Abstract

Purwoceng sustainability is done in order to optimize its sustainable use. Therefore it is necessary to planting Purwoceng in a controlled and planned manner. Hydroponics is one of the alternative cultivation techniques for crop production without using soil, so it can be done in areas that are difficult to cultivate. Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) is one of the hydroponic techniques of water culture. The nutrients and water are administered to the plant in a circular in a shallow layer. NFT provides proper environmental control of root areas, as well as efficient water and plant nutrients. This study aims to obtain growth and development of medicinal plants Purwoceng NFT. The study was conducted from May to July 2017. The research location of Dieng Kulon at an altitude of 2.000 m asl. The Purwoceng plant was planted with NFT technique within 5 replications. The measurement results are shown in graphical. Indicators of nutritional adequacy using EC (Electrict Conductivity) and pH. EC nutrient used is 1-1.5 mS / cm for purwoceng 1-30 HST, 1.5-2 mS / cm for plants > 30 HST, pH used 5.5-6.5. The results showed that average growth of Purwoceng plants until the age of 50 HST reaches 7-9 cm. The number of branches of Purwoceng plants up to the age of 50 HST reaches 2-4 branches. The percentage of Purwoceng plants experiencing timber in the NFT system reached 40%. Therefore it is necessary to do further research how influence duration of nutrition to growth and result of Purwoceng.

Abstract

Rendahnya hasil dan kualitas purwoceng pada penanaman secara konvensional di lahan terbuka dapat diatasi dengan aplikasi teknologi hidroponik di dalam greenhouse. Teknologi hidroponik di dalam greenhouse memungkin pengendalian tanaman secara terkontrol, panen lebih terencana dan mengurangi hama dan penyakit. Hasil penelitian produksi purwoceng secara hidroponik melalui teknik irigasi drip dan NFT secara terpisah sudah dilakukan. Hasil kajian produksi purwoceng dengan teknik hidroponik nutrient film technique (NFT) menunjukkan bahwa purwoceng sensitif terhadap air yang tersirkulasi. Tanaman purwoceng layu pada sistem NFT mencapai 40%. perlu kajian lanjut bagaimana teknik hidroponik irigasi drip, NFT dan di lahan terbuka terhadap pertumbuhan dan perkembangan tanaman purwoceng. Tujuan dari penelitan adalah mendapatkan pengaruh irigasi drip, NFT dan lahan terbuka terhadap pertumbuhan tinggi tanaman dan jumlah cabang tanaman purwoceng di musim kemarau. Percobaan menggunakan Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) dengan 3 kali ulangan. Iklim mikro di dalam dan luar greenhouse yang diamati meliputi suhu udara dan kelembapan udara. Data pertumbuhan dianalisis dengan uji F dan dilanjutkan uji DMRT taraf 5%. Variabel pertumbuhan yang diamati meliputi tinggi tanaman dan jumlah cabang. Produksi purwoceng menggunakan sistem irigasi drip, sistem NFT dan lahan terbuka memberikan pengaruh yang berbeda terhadap pertumbuhan purwoceng. Irigasi drip di dalam greenhouse menghasilkan rata-rata tinggi tanaman dan jumlah cabang tertinggi dibandingkan teknik NFT dan di lahan terbuka. Penanaman purwoceng dengan irigasi drip menunjukkan hasil tertinggi, yaitu 14 buah. Jumlah cabang tanaman purwoceng di lahan terbuka rata-rata mencapai 6,9 buah. Teknik NFT menghasilkan jumlah cabang terendah yaitu 3,9 buah.

Abstract

Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has the potential to be developed as a natural agent for therapy of iron overload in thalassemia. The purpose of this research was to observe the ability of ethanol extract of green tea as a natural iron chelating agent in animal iron overload model. Ethanol extract of green tea leave (GTLE) was prepared by maceration using 70% ethanol. Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into three groups (5 rats each), a normal control group (group I) received daily p.o. of deionized water, the iron overload group received 100 g/Kg BW (group II) of GTLE that given two hours before ferroussulfate0.5 g/Kg BW administrations and the last group (group III) received only 0.5 g/Kg BW of ferrous sulfate. GTLE and ferrous sulfate were given orally every day for 30 days. At the end of the experimental period, rat blood serum samples were collected. Iron content and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels were measured using a spectrophotometer followed by observing the histologic preparation of rat liver organ. The results showed that administration of green tea leaves ethanolic extract of 100 g/Kg BW was able to keep down iron and ALT levels in the rat blood to a normal level.

