Abstract

The concept of parenting cannot be separated from the context of the local culture. This study aimed to develop an instrument of parenting for Javanese families. The study was conducted using design of exploratory sequential mix method. The first step was exploration of the construct of Javanese parenting, and the second was the examination of measurement model. The exploration step was conducted using focused group discussion (FGD) involving 50 Javanese mothers and an interview involving 19 Javanese parents who live in Yogyakarta. The result of exploration step showed that the concept of Javanese parenting is built upon seven values, that are; value of respect to elder (hormat), harmony (rukun), self-control (kendali perilaku), acceptance (‘nrimo’/sikap menerima), self-discipline (disiplin), honesty (jujur), and love (tresno). Then the construct was generalized into items that can be understood by children. The measurement model examination step involved 334 fifth grade students in first trial and 175 fifth grade students on the second trial. The result of the measurement model examination showed that the Javanese parenting costruct is valid (RMESA=0.063; SRMR=0.068) and reliable (Cronbach’s alpha = 0,925). The result indicate the relevance of local cultural values in development of parenting instrument.

Abstract

The use of a dimensional approach in assessment tools of parenting style in Indonesia is still very limited. Parent as Social Context Questionnaire (PSCQ)-Adolescent Report is widely known as a dimensional-parenting style assessment tool. This study examined the factor structure and reliability of the Indonesian version of the PSCQ-Adolescent Report. This 24-item questionnaire measures six parenting dimensions: warmth, structure, autonomy support, rejection, chaos, and coercion, with four items in each dimension. Participants were 1476 Junior High School Students aged 11-16 years old (48% male, 52% female), recruited from six main islands in Indonesia. Our findings confirmed the original six unipolar factor structures of the Indonesian PSCQ. Of the six factors, five factors with the exception of coercion had acceptable to good reliability. The finding that coercion had no negative correlation with the positive dimensions such as warmth and autonomy support differs from findings in the West, indicating that coercion is considered negative in Western culture but is not the case in Indonesia. This study concluded that PSCQ-Adolescent Report can be used as a valid and reliable measure of the parenting style of Indonesian adolescents.

Abstract

Beliefs and goals in parenting are influenced by the expectations of society or local culture. Therefore, the measurement of parenting should be developed from a contextual perspective. The development of the measurement conducted inductively which started with the phase of indigenous concept exploration. The participants are parents living in a particular area, having a local ethnic identity, using local language and customs in their daily lives. The method of data collection is an interview or focus group discussion (FGD), with questions that refer to the parenting element according to Darling & Steinberg. Two alternative data analysis can be done; to obtain the construct at the level of parenting practice or construct at the level of parenting style. The construct then is developed into an instrument by following the scale development guidelines in which includes item writing, content validation, scale administration, and psychometric evaluation.
