Abstract

This study discusses the dynamics of Indonesian student movement in the New Order era between 1966 until 1998. It also analyses the responses of the authority to their movement and its impact. This research uses the qualitative method of literature review and interviews where the arguments are presented in descriptive analysis. Based on Antonio Gramsci’s concept of hegemony, this study has uncovered the hegemonic means utilized by the authority to undermine student movement. The description of how this social formation was defragmented, justified and then integrated into bureaucratic processes where their existence was then consented as a subordinated class. In reality, the student movement under the New Order government was closely related to the situation of socio-politics and character of the regime. Nevertheless, the Asian economic crisis jolted the revival of the student movement to its initial vibrant state which brought down Suharto’s regime in 1998. This study has proven that hegemonic process also has a shelf-life as the masses will eventually see through the regime’s political construction. This eventuality was due to external and internal factors such as development of information technology, the rise of cyber-power, international politics and the emergence of new ideas.

Abstract

Malaysia is a multiethnic country, in which ethnic factors as the basis of political interests. So far, efforts to create national integration have been directed at strengthening relations between ethnic groups and creating a political balance for all peoples. Efforts to build a nation state are conducted through policy: political cooperation, economic affirmation for ethnic Malays, education, and strengthening the position of Malay as the national language. The challenge to the nation state development in Malaysia emerged during the economic crisis of 1998. The conflict brought political divisions among Malaysians, especially Malays. After Mahathir Mohamad's reign, efforts to promote national unity were carried out by introducing a moderate and tolerant concept of Islam Hadhari. During the leadership of Najib Razak, efforts to build a nation state were undertaken under the idea of One Malaysia. One of the challenges of developing a nation today is: The widening of gaps, racial prejudices, increased group identity, intolerance and corruption.

Abstract

This study discusses ethical theory. The method used is descriptive analysis with a qualitative approach. Ethics affirms the principles of behavior that must be carried out by individuals to adjust to the good they receive. We know several ethical theories, namely: First, sosial morality theory. This theory states that society is the most authorized in describing sosial truth. Something that is considered good or bad, appropriate or inappropriate, moral or immoral if it is in harmony with values, norms, and law in society. Second, personality virtue theory. This theory argues that efforts to develop morals must lead to the formation of noble and best character. Problems that are more emphasized are individual or human dimensions, and not actions. Third, teleological theory. This theory states that good or bad actions depends on the goals achieved. An action that means good, but does not produce anything meaningful, according to this theory is not called good. The theory emphasizes the impact of the actions. Teleological theory divided into two school of thought, namely; utilitarianism and egoism. Fourth, deontology theory. This theory confirms that good or bad behavior is not assessed based on its impact, but because of obligation. The behavior is never good because the results are good, but only because they are needed. So determining value is a good, right, and moral are from characteristic actions.
