Abstract

The lack of intercultural communication skills will likely cause disharmony, misunderstanding, and even conflict in communication. To be successful in communication with native speakers depends on language skills, customs, and cultural knowledge. In the age of global communication, English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching goals should be reoriented to cultivate intercultural communication competence (ICC). EFL learners should have this intercultural competence and be sensitive in order to avoid disharmony, misunderstandings, and even conflicts in communication. The main objective of this preliminary study is to reveal the levels of intercultural communicative competence among EFL students at a state university in Indonesia. A survey questionnaire was performed employing a quantitative analysis in this study. Eighty-nine students filled out the ICC questionnaire, which consisted of 20 questions. Findings indicated that most of the students had a low ICC level because they are lack of experience and knowledge in interacting and socializing with people from various cultural backgrounds. In terms of gender differences, the results showed that male students had higher levels of ICC than that female students. This research implied that intercultural topics should be included in the university’s curriculum.

Abstract

The understanding of the variety of culture that exists in the world is crucial since the meeting of people from one country to the other countries is inevitable nowadays with the improvement of knowledge and technology. Therefore since young age, a child is suggested to be given knowledge about the different culture including manners, ethics, taboos, norms that exist  in  the world. The cultural understanding promotes tolerance, ability to work with other people, good entrepreneurship skills and most of all, peace. The teaching of the values of tolerance should be started since a student is in an elementary level. The concept of ‘seni budaya’ classes should be changed into classes with more emphasis on the cross cultural understanding, rather than merely doing some art projects.   Keywords: improvement of knowledge and technology,  cultural understanding, tolerance

Abstract

Dulu kita hanya mendengar ada dua jenis sekolah yaitu sekolah negeri dan sekolah   swasta. Menilik perkembangan sekolah-sekolah pada zaman ini, kita kerap mendengar jenis-jenis  sekolah lain yang bermunculan, seperti sekolah nasional plus, selain sekolah berstandar internasional yang sedang giat-giatnya dikembangkan oleh pemerintah Indonesia. Perlu sangat diperhatikan, perkembangan pendidikan modern haruslah ditunjang oleh pendidik yang mampu menjawab kebutuhan pendidikan masa kini.   Kata Kunci: perkembangan, sekolah berstandar internasional, pendidik, kebutuhan

Abstract

The novel entitled Ayat-Ayat Cinta written by Habiburrahman El Shirazy is considered phenomenal because it brings forward the religious theme. The novel describes the life of women with Islam values as its foundation. This has impressed the society since they feel bored with the radical feminism themes bringing too much emphasis on the freedom of sex and lusts that appear in the literature so often. This analysis is aimed at describing the images of women in the novel. To analyze the images of women, the theory of psychology of literature is applied. The finding of this research shows that the images of women in the novel are beautiful, motherly, independent, heroic, wise, smart, loving, revengeful, slanderous and impatient to face problems. AAC is considered as the religious novel that conveys Islam point of view about women both implicitly and explicitly. This is shown from the activities of the women in carrying out the Islam values which are based on the verses of Al Qur’an and Hadits. The characters in AAC show the attitude of being patient and being submissive to God, putting effort to get something, praying to God, keeping the dignity of one’s husband, putting effort to gain knowledge, doing sunnah. Abstract

Lambe turah as the most popular anonymous accounts on social media in Instagram, discusses celebrity life and viral events, demanded avoid misinterpretation or any lawsuits to prevent of losing their face. To avoid it, Lambe Turah used euphemism. Through semantic approach, this study attempts at analyzing the types of euphemism in Lambe Turah Instagram captions. The study was conducted using a descriptive qualitative method and the data used were the written words that appeared in Lambe Turah Instagram captions. The result of this study shown that the most frequently types of euphemism were found was clipping. In conclusion, euphemism not only continually renames items and repackages them to "better" the sound, but also deals with the customs of language that the main function is to avoid someone losing their face. In over all, the use of euphemism in public especially in social media is increasingly demanded avoid misinterpretation or any lawsuits to prevent face loss, and also helpful to hide the harmful truth.
