Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find the depression symptoms of Virginia Woolf as the author portrayed in the characters Septimus Warren Smith and Clarissa Dalloway in Mrs Dalloway novel. It could be seen from the analysis of the data from biographical information of Virginia Woolf, narrations and utterances of the major characters Septimus and Clarissa. In order to determine the depression symptoms, Beck’s cognitive theory of depression was used in this research. This research belonged to qualitative method. The data sources were Mrs Dalloway novel and the biographies of Virginia Woolf. The data were the biographical information of Virginia Woolf, narrations and utterances in the novel refers to Woolf’s depression symptoms portrayed in the characters Septimus and Clarissa. The finding showed the depression symptoms of Virginia Woolf as were portrayed in Septimus such as negative expectation, self blame and self criticism, paralysis of the will, avoidance, escapist, and withdrawal wishes, suicidal wishes, loss of appetite, sleep disturbance, loss of libido, and hallucination.Meanwhile, the depression symptoms that were portrayed in Clarissa such as dejected mood, negative feeling toward self, low self evaluation, delusion of worthlessness, and suicidal wishes.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Language is a primary need in society and makes it really could not apart from every people and has become a part of our life. The study that is having a relationship between language and society is sociolinguistics. Sociolinguistics is a branch of linguistics that focuses on the study of language in society. Sociolinguistics covers many topics such as language and gender. Gender can be seen with how men and women play a role and act in society depends on their social and cultural provision and how they are raised to use language will affect how they behave. Gender language appears in many literary works, and one of them is Hidden Figures film. Hidden Figures film contains men and women’s language features and there are also the evidences that gender language exists in that film. This research focused on analyzing the features of gender language and the characteristics in gender language through descriptive qualitative research. The result of this research showed that there were eight women’s language features found and six men’s language features found by the researcher in Hidden Figures film. The researcher found women’s language features in Katherine’s utterance, those features are lexical hedges, tag question, rising intonation on declaratives, empty adjectives, intensifiers, superpolite forms, avoidance of strong swear words and emphatic stress. Then for men’s language features, it is found that there were six men’s language features in Al Harrison’s utterance, those features are minimal responses, hedges, question, command and directives, swearing and taboo language and compliments. In addition, the researcher also performed best characterizing in gender language in Hidden Figures film based on how many features appeared in two characters.Keywords: language and gender, men’s language, women’s language ABSTRAK Bahasa merupakan kebutuhan primer dalam masyarakat dan benar-benar tidak bisa lepas dari setiap orang karena telah menjadi bagian dari kehidupan kita. Kajian yang ada hubungannya antara bahasa dan masyarakat adalah sosiolinguistik. Sosiolinguistik adalah salah satu cabang ilmu linguistik yang berfokus pada kajian bahasa dalam masyarakat. Sosiolinguistik mencakup banyak topik seperti bahasa dan gender. Gender dapat dilihat dari bagaimana laki-laki dan perempuan berperan dan bertindak dalam masyarakat sesuai dengan ketetapan sosial dan budaya mereka, dan bagaimana mereka dibesarkan untuk berbahasa akan mempengaruhi bagaimana mereka  berperilaku. Bahasa gender muncul dalam banyak karya sastra, salah satunya adalah film Hidden Figures. Film Hidden Figures memuat fitur-fitur bahasa laki-laki dan perempuan dan juga terdapat bukti bahwa bahasa gender ada dalam film tersebut. Penelitian ini fokus pada analisis fitur bahasa gender dan karakteristik bahasa gender melalui penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat delapan fitur bahasa wanita dan enam fitur bahasa laki-laki yang ditemukan oleh peneliti dalam film Hidden Figures. Peneliti menemukan fitur bahasa wanita dalam ucapan Katherine, fitur-fitur tersebut adalah hedge (terkungkung / terbatasi), menggunakan tag question, menaikkan intonasi dalam pernyataan, menggunakan empty adjectives, menggunakan intensifiers, menggunakan ragam bahasa yang (sangat) sopan, menghindari kata-kata makian, menggunakan penekanan empatik. Kemudian untuk fitur-fitur bahasa laki-laki, ditemukan enam fitur bahasa laki-laki dalam ucapan Al Harrison, fitur-fitur tersebut adalah respon minimal, hedge (terkungkung/ terbatasi), pertanyaan, perintah dan arahan, bahasa makian dan tabu dan pujian. Sebagai tambahan, peneliti juga menampilkan karakterisasi mana yang paling cocok dalam bahasa gender difilm bahasa gender berdasarkan banyaknya fitur yang muncul pada dua karakterKata kunci: Bahasa dan Gender, Bahasa Perempuan, Bahasa Laki-laki.

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to find the character development of Isabella Linton and what are the events that influence Isabella Linton’s character development. This research applied an objectives approach and the researcher used Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights novel as the source of data. The data were taken from the dialogues between characters and narrations that indicate Isabella Linton’s character development based on Kenan’s theory and the events that influence Isabella Linton’s character development based on Griffith’s theory. The finding of this research using Kenan’s theory showed that Isabella Linton experienced character development from a spoiled and innocent young lady became a brave, responsible, and independent woman. Then, the finding using Griffith’s theory of plot showed that Isabella Linton experiences character development at the exposition events, rising action, climax, falling action, and stable situation.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to describe the categories of defense mechanism used by Tyrion Lannister. Sigmund Freud’s theory of defense mechanism and personality theory is used by the researcher to answer the research question. This research uses qualitative descriptive method. The data of this research are scenes and dialogues of Tyron Banister including dialogues and scenes from other characters that contain the defense mechanism used by Tyron. The data analysis was conducted through observation, collecting, identifying, and classifying data to find the necessary data for the research. The findings of the research are as follows: in the Third and Fourth season of Game of Thrones film series created by David Benioff and D.B Weiss, all twelve defense mechanisms are found. Those are; Ten data of denial, thirty data of rationalization, two data of projection, four data of sublimation, eight data of reaction formation, two data of displacement, three data of regression, three data of undoing, six data of identification, five data of compensation, eighteen data of humor, and three data of repression. The cases of defense mechanisms used by Tyron gained through character and characterization. Character and characterization are necessary to understand certain situations in the story, it helps the researcher to determine the cause of the events and how the character reacts to it via indirect characterization or actions. Furthermore, character and characterization define what kind of defense mechanisms that are used by the character to work through his problems such as being despised, mocked, and humiliated.

Abstract

This research focuses on motivation in Marriage Proposal script by Anton Chekov which was published in 1888. The script tells about a rich woman named Stepanovna who was proposed by a rich man named Lomov. However, the proposal did not go smoothly because Stepanovna was long-winded about it. Therefore, this study aims to determine the motivation of Stepanovna, by describing Reaske’s motivation theory to reveal the type of motivation in Stepanovna. Then, the theory used in analyzing Stepanovna’s character, the researcher used Boggs and Petri characterization theory. Furthermore, the researcher used qualitative research as the method and mimesis as the approach in this research. The data collected comes from the dialogue of Stepanovna and the narration of Marriage Proposal script. The results showed that there were four types of seven types of motivation they are fear of failure, love, hope for reward, and jealousy. In four types of motivation, the researcher got four characters of Stepanovna, they are an arrogant, determined, aggressive and sincere person. It can be concluded that the characters of Stepanovna were influenced by her motivations, it means that these characters depending the situation faced by Stepanovna and made Stepanovna behave towards Lomov then it is the reason of her motivation existed
