Abstract

Abstract

Communication is a complex linguistics phenomenon. People use various types of utterances to deliver the intended meaning. This article explains the application of Gricean conversational implicature in the daily exchange of The Verneuil. Besides, this study employs the descriptive-qualitative method. As language usage coheres with context, accordingly, this needs to describe the language phenomenon performed by the interactants along with the speech events in which The Verneuil’s dialogue takes place. Thus, utterances are the type of data analyzed. In particular, the article only scopes the circumcision and family lunch scene where they are conflicting with each other because of their different beliefs. Despite the presence of cultural boundaries, the interactants adhere to Grice’s maxims in casual communication. However, maxims’ infringements happen when they get the cultural inferences involved. Those are triggered by the 5 different cultures which affect their linguistics competencies. Hence, they fail to fulfill the maxim.

Abstract

Kata kunci: pronomina persona, Bahasa Bali, gender, sosiolinguistik, masyarakat tutur   ABSTRACT  Communicative competencies are influenced by the speaker’s linguistic experience in his/her social life. Therefore, a community speech, as a larger scope, can build the speaker’s communicative ability. This study aims to identify social factors related to Balinese speakers' use of first-person pronouns. Furthermore, this research found 13 data from the short film Budaya Nyatuang Tresna using a qualitative descriptive method to present justification for the use of pronouns used by speakers. Considering that social factors also affect the speakers' language skills, the findings are thus classified by the speaker’s gender. Eventually, pronouns in the form of ‘partial name' are categorized as feminine, and “rage” or ‘I’ is commonly used by men, even women in certain circumstances. However, the pronoun “tiang” or ‘I’ can be used by anyone, regardless of the male or female gender. However, its use refers to formal language and the speaker's honorific impression of his/her counterpart. Keywords : personal pronoun, Balinese language,  gender, sociolinguistics, community speech

Abstract

Intercultural communication (ICC) is a dynamic communicative phenomenon due to the cultural value presented in the multicultural communication exchange. The present study aims to explore the intercultural communication between Black and Chinese speakers in the trilogy of Rush Hour. Specifically, this study aims to see the characteristics of Black English and the communicative effects of conversation among speakers of different cultural backgrounds. Through the methods of qualitative descriptive, linguistic behavior is justified to show whether the conventions are acceptable to each community group. The results show that as an American English-speaking, Carter, a Black American is more expressive in using English because he is a native speaker, while Lee, as an L2 English from China, faces more communicative barriers. The cultural value of non-standard forms also adorns such conversation, e.g., phonological and sentence structures stigmatization. Not to mention, Chinese surnames produce homonyms with English pronouns.
