Abstract

Language Teaching Media is one of the obligatory courses for the fifth semester students in the English Language Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University. It provides the students with theories on language teaching media and opportunities to create innovative teaching media. This study aims to develop a learning model for Language Teaching Media course. Therefore, this study uses Research and Development method proposed by Borg & Gall’s. There are ten steps in the Research and Development method, namely: (1) Research and Information Collecting, (2) Planning, (3) Developing Preliminary Form of Product, (4) Preliminary Field Testing, (5) Main Product Revision, (6) Main Field Testing, (7) Operational Product Revision, (8) Operational Field Testing, (9) Final Product Revision and (10) Dissemination and Implementation. Since the aim of this study is to develop the learning model for Language Teaching Media Course, only three out of ten steps of the R&D model were employed, namely: Research and Information Collecting, Planning, and Developing Preliminary Form of Product. The developed learning model would be useful to enable the students to develop and utilize media to facilitate language teaching using their creativity and innovation.DOI: doi.org/10.24071/llt.2018.210104

Abstract

Possessing native-like pronunciation is one of the main goals that non-native speakers of English would like to accomplish. Besides the ability to pronounce English sounds correctly, using the proper English word stress also plays an important role in achieving that goal. This paper first specifies the nature of word stress in English and its contribution on successful English language learning. Secondly, it addresses the problems that are commonly encountered by the Indonesian learners in using correct word stress in their speech. Finally, it also proposes some ways that English learners can use to learn English word stress better. Hopefully these proposed ways will be able to help the learners to speak in English more fluently with not only accurate pronunciation but also with correct word stress.

Abstract

EFL students’ speaking skill at the university level is normally assessed through presentations in the teaching and learning activities. Therefore, the ability to deliver effective presentations is needed as it affects the EFL students’ competence in speaking. Most EFL students choose to use Microsoft PowerPoint to deliver their presentations in class. However, the additional pressure given to present in English normally causes them to include as much information as possible on their slides. They have the tendency to focus too much on the content and neglect the delivery aspect. As a result, most of the students only end up reading aloud their text-heavy slides, which often leads to boredom. Pecha Kucha is then introduced as a creative and innovative presentation format to improve EFL students’ speaking skill in delivering presentations. It is a simple, concise and effective presentation format which allows only twenty (20) slides that will advance automatically for 20 seconds each. The results of the study show that the use of Pecha Kucha has increased the EFL students’ speaking skill in delivering presentations. It is shown from the increased mean scores of the students’ presentation scores from before and after Pecha Kucha is used. It is also strengthened by the results of the interview on two students stating that Pecha Kucha has improved their speaking skill in delivering effective presentations in terms of the language use, speech delivery and interaction with audience. DOI: doi.org/10.24071/llt.2019.220109

Abstract

Most of the staff of Bank Mandiri in Yogyakarta have some difficulties to communicate with the foreign customers, which hinder the process of the service. Therefore, this study attempted to develop English speaking materials for the staff of Bank Mandiri in Yogyakarta using the principles of task-based learning. The writer adapted Kemp’s instructional design model (1977) comprising eight flexible, interdependent steps. Those steps, subsequently, were put under the umbrella of Borg & Gall’s (1986) Research and Development (R&D) method. Due to time and resource limitations, only three out of ten steps of the R&D model were employed, which were: (1) Research and information collecting, (2) Planning and (3) Developing preliminary form of product. To acquire required information for developing the materials, the writer distributed needs analysis questionnaire to twenty staff of Bank Mandiri, Yogyakarta. The designed materials covered eight units. Each unit consisted of five sections, namely “Do You Remember?”, “Prepare Yourself!”, “Can You Do These?”, “Let’s Learn!”, and “It’s Time to Write”. It was expected that the materials could improve the speaking skill of the staff of Bank Mandiri Yogyakarta.DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/llt.2017.200108