Abstract

Black cumin (Nigella sativa) is known to have anticancer activity. Previous study showed that chloroform extract of N. sativa, have cytotoxic activity on T47D cell line. The purpose of this study was to determine the antiproliferation activity of chloroform extract N. sativa in female rats induced-DMBA based on histopathologic changes on renal cell of cell proliferation and to observe the optimal concentration of N. sativa as antiproliferative agent. Sprague Dawley strain female rats were divided into live groups. Group 1 was given DMBA 20 mg/kg BW. Group 2, 3, 4, were given DMBA and chloroform extracts of N. sativa with 250; 500; 750 mg kg BW rank dose. Group 5 was given corn oil. Renal cell histopathology was observed by H&E and AgNOR staining. The inhibition of renal cell proliferation was observed with mAgNOR value. mAgNOR data were analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, ANOVA and Tukey HSD. The results of H&E and AgNOR staining showed that at a dose of 7 SOmg/kg BW chloroform extract of N. sativa reduced cell damage and inhibit renal cells proliferation with mAgNOR value of 1.069. This result suggest that the chloroform extract of N. sativa had the potential effect as chemopreventive agent.

Abstract

Background: Psidium guajava is one of the herbal plants that has demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of P. guajava leaves extract on leukocytes and lymphocytes in rats. Methods: Fifty rats were divided into five groups. Complete Freund’s Adjuvant (CFA) was employed to generate an animal model of arthritis. Group I (arthritis control) received CMC Na, group II (positive control) received dexamethasone 3 mg/kg BW, and groups III-V received 250, 500, and 750 mg/kg BW of the ethanol extract of P. guajava leaves orally. Total leukocyte counts were calculated on days 13 and 29, and on day 29, the histological joints were inspected. Results: The P. guajava leaves extract decreased the number of lymphocytes and total leukocytes. Before and after treatment, the group receiving doses of 250 mg/kg BW and 750 mg/kg BW of the extract showed a significant decrease in leukocytes. With treatment of 250, 500, and 750 mg/kg BW of P. guajava leaves ethanol extract, the lymphocyte count was also reduced. The P. guajava leaves extract at 750 mg/kg body weight showed the greatest effectiveness in suppressing leukocytes and lymphocytes. Conclusion: The extract of P. guajava leaves has the potential to be developed as an anti-inflammatory for arthritis.

Abstract

Penggunaan antibiotik yang tidak tepat terjadi karena minimalnya informasi dari tenaga kesehatan. Permasalahan tersebut dapat mendorong terjadinya resistensi bakteri terhadap antibiotik pada manusia. Kesadaran dan pengetahuan masyarakat di Desa Sambeng Wetan mengenai penggunaan antibiotik yang rasional masih kurang. Pemberdayaan masyarakat terutama terhadap kader kesehatan perlu dilakukan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan tentang penggunaan antibiotik. Metode edukasi yang dilaksanakan yaitu dengan metode modul, ceramah dan diskusi. Instrumen penelitian berupa kuesioner yang dibagikan kepada responden sebelum dan sesudah edukasi untuk mengevaluasi tingkat pengetahuan peserta. Kuesioner berisi pertanyaan tertutup terkait pengetahuan penggunaan antibiotik. Data dianalisis dengan uji t berpasangan. Berdasarkan karakteristik peserta, sebagian besar peserta adalah usia dewasa awal (83,87%). Pendidikan responden sebagian besar adalah tamat SMA (38,71%) dan berprofesi sebagai ibu rumah tangga (90,32%). Hasil menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata nilai pengetahuan kader meningkat 0,97 poin setelah dilakukan edukasi. Persentase peningkatan nilai pengetahuan kader sebesar 13,8% dari rata-rata nilai pengetahuan awal. Edukasi berpengaruh signifikan terhadap tingkat pengetahuan. Kegiatan edukasi dengan metode modul, ceramah dan diskusi mampu meningkatkan pengetahuan dari kader kesehatan. Oleh karena itu perlu dilakukan pemberdayaan masyarakat terutama kader kesehatan secara berkelanjutan sebagai salah satu langkah kongkrit untuk meningkatkan kualitas hidup masyarakat dan mengendalikan resistensi bakteri terhadap antibiotik.

Abstract

Background: Coconut neera is susceptible to fungus contamination. Some plants, such as Calophyllum soulattri, can function as natural preservatives with antifungal properties. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the antifungal activity of C. soulattri leaf extract as measured by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum killing concentration (MKC). Methods: A dilution method was used to isolate the fungus that contaminated coconut neera. MIC and MKC antifungal activity were then evaluated using the liquid dilution method. Results: The results indicated that the contaminant fungi found in coconut neera belonged to the genus Penicillium. The MIC was 12.5%, while the MKC was 18.75%. Conclusion: C. soulattri leaf extract has the potential to be developed as an antifungals for food preservation.
