Abstract

The  success  of  taungya  depends   on several  factors,   i.e.  site  quality,  social and economic   condition   of peasants.  This report  was made  as the  result  of  taungya  survey  in Bojonegoro   Forest  District,  East  Java. The influence  of several factors were  estimated    by  the  multiple   regression  equation. The  effect  of  site  quality   variable  is  significant,   and  the  effects  of  technology   and family  man power  variables are highly  significant,   but  the  levels  of  education,    labor  cost,  and peasant  location  do  not  significantly   influence  peasants' income   from   taungya.  The growth   of  basal trees area is influenced   by technology   and production   facility  cost  variables in highly  significant level.  This  occurence  showed   that  applying    "Inmas"  policy  on taungya  could  increased peasants  income,  and give positive effect   on  basal trees growth.   As  the site  quality  played  highly  significant   role on taungya  success,  it is necessary  to applydifferent   policy   to  each  location   with  different   site  quality.

Abstract

Development of  plywood  industries  should not  be rated from  the  increase of ply mill  number  and  the production aspects alone, but  there is other  indicators  that need be taken  into consideration  such as productivity  and efficiency factors. High productivity and  efficiency   would  bring more profit to  the  company and save the existing  national  resources. In  this report  some  results  of productivity  analysis  is presented based on ratio of actual production   over break even point (BEP) production    level, and efficiency  analysis  is presented   based  on  ration  of actual production  over production capacity  level,   ratio of  output value  over input  value, and added  value of  logs processed  into  plywood  criteria.Based  on  criteria  as  mentioned   above  it  can  be  concluded   that  all six  visited  plymills on  the average have fairly high productivity and efficiency, but utilization rate of existing production capacity is still low.  The average ratio of actual production over BEP production is 2.48  with  range 1.35 3.28  (coefficient   of variation 29 %),  the average ratio of actual production   over production   capacity  is 0.64  with  range 0.25 0.91 (coefficient   of  variation  50  %),  the average ratio of output value over input  value is 1.27 with  range 1.071.38  (coefficient   of  variation  10 %),  while  the average of added value of  logs to plywood  is 70 % with  range 17 % -112  % (coefficient   of  variation  21  %).

Abstract

Plywood production can be increased by improving factory quality, work organization system, processing method, and by increasing the skill of the operators and other activities supporting labour productivity.Previous works indicated that low productivity of labour in plywood mill in Indonesia was mainly due to the low levels of education, skill and experiences of operators. This study is intended to obtain accurate data concerning this problem. The survey was conducted in several plywood industries in Sumatera in 1985 and revealed the following results:Average actual production of plywood mills is lower than the design production capacity.  The average ratio of actual production capacity is as low as 0.422.The productivity of employees varies between mills, especially for Managers. Managers productivity ranges from 45.2 to 242 cum/man/month (standard error 93.5 cum/man/month); administrative staff productivity 14.1-38.2 cum/man/month (standard error 9,6 cum/man/month);and operators:1.7-5.9 cum/man/month  (standard error 1.5 cum/man/month).Waging system in term of payment (monthly or others) and the amount of salary does not effect the productivity levels.

Abstract

An analysis of man power has been conducted in several plywood  mills in Sumatera  and Kalimantan in year 1987, and the result presented  in this paper.  The result shows  that  the average employment  is 993 men per mill.Based  on  mill  capasity  and  log input,  the average level  of  labour  absorption  is 11.33 men/1000 cum  designed  capasity, and 10.66 men/1000  cum  log input.  The  latter  figure is  more or less similar to  that  of  the developed  country  in which  the  average  level  of  labour absorption  is.11.33 men/1000  cum.  However  labour  absorption in each  mill  it is not proportional to both capasity  and  material  utilization  (logs). Organization  structure  of mills surveyed  have a long span of control  so it is recommended to be simplified.

Abstract

The  scarcity  of  agriculture  land and  the  increasing population around  the  forest  have aucsed pressure on  the forest resource.   Taungya  system  approach   is aimed  at  improving   the prosperity   of  the people  surrounding   the  forest  through tree planting  coupled   with  crops in  two  years period. The result of observation on Taungya system in Pasar Sore Forest District  Administrations, Cepu,  Central Java, revealed  that  the  present  income  from taungya  system   contributed   about  22  % of  total  income.  Other  interesting   result showed   that  soil fertilization   by peasant,   beside gives positive   effect on peasant  income,   it also causes positive  impact  on the  growth   of  trees  basal areas.  Some   variables analyzed   in  this study  are  taungya  income   (Y1),  the  cost of  production facility  such  as fertilizer  and  insectiside  cost  (X1) man power   (X2), non-taungya income   (X3),  and  basal growth   (Y2). The  relationship   resulted  in regression  models  as follows  : Y1  =   -32,23 + 14,04X1  +   0,23X2  -  0,04X3  (R2 = 0,83) Y2  =   2.009,45 + 326,09  X1 + 2,98  X2  - 1,29  X3  (R2 = 0,78)

Abstract

A research in production cost and its distribution was conducted in several plywood manufacturers in South Sumatra and South Kalimantan. The  average, distribution and  variation  of production cost  are discussed in this report. The  results  showed  that  average cost  of  production  was  Rp  313,066  per cu.m.  with  coefficient of  variation  9% consisting of  average  fixed cost  Rp 59,135 per cu.m.  with  coefficient of  variation  19%  and  average  variable  cost Rp 253,931 per cu.m.  with  coefficient   of  variation  12%. Average profit   before  taxes  was Rp 78,827 per  cu.m.  or 26% of production cost  with  coefficient  of  variation  48%.  Due to the fact  that  the largers component   of  the cost  was used for material  expense (56%) so  it is advised  the manufacturers  should  give more care the material processing  aspect  so that  the waste  could  be reduced  as small as possible.

Abstract

Taungya farming system  has given peasants an opportunity to produce some food  without  getting  involved in forest planting  activities. It is not only  cheap, but also very  attractive to peoples around the  forest. This report was a result of data processing of  peasant's income  in  taungya   farming  system in Bojonegoro Forest District, East Java,   early in 1986.The total peasant's income consists of taungya farming income, other forest  activities  income,  and  income  of  non forest   activities.  Generaly,  the share of each  type  of income    to the average total  peasant's income per year is concecutively 36.8 % (Rp 57,381) of  taungya  farming income;  26.9 % (Rp 41,976) of  other  forest  activities  income  and  36.3.   % (Rp 56,473)  of  non  forest  activities  income. The proportion of  taungya  income to  total  income  of  lnmas peasants (55.8%) is higher  than  Non-Inmas  peasants (21.8%); whereas  peasants working on a low site  quality    have proportion of taungya income to total income, 12.3%, which is lower than those  working  on a  site  with  higher  quality (50.1%).In fact, peasant's income that resultfrom forest activities, especially taungya   farming  still  could  not  cope  withtheir  poverty.   Average   total  income   of  peasants is  Rp  50,814 per capita  in  a year or only 77 % of  the minimum living standard  cost  only.   Nevertheless,  the  average   total  income   of  peasants  had good  distribution,   as far as it is concerned  this would  not  cause an alarming  trouble   to  the  social   community.
