Indonesia might be considered estate crops country. Vanilla is one of estate cropscommodity that has significant share of Indonesian foreign exchange revenue. This spicycommodity is one of Indonesian important traditional export commodities in internationalmarkets. As one of prospective export commodity Indonesia should give more attention tothe development this commodity. The data shows recently, however, the trend of decliningthe export demand in the international market, both in volume and value. If it is comparedto other Asian countries, moreover, the decline is shown very significant. In Minahasadistrict in particular, the decline is caused by, among others, traditional crop managementsystem and technology, need high capital if it is cultivate intensively and integrated, andlack of labour knowledge on how to do the best practice in cultivating vanilla. Moreimportantly, price uncertainty and market uncertainty, where up to present price isdetermined mostly by traders, give disincentive and discourage vanilla farmers to improvetheir cultivation practice.

Abstract

It has been admitted that plantation sub-sector as an important one comparedwith the others in agricultural sector. Pepper is one of the plantation commodities thattraditionally contributes to the Indonesia’s foreign exchange. This commodity is alsothe oldest and native species of Indonesian spices, which has been marketed in theworld wide. But, in the current situation, which is the still adversely affected by globaleconomic crises, the pepper export has been decreased, even how days, the pepperproduction is lower then Vietnams. This decreased production of pepper, especiallyfor example in Bangka district, is caused by inefficiently traditional management, withhigh cost, lack of labors, and uncertainly of pepper price, which is still controlled bymiddle-man. In order to improve the sub-sector plantation, especially the pepperplantation, it is needed to revitalize the extension program and further provide thecredit scheme for farmers.

Abstract

The fact that a close relationship exist between farmlands and agricultural activitiesbrought about consequence that effort for improving farmers welfare cannot bebased only on technological and institutional improvement. The problem to be facedat present a however, that farmlands tend to be increasingly limited, due tocompetition with other uses of lands, where as people working in the sector ofagriculture is steadily, and absolutely increasing, resulting in an increasingly limitedaverage proprietorship and control of land. These reviews discuss the structure of jobopportunities and income, and their interrelations, as well as the causal relationbetween income expenditure levels of the society, in agricultural and non-agriculturalsector. Productivity of labor as a production factor is considered for more important infarm role obtaining the income, than labor absorption itself. Agro-ecosystem anecological disparities should be identified from variables of job opportunities, income, and society expenditure. Economic development induces changes of sectoraleconomic structure, such from agricultural sector to industrial sector, but isn’taccompanied by labor structural shift. There should be employment also for othersectors, not only for agricultural sectors.
