachers situated in Java and Sumatra. Qualitative approach utilizing semi-structured interview method in obtaining the necessary data was chosen as the best method and approach in the study. The participants mainly agreed with the online learning system, though they faced challenges like limited subsidiary quotas, students' poor conditions, students' misbehavior and lack of better equipments. Besides various approaches and solutions in facing the challenges, it was also known that writing was considered the most challenging to teach among the four basic skills. The implication of this study endeavor the insights on tackling down the challenges of teaching amidst a pandemic. Synergy among so many elements like cross-level teachers, students, parents and policy makers was badly demanded to make the progress of online learning comes to betterment.

Abstract

Considering the intense presentation activity in the graduate classroom, the use of suggestion turns to be primary in delivering points. This triggered the researchers to study the issue. The primary objective of this study is to explain the relation between Flor’s (2005) suggestion taxonomy and Trosborg’s (1995) suggestion modification through the realization of speech acts of suggestion. The study applied a descriptive qualitative research method in which the data were gathered by using Oral Discourse Completion Task (ODCT). The participants of the study were 15 EFL students of a graduate program of a university in Semarang. The responses then were analyzed based on Flor’s (2005) suggestion taxonomy and Trosborg’s (1995) suggestion modification coding scheme. The results revealed that there were 146 suggestions produced. Conventionalized forms were realized more frequently than other Flor’s taxonomies. Furthermore, negative imperative was the most used indirect strategy. The subjects realized more specific formulae of the most in conventionalized forms. The indirect strategy was realized equally. Politeness marker was used more frequently while grounder claimed the highest findings in external modification. The relation between the taxonomy and modification showed that direct taxonomy and external modification was the highest relation found in the suggestion realization. It is expected that this research can give profound contributions to university students, English teachers, and other fellow researchers to develop further research related to suggestion speech acts. At last, it is suggested that English teachers particularly are to raise EFL learners’ pragmatic awareness by implementing appropriate teaching approach and method.

Abstract

This paper discussed the translation errors in various top brands of instant noodles in Indonesia, ranging from the products produced by the local industries to the one imported from overseas. In this research, the researchers used a descriptive qualitative research method. The sources of data mean for the objects of the research were ten cooking instructions or procedures of various brands of instant noodles in Indonesia, translated from Indonesian into English. The data were collected through documentation techniques. The types of data were words, phrases, and sentences. The data were classified and tabulated based on the error types, following the standard of ATA’s Framework for Standard Error Making Classification. The result of the analysis showed that there were 40 translation errors found in 10 of 23 error categories with Omission as the most frequent error produced. The three most prominent error categories found in the instant noodles’ cooking instructions are Omission, Mistranslation, Syntax, and Cohesion. Omission turns to be the highest category of translation errors, which appeared 13 times out of 40 errors or 32.5 % of errors found in the analysis, followed by Mistranslation with 15% and Syntax and Cohesion that shares the same percentage of findings by reaching 12.5%. The researchers also found out that out of 10 instant noodles brands, instant noodle brand D has the most translation errors with 9 error findings out of 40 errors in total, followed by brand J with 8 findings of errors.
